So far the food security is cereal-based (mainly rice) and food basket has not yet diversified towards high nutritive/ quality food. This article has examined the expenditure inequalities in the dietary pattern and incidence of poverty in Bangladesh by using household income, expenditure and food consumption survey data. Results have shown wide-spread inequalities in income and expenditure distribution. Among food items, the inequalities have been found very low for cereals and high for livestock and horticulture commodities and various types of fish species in both rural and urban areas. The analysis of food poverty, its depth and severity has revealed a typical hidden poverty that could not be brought up by analyzing economic poverty. Global aquaculture production increased with an average rate of 10% per year since 1990 and 90% o... more Global aquaculture production increased with an average rate of 10% per year since 1990 and 90% of aquaculture production comes from developing countries thus providing livelihood and income especially to marginal groups who have limited access to resources such as agricultural land and financial capital. Geographical information systems (GIS) based decision support models can facilitate the prioritizing of national research, development and extension strategies and targeting of development assistance for aquaculture because they can provide information to stakeholders as to where and under what conditions certain aquaculture technologies would be feasible. Factors that determine the adoption of aquaculture technologies by farmers include agro-ecological (rainfall, temperature, soil type, slope), socioeconomic (land, labor, capital, infrastructure, inputs), and institutional characteristics (extension services, producers' organizations). While maps can be used to display the agro-ecological factors, many important socioeconomic and institutional variables are not explicitly spatial (such as household land holdings or access to education and credits). To enable the integration of socioeconomic variables in GIS models, we suggest a methodology comprising of four stages: (1) identification of key factors for successful adoption of target technologies on the micro-level, (2) development of indicators on the meso-level, (3) generation of geo-referenced meso-level indicator data sets for the target area, and (4) assignment of ranking/weights to the indicators. The paper outlines the conceptual framework applied and highlights some of the inherent methodological challenges. Results of the adoption analysis for aquaculture in Bangladesh and Malawi, representing different levels of aquaculture production intensification, are presented and discussed.

Agriculture and Livelihoods in the Flood-prone Ecosystem in Thailand

The study aimed to assess recent changes in agriculture and livelihoods of farmers in the flood-p... more The study aimed to assess recent changes in agriculture and livelihoods of farmers in the flood-prone ecosystem of Thailand. One thousand two hundred and sixty-six households were randomly interviewed by using a structured questionnaire in twenty provinces under the ecosystem during 2000/2001. The findings revealed that Thailand had a favorable endowment of land with an average size of holding of 4.73 ha. The size of holding varied greatly across regions. Tenancy cultivation has been widespread (41% of the land) because of the high incidence of rural-urban migration. Most of the household heads had only primary level education. High diversity of rice varieties was found due to widespread cultivation of local varieties in the rainfed lands. Irrigation infrastructure has expanded greatly in the flood-prone ecosystem contributing to intensification of cropping. But the monocrop of flood-prone rice was still dominant. The double cropping of rice was found to vary from 5 to 28 percent in shallow flooded areas, and from 10 to 30 percent in deepflooded areas depending on the regions. The incidence of double cropping of modern varieties was still low. The average rice yield increased from 2.20 to 2.78 t/ha. The costs of rice cultivation was mainly on account of material inputs particularly, chemical fertilizers and machine rental charge. An average household earned about Baht 128,000, mostly from non-farm activities. Agriculture accounted for only 38 percent of the household income, and rice cultivation only 22 percent. The rural household income was highly unequally distributed. Rice cultivation accounted for a small fraction of income inequality. The level of income and riceûs share of household income varied greatly across regions, depending mostly on the size of landholding and the opportunity of non-farm employment.

The globalization of market economy, products and services marketing helped many developing countries to enhance sectoral growth and emerge their national economy. India is a large democratic country in the world with spacious diversity of language, caste, culture and habits of the people. The country is large in many accounts and currently it has about 1.25 billion population, out of which over one-thirds are living below the poverty line. These economically and socially poor people are mostly resourceless people and wage labourers involved in various informal and unorganized sectors for their livelihood. Most of the socio-economically poor do not have adequate access to financial and social amenities due to various reasons. The country urged to move fast for social and human development of its all citizens. It is important for the country to manage socioeconomic vulnerability of economically poor people and inequalities of livelihoods capitals which are unparallel with ups and down in the era of economic development and want to improve livelihoods of all.

This is mainly due to the commitment of the state supported by donors in providing preventive care with respect to child health and family planning. However, there are serious problems related to both access and quality of curative care that hurt the poor most. Infrastructures for service delivery exist at local level in rural areas but they function inefficiently. This paper deals with the systemic weaknesses of decentralized service provision of primary healthcare in Bangladesh and focuses on accountability links between different actors and functions of delegation, finance, performance, information and enforcement. The study is based on facility-and household-based data collected during 2005 in Khulna Division. The main findings of the study are: the health system in rural areas represents deconcentration rather than decentralization of central government functions where inter-sectoral discipline works poorly; local health providers are not accountable to local government, and poor citizens/clients are neither aware of their rights nor are capable of expressing their needs as effective channels do not exist.

& Applications of a rapid appraisal approach to identify locally available feed ingredients in fe... more & Applications of a rapid appraisal approach to identify locally available feed ingredients in feed formulation, production, and socio-economics of Nile tilapia aquaculture in Bangladesh are discussed. Three diets of 35%, 30%, and 25% crude protein were formulated using locally available ingredients, and their essential amino acid profiles were assessed for Nile tilapia. Six production scenarios were constructed using these diets and two culture periods of 100 and 150 days were considered. The production scenarios with 35% protein yielded the highest productivity and profitability over the 150-day culture period followed by the 30% protein scenario. Identification of locally available ingredients and their application in small-scale Nile tilapia aquaculture may lead to: (1) increased availability of inexpensive sources of fish production for poor people; (2) increased fish consumption; (3) increased self employment and involvement of women in productive activities; and (4) increased household income to reduce poverty.
