The ever-changing advancement in digital technology is transforming the traditional ways of desig... more The ever-changing advancement in digital technology is transforming the traditional ways of designing, implementing and assessing development projects, thus encouraging integration of digital technologies into how Monitoring and Evaluation (M & E) has been done. This position paper investigates the shifts in M & E, scrutinizing the increased need for real-time data, the role of artificial intelligence, advancement in data analysis, the role of stakeholders and data governance in the digital era. Learning from a variety of literature and case studies regarding digital M & E, the authors argue for an encompassing and ethically driven approach to digital M & E. It necessitates continuous learning, participatory approach to implementation of M & E related activities and standardized operation procedures for comparison across different geographies. Authors conclude with various practical recommendations for practitioners, policy makers and researchers on how they could leverage the use of digital tools to improve real-time data use and evidence-based decision making, to ensure timely adoption and mitigation of strategies that are working or not, which will strengthen efficient and effective use resources and achievement of sustainable development goals.
