To achieve this goal, data were collected in four departments of southern Benin (Mono, Couffo, Ouémé and Plateau) using an interview guide and a structured questionnaire. A total of 223 producers chosen at random from these areas where the CRSP Horticulture Project is located were surveyed. The results of the study show that growers using insect nets have not given up using chemical pesticides. However, a significant reduction in treatment frequencies was recorded in the nursery and after transplanting for most of the pesticides identified. Similarly, a significant reduction (more than 60.0%) in pest attacks (Helicoverpa armigera, Hellula undalis, Plutella xylostella, Bemisia tabaci and cochineals) was recorded among producers using anti-insect nets at 5%. These results involve that it is necessary to sensitize farmers to the use of nets to protect plants. This will significantly reduce pest attacks and reduce the use of pesticides in production.

It is therefore necessary to improve its efficiency. This study aimed at modelling the perception and economic performance of teak plant production in some rural nurseries. To this end, a survey was conducted among 140 teak nurseries in northern, central and southern regions of Benin using the "snowball" sampling method. In terviews organized with plant nurserymen served to gather data on their demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, plant production techniques, production costs and output, and teak production perception. The perception of producers and the performance of teak plant production were modeled respectively from a logistic regression model and then from a linear regression model. The analysis of the results showed that the age of the nurseryman, unlike variables such as gender and seniority in production, negatively influences the economic performance ...

To remedy these challenges and improve particularly food and nutritional status of populations, a new crop Pachyrhizus ahipa. (Yam Bean) is being introduced in Central and Southern Benin. The present survey aims to assess constraints and opportunities of Pachyrhizus ahipa. introduction in the Central and Southern Benin farming systems. Municipalities were chosen in the agro-ecological zones of this part of Benin on the basis of poverty level, food security and nutritional status of populations. They are Ouèssè, Dassa-zoumè, Djidja and Kétou in the agroecological zone V (biggest zone); Djakotomey in the agro-ecological zone VI; Toffo in the agroecological zone VII and finally Dangbo in the agro-ecological zone VIII. In each of these municipalities, one (01) representative village has been chosen using results of previous works. A Rapid Rural Appraisal on the fa...

Vikrey’s method of second price experimental auction was combined with “Endow-and-upgrade” method to collect data. The results show that the competitiveness of local rice vis-a-vis the most preferred imported rice is low. The most competitive local rice were the nonparboiled IR841, Gambiaca, and Nerica L20. Based on these results, the improved variety “IR841” and the local variety “Gambiaca” are the rice varieties to promote. However, the processing technology and the post-harvest activities need to be improved.

Maize is a staple food and an important source of income for farmers in southern Benin. It is stored at village level in traditional storage structures and treated with conservation products. To improve control pest damage in stored maize, improved wooden granaries and a new product, Sofagrain®, were introduced in 1992. On-farm trials indicated that after six months of storage, the losses were reduced from 30% to only 5% for maize treated with Sofagrain® stored in an improved wooden granary. Although the effectiveness of storage innovations against pests is well documented, little is known about the socioeconomic aspects of promotion of these innovations in southern Benin. Using appropriate econometric models, this study investigates the perce...

This paper was carried out with the aim of identifying the determinants of adoption and improved maize seeds’ intensity use on households in all areas favourable to maize production in Benin using pooled data on 490 producers. Descriptive statistics such as mean, standard deviation, percentage, frequency distribution, t and chi-square tests were used to summarize the characteristics of the sampled producers. Cragg's Double Hurdle model was also used to categorize producers who adopted or who did not adopt improved maize seed and those who intensified the use of improved maize seed. The results showed that literacy, easy access to improved seed, specific training received on the use of improved varieties and gender, affected the adoption of improved maize seed while easy access to improved seed, maize yield, relationship with extension services, total household size, age squared,...

The experimental processes took place in the maize production areas of northern and central Benin. The sample consisted of 365 maize farmers (80.55% male and 19.45% female) randomly selected from 40 villages. Data were collected and analyzed using a latent class logit model to study the heterogeneous preferences of the key attributes of storage structures. The results show that men and women are eager to change their current practices and to adopt new storage technologies. The study identifies four potential producer segments, including three large-farmer segments that have access to credit and are particularly attracted to structures related to metal silos. Of those three segments, two are also attracted to improved traditional silos. Another segment of poor farmers, who do not have access to credit, prefer to have a very efficient structure (loss rate o...

However, these studies largely ignore farmers' adaptations and market adjustments that mitigate predicted negative effects. The paper attempts to fill some of this gap through a spatially explicit evaluation of the impact of climate change on farm income in the Oueme River Basin (ORB), Benin. The ORB is in many respects representative for the middle belt of West Africa where the predominantly sparse occupation leaves potential for migration from more densely populated areas. We apply a number of structural, spatially explicit relationships estimated for the whole territory of Benin to simulate conditions in the ORB proper that are similar to those currently prevailing in the drier North, and the more humid South. Our scenario results factor out for the main crops cultivated the constituent effects on yields, area, and revenue per ton. We find that under average climate change conditions the current low yields are not reduced, provided that cropping patterns are adjusted, while price increases partly compensate for the remaining adverse effects on farmer income. Consequently, without any policy intervention, farm incomes remain relatively stable, albeit at low levels and with increased occurrence of crop failures after extreme droughts. Scenario simulations show that there are also beneficial aspects that can, with adequate interventions, even turn losses into gains. Main channel for improvement would be the reduction
