An approach is proposed for the design and implementation of traffic light controllers using FPGAs. The focus of this study is to develop an effective traffic signalling strategy to be implemented at a typical intersection. The hardware and software development platform used for final implementation is the Altium NanoBoard 3000 Xilinx Edition, along with the Altium Designer package. The NanoBoard 3000 was newly released from Altium and it provided a convenient FPGA platform and all the necessary IP, IP Synthesis, and compilers needed to prototype the design and perform further research.
