Grid systems enable the sharing of a large number of geographically-dispersed resources among dif... more Grid systems enable the sharing of a large number of geographically-dispersed resources among different communities of users. They require a mapping functionality for the association of users requests expressed in terms of requirements and preferences to actual resources. This functionality should deal with a potentially high number of similar resources and with the diversity of the perceived satisfactions of users. We propose XMatch, a query language enabling the expression of the user request in terms of the expected satisfaction over XML-based representation of available resources. This language offers a compact way for users to express their preferences for Grid resources and enable the maximization of the global preference.

We discuss the concept of service and service requestor. We investigate their mutual expectations and offered functionalities that involve both functional and non-functional requirements. The relation between nonfunctional requirements and quality attributes is presented by examining the related concepts of measurement and model. We contextualize the generic concept of service in the Web and Web services architecture and, finally, we briefly present current proposals for service functional and non-functional requirements description.

This chapter presents a fuzzy-based algebra, called SAME W , to query multimedia objects. SAME W ... more This chapter presents a fuzzy-based algebra, called SAME W , to query multimedia objects. SAME W allows for dealing within a common framework with several aspects relevant to similarity query processing as well as with the inherent imprecision that characterizes data, user requests, and query results. Non-Boolean, namely fuzzy and similarity, predicates are used to rank tuples according to specific criteria. Complex multi-predicate queries can be formed by means of logical connectives, whose semantics is parameterized in order to adapt to specific scenarios. The same holds for the semantics of algebraic operators. These include properly extended traditional relational operators and new operators which allow threshold and best-matches queries to be easily expressed. A further important feature of SAME W is the possibility of weighting both predicates and operands of algebraic operators so as to better fit user preferences/requirements. A working example dealing with Web data is used throughout the chapter to show the potentialities of SAME W . Optimization issues are also briefly discussed.
