In this study, an equivalent electric circuit model of Earth's upper crust is proposed to explain... more In this study, an equivalent electric circuit model of Earth's upper crust is proposed to explain the behavior of measurement patterns acquired from network of the earthquake forecast project. A multi-layer capacitor model having active components that couples with the monopolar probe close to the surface is used to determine earthquake precursory patterns due to structural changes in time. Equivalent circuit model was developed for a) dilatency process that is assumed to be a stress weakening reason and b) external force source that increases shear stress over the fault until sudden decrement before the earthquake. A data acquisition system consisting of 15 online measurement stations in Marmara region and a data processing center has been established three years ago. Many anomalies which can be distinguished from regular daily behavior of the signal patterns were observed that thought to be associated with the earthquakes with the magnitude greater than 4 and close less than 150 kilometers to the nearest station.

Rates of crustal deformation in western Turkey as deduced from major earthquakes

Abstract Western Turkey has undergone dominantly N-S extension, probably since the late Miocene. ... more Abstract Western Turkey has undergone dominantly N-S extension, probably since the late Miocene. This extensional regime caused the formation of E-W trending grabens and similarly orientated normal faults. The rates of deformation of the seismogenic layer caused by the major earthquakes (Ms⩾5.5) during the period between 1943 and 1983 are calculated for western Anatolia. This region is first analysed as a single system and then divided into two provinces, namely the Marmara and southwestern Anatolian provinces, which are investigated as two separate seismotectonic units. The dominant mode of deformation in the Marmara province is amounting to right-lateral displacement 24.0 mm/yr. Other modes of upper crustal deformation in this province can be explained by an average 7.1 mm/yr N-S extension, 10.0 mm/yr E-W contraction, and 0.13 mm/yr thinning of a 10 km seismogenic layer. The dominant mode of deformation in southwestern Anatolia is about 13.5 mm/yr extension in the N-S direction. This region is also undergoing E-W extension of about 3.6 mm/yr, justifying the separation of Marmara and southwestern Anatolian provinces as two different seismotectonic provinces. The average rate of thinning of the seismogenic layer in this area is 0.5 mm/yr which is consistent with large-scale normal faulting observed here. It is found that N-S extension in western Anatolia increases from north to south, while E-W compression in the Marmara province changes to E-W extension in southwestern Anatolia. It is suggested that these kinematics may explain the present bending of the North Anatolian Transform, forming a transtensional basin between the Marmara and southwestern Anatolian provinces.

Spatial and temporal analysis of seismicity of the Pütürge Fault, and Gutenberg-Richter parameters before and after Sivrice-Doğanyol earthquake

Spatial and temporal distributions of epicenters of this activity, focal mechanism solutions and ... more Spatial and temporal distributions of epicenters of this activity, focal mechanism solutions and Gutenberg-Richter parameters (Mc, a-and b-values) show remarkable patterns. Mechanism solutions of Mw≥5.0 magnitude earthquakes prove that the Pütürge Fault is a left-lateral strike-slip fault with a northwest dipping plane. It was observed that the increase in Mc value before January 24, 2020 Sivrice-Doğanyol mainshock started simultaneously with a light earthquake of Mw4.9 on December 27, 2019, 28 days before the main earthquake. The decrease trend in b-value started on September 8, 2019, 139 days before the mainshock, and on December 27, 2019, the b-value decreased to the lowest level of 0.6. The reason for the increase in Mc value and the significant decrease of the b-value before the January 24, 2020 Sivrice-Doğanyol earthquake may be the effect of the increase in the effective stress on the Pütürge Fault before the earthquake and the change in physical process. Similar findings regarding the decrease of the b-value of seismic activity before large and strong earthquakes have been observed and published for many earthquakes in the world. Studies on this subject are ongoing, and bvalue can be considered to use as a long or mid-term warning mechanism before a major earthquake in the future.

Location Akhisar-Golmarmara region of Manisa City (western Turkey) Methods Spatial and temporal changes of Gutenberg-Richter parameters (b-value, a-value and Mc value) were analyzed using ZMAP algorithm. Results Two of the four earthquake activities in Akhisar-Golmarmara (western Turkey) had an obvious b-value decreasing pattern. It is suggested that the reason for the decrease in b-value is related to the increase in effective stress on normal faults before the activity.

No resulting injuries or damage were reported. The quake struck in an area that has seen relatively little seismic activity in the past century. In fact, the area has not seen a moderate (magnitude-5.0) or greater earthquake in the past 120 years, which is odd in one of the most seismically active countries in the world. This quake has some scientists puzzling over its origins and wondering if it is evidence for a hypothesized shear zone. Major active fault locations around Central Anatolia and Eastern Anatolia. The Kinematics of the East Anatolian Fault Zone, Eastern Turkey and Seismotectonic Implications

One of most prominent and active faults in Eastern Turkey is the NE-SW oriented left-lateral stri... more One of most prominent and active faults in Eastern Turkey is the NE-SW oriented left-lateral strike-slip East Anatolian Fault Zone (EAFZ) with a length of approximately 500 km. In this study, we have examined the recent seismicity of EAFZ that was obtained from the records of 34 three-dimensional broad-band earthquake stations established around the fault zone within TURDEP project since 2006. Further the seismicity and fault mechanism solutions of EAFZ, Eastern Turkey have been examined. The new fault mechanism solutions in addition to previously published 220 earthquakes, with a magnitude of ML=2.0 or more were determined by a local moment tensor solution and P-wave first motion data. It was suggested that the recent tectonic deformation of EAFZ south of Türkoğlu was taken up by the left-lateral strike-slip active faults in between Amik and Adana Basins were young trans-tensional stress regime was also active.

Analysis of the magnitude of the earthquake, the distribution of aftershocks and the location of ... more Analysis of the magnitude of the earthquake, the distribution of aftershocks and the location of the earthquake reveals that a 7-kilometer-long part of the right-hand strike-slip Karadere Fault ruptured (Özalp and Kürçer, 2022). The focal mechanism solutions for the event published by various earthquake organizations (e.g., the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC)) confirm that a part of this fault was activated. During the 1999 Gölcük earthquake, the Karadere Fault also moved and created aftershocks in the northeast-southwest direction (Figure 1). However, no obvious faulting traces could be observed in the area related to the earthquake. Özalp and Kürçer (2022) detected some cracks in the field, but they stated that these were lateral spreading fractures formed on alluvial formations during the earthquake (Figure 2). In other words, these features may not indicate surface rupture.
