Contribution to the making of the episode "Sex, Saints and Rock'n Roll", for the three-part documentary TV series entitled "1968mm" (Italy-Germany 2017, directed by Felix Kriegsheim, Jerry Rothwell, and Stefano Strocchi)

This year was also marked by turning points in the Civil Rights and Feminist movements and the rise of a diverse “Counter Culture” which rattled the very core of the mainstream. The unique three-part series 1968mm, tells the story of that epic year in a fresh new way: through the stories and home-movies of those who were there.Decades after this climactic year, we are seeing a recurrence of worldwide upheaval. The revolu- tions of the Arab Spring and the “Occupy” move- ments in North America and Europe carry an echo of 1968. However, unlike today, where move- ments are extensively recorded and instantly communicated around the world through endless streams of personal digital videos, photos, and tweets, 1968 was a time without video, internet, or cell phones. 50 years away, let’s discover 1968 from a new point of view, not through the events that made it into history books, but the unknown stories of people that, just like today with smart- phones, filmed history with their 8mm and S8mm cameras.

Such a phenomenon characterized domestic film production to a very large extent, therefore beyond budget and marketing implications, as well as auteur ambitions. In this context, the mystery-thriller films of the so-called “giallo” established a peculiar relation with violence against women at large, as they encoded it in the narrative mechanisms and in the development of the genre itself by means of subject-related marketing strategies and audience expectations. Quickly brought to popularity in the wake of Dario Argento’s works, over the years the “giallo” has been widely investigated precisely on the grounds of its defining featuring of violence against women, with most outcomes interpreting its psychological and allegorical aspects against the background of Italy’s contemporaneous social history. The aim of this essay is to enrich the interpretation field on this subject, prompting a reflection on such images and imagery of violence in the light of what were the practices, beliefs and expectations about violence against women beyond fiction, in the everyday life of 1970s Italy.

Bender, 1967). Most Catholics were initially fearful and skeptical about the film and its pedagogical potential, and condemned in particular the decision by the national censorship board that the film was “suitable for all”. However, as the weeks went on, and while the film surprisingly topped the box office, their position became less hostile, and more and more nuanced, to the point that some Catholic teachers started testing “Helga” with teenage classes on sex education.

Thesis for PhD in Film Studies. The University of Winchester, UK. Supervisors: Leighton Grist, Steven Allen, and Neil McCaw, 2014

Generally associated with film cycles and formulas popularly known as giallo (or giallo all'italiana) and poliziottesco, these films achieved resounding success at the national box-office by conjugating the aesthetic of foreign crime films and formulas with clear references to the grim and violent Italian reality. The aim of this thesis is to assess how, and to what extent, problems and concerns associated with contemporaneous historical events had effectively influenced their production and consumption, as well as their generic identity. In contrast with traditional (and prevailing) critical accounts, this thesis contends that these films and their generic images are less concerned with terrorism and related political extremism than they are with other contemporaneous social events, such as the reigniting of culturally deep-seated regional tensions, and the crisis of a national benchmark such as the patriarchal family. In discussing this point, this thesis provides a thorough historical contextualization of the Leaden Years which does not rest exclusively on political-terrorist issues, but takes into account other topical social problems, as well as reconstructing the cultural and political-ideological complexity that marked this era. Arguments in support of this thesis have been crucially elaborated through referencing historiographical material and critical sources mostly from Italy, in an attempt to further provide the examination of these films and of their generic identity with an Italian critical and cultural perspective to date scarcely represented in the Anglo-American film studies upon which the theoretical body of the Italian crime film is prevalently built.
