La teoria del “ Homo ludens” de Johan Huizinga, permitio ver el juego como esa herramienta capaz de ayudar a conectar con los demas y aprender en forma relajada y significativa. En su articulo, Paula Chacon (2008) inicia definiendo el termino juego segun Sanuy y segun Montessori. Segun el primero, la palabra juego, viene de la raiz indo-europea “ghem” que significa saltar de alegria. Para Montessori,el juego se define como una actividad ludica organizada para alcanzar fines especificos. Historicamente, los cursos de Circuitos Electricos I y II se han caracterizado por ser complejos para los estudiantes. Brain–computer interfaces (BCIs) facilitate communication between the brain and external devices,... more Brain–computer interfaces (BCIs) facilitate communication between the brain and external devices, providing an alternative solution for individuals with upper limb disabilities. The decoding of brain movement commands in BCIs relies on signal feature extraction and classification. Herein, the BNCI Horizon 2020 dataset is employed, which consists of electroencephalographic signals from ten participants with subacute and chronic cervical spinal cord injuries. These participants perform or attempt five distinct types of arm and hand movements. To extract signal features, a novel technique is introduced that estimates movement‐related cortical potentials and incorporates them into the processing pipeline. Moreover, a time‐frequency domain representation of the dataset is used as input for the classifier. The work was performed by a multidisciplinary group in two Colombian regions. During year 2012, professors noted that senior students had problems in both oral and written communication. Therefore, engineering professors decided to join expert faculty in communication skills and to design a long-term project to help students. The project was meant to improve these skills, and it included four phases. Phase one diagnosed basic communication skills. Phase two employed an academic intervention. Phase three developed a new diagnosis in argumentative writing skills. Finally, phase four developed a different intervention for argumentation. Consequently, this often leads to caregivers who are the patient’s relatives, which adversely impacts the workforce along with severely diminishing the quality of life for all involved. It is, therefore, highly desirable to develop a fast, effective and reliable sensor to enable early-stage detection in an attempt to reverse disease progression. This research validates the detection of amyloid-beta 42 (Aβ42) using a Silicon Carbide (SiC) electrode, a fact that is unprecedented in the literature. Crystalline silicon carbide (SiC) and silicon (Si) biocompatibility was evaluated in vitro by dir... more Crystalline silicon carbide (SiC) and silicon (Si) biocompatibility was evaluated in vitro by directly culturing three skin and connective tissue cell lines, two immortalized neural cell lines, and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) on these semiconducting substrates. The in vivo biocompatibility was then evaluated via implantation of 3C-SiC and Si shanks into a C57/BL6 wild type mouse. The in vivo results, while preliminary, were outstanding with Si being almost completely enveloped with activated microglia and astrocytes, indicating a severe immune system response, while the 3C-SiC film was virtually untouched. The in vitro experiments were performed specifically for the three adopted SiC polytypes, namely 3C-, 4H- and 6H-SiC, and the results were compared to those obtained for Si crystals. Electric Circuits courses include topics usually difficult for engineering students, where they m... more Electric Circuits courses include topics usually difficult for engineering students, where they must apply their knowledge of mathematics and physics. Additionally, students do not feel motivated to participate in traditional classes, where they have a passive role receiving the information provided by the professor. Consequently, course fail rates may be around 30% or higher. The paper presents one strategy to help students acquire knowledge and improve their performance in the course: evaluation through a competition game named Electric Circuit Olympics. For part of their grade, students compete, both in physical activities and solving problems in electric circuits. Results show that motivation improved, course fail rate decreased to 15% and average final grades increased from 3.4 to 3.7 when comparing a traditional class to the course tested with the Electric Circuit Olympics.

