Teachers’ appraisal of various aspects of the efficiency of homogeneous and heterogeneous learning groups

In the present study, we were interested in the appraisal by teachers who have had experience wit... more In the present study, we were interested in the appraisal by teachers who have had experience with an individual form of differentiation of the efficiency of grouping learners into homogenous or heterogeneous groups. In the study, seven aspects were thus considered: (1) the learning performance and motivation of learners, (2) the learners' activity, (3) didactic ways of adapting teaching to diverse learners, (4) the impact on the formation of learners' personality, (5) cooperation among learners, (6) opportunities for professional development, and (7) cooperation with parents. The research has shown that there is a statistically significant difference between the teachers who teach in homogeneous groups and the teachers who teach in heterogeneous groups in all the seven aspects of the appraisal of the efficiency of grouping learners into homogenous or heterogeneous groups. Regarding most of the assertions, teachers belonging to both groups perceive the way of teaching they perform as having the most advantages.

We present a study in which we consider whether the learners, who had mathematics instruction in ... more We present a study in which we consider whether the learners, who had mathematics instruction in the 9th grade of primary school in heterogeneous groups, significantly differed in their mathematics achievements measured by using the external and internal assessment of knowledge from the learners in homogeneous groups. No statistically significant differences in the average achievements were found in the external assessment. On the contrary, in the internal assessment of knowledge the learners in homogenous groups on average had significantly higher achievements in comparison to the learners in heterogeneous groups. The analysis of covariance performed in homogenous and heterogeneous ability groups showed that the learners, who were placed in the lower or middle third after the initial examination in their school, in the final external examination progressed relatively better in heterogeneous groups. There are many factors associated with effective instruction that should be taken into account by... more There are many factors associated with effective instruction that should be taken into account by school policy, the school as an institution and each individual teacher. The teacher’s role is of utmost importance when it comes to factors influencing the didactic design of instruction, among which we focus on within-class pupil grouping. The paper presents a study that examined attitudes and experiences of Slovenian primary school teachers with planning, implementing and evaluating within-class pupil grouping. The results of teacher assessments of the effectiveness of each form of grouping show that teachers give the highest rating to individualised learning. Among the disadvantages of interactive grouping, teachers emphasize time consumption. Thus, we present the didactic innovation of flipped learning and teaching, which offers the opportunity for more frequent use of interactive grouping.

Self-Assessment by Self-Questioning in the Instructional and Practical Phases of Mathematics Learning

In this paper, we present a study in which we developed a self-assessment model based on students... more In this paper, we present a study in which we developed a self-assessment model based on students’ self-questioning, and investigated its impact on improving the accuracy of students’ self-assessment. The impact of the model was determined on a sample of 164 Grade 7 students in the instructional and practical phases of mathematics learning. It was found that the use of the model resulted in improved accuracy in students’ self-assessment in both phases and, for low- and high- achievers.

To achieve the goals of modern science and technology teaching, it is vital to organize student-c... more To achieve the goals of modern science and technology teaching, it is vital to organize student-centred instruction (SCI). The organization of SCI requires the teacher’s ability to organize cognitively challenging teaching in a stimulating environment. The fundamental purpose of the study was to determine whether the teacher’s organization of SCI was related to factors at the school level (organizational context) and factors at the individual level (individual context). We designed a model comprising four sets of factors. The results show a statistically significant correlation between SCI and all four sets of factors.

Knowing motivations is relevant to both school policy and teacher educators in order to tailor initial and further training accordingly, thus enabling individuals to be best equipped to meet the challenges of their careers. In the present article, we were interested in why Slovenian and Serbian preschool teachers choose their profession, how the preschool teachers with different motivations for their choice perceive their profession as a career, what factors they consider to have an impact on their career development, and what expectations they have in relation to it. The study was based on a survey approach and included 289 preschool teachers from Serbia and Slovenia. U članku se raspravlja o definiciji i značenju didaktičke inovacije u kontekstu suvremenoga inova... more U članku se raspravlja o definiciji i značenju didaktičke inovacije u kontekstu suvremenoga inovativnog okruženja za učenje. Fokus je na inovacijama koje potiču poučavanje usmjereno na učenika, a među njima naglasak je na obrnutom učenju. Prikazana je terminologija i koncept obrnutoga učenja, njegove prednosti i ograničenja. U radu je prikazana i kvalitativna studija koja ilustrira stavove učitelja i učenika koji imaju iskustva s obrnutim učenjem. Postavili smo tri istraživačka pitanja koja su povezana s uvođenjem, provedbom i procjenom ove inovacije. Sudionici istraživanja prepoznali su tri glavne prednosti obrnutoga učenja: učeničku kognitivnu aktivnost, kreativnost učenika i priliku da se diferencira i individualizira nastava. Doseganje tehnoloske pismenosti tako postaja pomemben imperativ nacionalnih politik, pri njegovem uresnicevanju pa imata kljucno vlogo izobraževanje in ustrezna usposobljenost uciteljev. V raziskavi nas je zanimalo, kaksna je tehnoloska pismenost studentov, bodocih uciteljev, kaksne so njihove izkusnje s tehnoloskim izobraževanjem v osnovni soli, kako studenti, bodoci ucitelji, ocenjujejo pomembnost tehnoloskega izobraževanja v osnovni soli in v procesu studija na fakulteti ter kako ocenjujejo vlogo in pomen tehnologije v življenju posameznika in družbe.
