Problems surrounding the effective monitoring and assessment of the emotional, behavioural and situational context of cardiac variations in an ambulatory subject are discussed.

The aim of this study was to determine the validity of the Internet-based ESeRNet software for th... more The aim of this study was to determine the validity of the Internet-based ESeRNet software for the measurement of emotional music experiences by comparing the data of this study with those previously collected in a lab experiment. Participants (N = 83) listened to different music pieces online. At the same time they gave a continuous self-report about their emotional state by moving their computer-mouse in a two-dimensional emotion space and indicating chills (strong emotions accompanied by shivers down the spine or goose pimples) by clicking the mouse button. The emotional dimensions assessed were arousal and valence. Participants reported that the music pieces caused different emotional reactions that were not significantly different from the lab study using the same stimuli. Thus, the validity of this Internet-based method could be confirmed. In general, nearly all participants evaluated positively most aspects of the study-with the exception of the participation time. None of the technical parameters investigated at the participants' computers significantly affected the emotional self-report, but an influence of the self-rated concentration on arousal and chill ratings was observed. The results also show that experiments in the Web offer a promising way for emotion research and provide insights on emotions experienced when listening to music in every day life.

FEELINGS IN RESPONSE TO music are often accompanied by measurable bodily reactions such as goose ... more FEELINGS IN RESPONSE TO music are often accompanied by measurable bodily reactions such as goose bumps or shivers down the spine, commonly called "chills." In order to investigate distinct acoustical and musical structural elements related to chill reactions, reported chill reactions and bodily reactions were measured continuously. Chill reactions did not show a simple stimulus-response pattern or depend on personality traits, such as low sensation seeking and high reward dependence. Musical preferences and listening situations also played a role in chill reactions. Participants seemed to react to musical patterns, not to mere acoustical triggers. The entry of a voice and changes in volume were shown to be the most reactive patterns. These results were also confirmed by a retest experiment.

Systems, such as those built into cars and smart phones, usually using speech to direct the user towards their desired location. Sounds other than functional and speech sounds can, however, be used for directing people in distinct di-rections. The present paper compares response times with differ-ent stimuli and error rates in the detection. Functional sounds are chosen with and without intrinsic meanings, musical connotations, and stereo locations. Panned sine tones are identified as the fastest and most correctly identified stimuli in the test while speech is not identified faster than arbitrary sounds that have no particular meaning. 1.

Coding of speech signals at low bitrates, such as 16 kbps, has to rely on an efficient speech rep... more Coding of speech signals at low bitrates, such as 16 kbps, has to rely on an efficient speech reproduction model to achieve reasonable speech quality. However, for audio signals not fitting to the model this approach generally fails. On the other hand, generic audio codecs, designed to handle any kind of audio signal, tend to show unsatisfactory results for speech signals, especially at low bitrates. To overcome this, a process was initiated by ISO/MPEG, aiming to standardize a new codec with consistent high quality for speech, music and mixed content over a broad range of bitrates. After a formal listening test evaluating several proposals MPEG has selected the best performing codec as the reference model for the standardization process. This paper describes this codec in detail and shows that the new reference model reaches the goal of consistent high quality for all signal types.