Coherence and cohesion in written texts are of great importance to efficiently communicate the ma... more Coherence and cohesion in written texts are of great importance to efficiently communicate the main ideas that the author wants to convey to the reader. However, it has been previously shown that not only engineering students have deficiencies in these aspects, but also, evaluating these aspects is of great difficulty. For this reason, this research focuses on the application of a methodology to assess the coherence and cohesion of texts written by engineering students of several semesters in careers such as computer systems, electrical and electronics engineering. To do this, an evaluation instrument was created; this instrument allows measuring the performance on these aspects to be measured in an isolated manner in order to clearly identify the difficulties that students have when writing texts. Engineering professionals need to employ argumentative skills to support their decisions. This re... more Engineering professionals need to employ argumentative skills to support their decisions. This research presents the findings of an intervention that was designed and implemented at two universities in Colombia, South America, to help students enhance their written argumentative skills through essays on ethical dilemmas. Engineering professors included explanations based on modelled examples that showed adequate argumentation and provided feedback to students. This experience included a pre-test, post-test and a brief intervention based on problembased learning (PBL). Results show that students improved in essay aspects such as the introduction, presenting and supporting a thesis, including evidence with proper references and the creation of a conclusion. Standardized national test results also support the benefits of this approach.

However, if RFID tags are attached to metal objects, detection errors may occur due to Foucault currents and interferences caused by multiple simultaneous reflections. Errors may increase if metal objects are moving. The paper presents a novel algorithm using RFID low-level reader variables, such as RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator), phase angle, and Doppler shift, to detect and trace metal objects. The algorithm was designed to identify if a tag is static or moving and, in the latter case, to compute its speed and direction. The algorithm differs from previous approaches since it uses a simple setup with one commercial portal reader coupled with one single element antenna. En el presente articulo se muestran los resultados y reflexiones del trabajo realizado en los p... more En el presente articulo se muestran los resultados y reflexiones del trabajo realizado en los programas de ingenieria Electrica, Electronica y de Sistemas en la Universidad del Norte, en el proceso de medicion y evaluacion del cumplimiento de los students outcomes de ABET, para la preparacion del procesos de acreditacion internacional. Este trabajo ha sido realizado por un grupo multidisciplinario de docentes que desarrollaron una metodologia para el diseno de las herramientas e intrumentos que permitieron recolectar la informacion para determinar el grado de cumplimiento especificamente del student outcome f: “an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility” . Atendiendo los lineamientos generales e institucionales para el proceso de autoevaluacion con miras a la acreditacion ABET, se difinieron las acciones que pudieran ser observables y medibles para que los estudiantes pudieran demostrar su desarrollo y evolucion de sus competencias. El student outcome f es una de las competencias que por sus caracteristicas propias, presenta unas dificultades interesantes para su medicion. El student outcome f esta clasificado por los expertos de la acredtiacion, dentro del grupo de competencias denominadas blandas, y que requiere de un abordaje innovador para su medicion. Fue asi como desde cada uno de los programas academicos, por intermedio de los comites curriculares y comites de departamento, se seleccionaron los cursos en donde se midieron las competencias de los estudiantes. Este proceso de seleccion definio dos momentos de medicion en el curriculo para elaborar un panorama de desarrollo de las competencias transversales en los programas. El trabajo de nuestro grupo, conformado por profesionales de varias disciplinas inicialmente trabajar para un proyecto de competencias comunicativas, permitio disenar unas herramientas para la medicion del outcome f y realizar una investigacion de aula. El punto de partida consistio en disenar una estrategia, que requirio de una historia en la que se plantearon situaciones hipoteticas, durante el ejercicio de la ingenieria con un contexto a la luz de los problemas que han sido noticia a nivel nacional e internacional. La evaluacion de los datos recolectados se realizo mediante una rubrica elaborada por otro grupo de docentes de la Division de Ingenierias. Las evaluaciones para la medicion del cumplimiento del student outcome f se realizaron a traves de ensayos elaborados mediante la tecnica de escritura argumentativa denominada “Ensayo de los cinco parrafos”. Los resultados de las evaluaciones mostraron que los estudiantes, a la luz de la rubrica, entienden el concepto de etica profesional, reconocen el marco legal y juridico de la responsabilidad etica y brindaron un conocimiento acerca del desarrollo alcanzado en esta competencia. Sin embargo, el grupo considera que la estrategia utilizada puede ser mejorada, con miras a obtener informacion que no fue posible medir con los instrumentos disenados.
