However, solar PV systems have a challenge of low conversion efficiency because most of the irradiances of the sun, which are channelled to the PV panels, are not fully utilized for power consumption. A more challenging situation of the system occurs when some of its panels are obstructed from full reception of the solar irradiance, a case referred to as partial shading conditions (PSC) in solar PV systems. This leads to the generation of multiple, unequal power peaks in the system, from which the one with the highest power must be tracked for optimum utilization of the system. To this regard, this work presents a modified firefly algorithm-based controller, tied operationally with a DC–DC boost converter. A model was developed and simulated on MATLAB, for tracking the maximum power point of the system, both at constant solar irradi...

Development of Fractional Order Controller for Load Frequency Control of Multi Area Interconnected Microgrid Power System
2021 1st International Conference on Multidisciplinary Engineering and Applied Science (ICMEAS), 2021
The integration of renewable energy sources into the grid affects the dynamic operation, as well ... more The integration of renewable energy sources into the grid affects the dynamic operation, as well as response of the power system-to-system disturbances in terms of change in power flow patterns and sensitivity of the system to faults. Thus minimising the frequency and tie-line power deviation within the accepted operating standard in multiple areas of interconnected power system is paramount. This work focused on the development of fractional order controllers for load frequency control of multi-area interconnected micro-grid power system. The fractional order proportional integral derivative (FOPID) controller was developed by replacing the integer order rate of the error at the input by its fractional order counterpart (μ). This was achieved by implementing an effective two area interconnected micro-gird power system with addition of renewable energy resources under the conditions of multiple disturbances and low system inertia. The gains of the developed controllers optimized using grasshopper optimization algorithm (GOA) and smell algorithm optimization (SAO) by minimizing integral absolute error (IAE), integral of square error (ISE), integral time absolute error (ITAE) and integral time squared error (ITSE) performance criterion.. In the minimum fitness values obtained from our simulation, the SAO optimized PID Controller has the best fitness value from ISE criterion from this research work. It outperformed the PID_GOA and FuzzyPID _GOA developed in (Lal et al., 2018) by 208% and 685% respectively.

The existing capacitor-run single phase induction motor exhibits a significant level of torque pulsations during starting time and at steady state. This situation gives rise to noise and vibration in the machine. As part of efforts to mitigate these problems, an open loop two phase inverter drive strategy was developed and implemented in MATLAB/Simulink to reduce undesirable pulsations. Simulation results clearly show the superiority of motor performance under the proposed strategy when compared to motor performance under nominal power supply. Torque pulsations are eliminated at steady state with the consequence of reduced noise and heat loss to the environment. The motor is observed to develop significantly higher starting torque and its reliability is significantly increased as the strategy eliminates the need for capacitors a...

Cultured Artificial Fish Swarm Algorithm: An Experimental Evaluation

This algorithm can adaptively select its parameters at every generation in order to reduce the ease at which standard AFSA falls into local optimal. We first introduce inertial weight to adaptively determine visual distance and step size of AFSA thereafter, the Situational and Normative knowledge inherent in cultural algorithm are used to develop new variants of weighted cultural AFSA (wCAFSA Ns, wCAFSA sd, wCAFSA Ns+Sd and wCAFSA Ns+Nd). A collection of sixteen (16) optimization benchmark functions are used to test the performance of the algorithms. The simulation results disclosed that all the new variants of the wCAFSA outclassed the AFSA.

Hence, contingency assessment is an important task for stable and effective operation of power system. In this paper, a method of placement of interline power flow controller (IPFC) based on the probability of severity has been proposed. Contingency ranking of lines has been done using Composite Severity Index which is a probabilistic based strategy for the placement of IPFC. IPFC is placed on the line with highest probability of severity during the occurrence of different outages. Thereafter, the size of the IPFC was optimized using cuckoo search algorithm. The proposed methodology has been applied on the IEEE 14 bus system data and results presented. The system overall CSI, active and reactive power were reduced by 7.31%, 10.17% and 14.46% respectively. The results show that optimal placement of IPFC effectively reduce...

Many speed control techniques exist in literature but this paper presents the design of a simple PI controller and its use to control the speed of a three-phase induction motor. A controller design that applies the Phase margin (PM) as the stability criterion is employed. The cross-over frequency and phase margin of the open loop gain of motor and controller are specified in order to develop a stable control system. The three-phase induction motor model is presented and modified for the purpose of control. A comparative analysis between the motor performance with and without the PI controller was performed. The unit step response of the speed cont...

We first formulate the relay coordination as a single objective multi-variable optimization problem. The main objective of the optimization is to optimize the time required for operation of the protective relays. We employed the IEEE standard 15-bus and IEEE standard 30-bus test networks to implement the OCR methods. Simulations were carried using Matlab R2019b and results were compared with Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). Experimental analysis of results showed that both SAO and PSO algorithms are effective in solving the relay coordination problem. The SAO obtained a better solution when compared with the PSO, however, the PSO convergence was faster than SAO.

The study identified lighting system as a major source through which energy is being wasted, hence efficient energy saving lighting systems are being proffered; also saving accrued were determined to justify their deployment. In the course of this work, an energy saving calculating tool was developed to calculate energy saving capabilities using energy efficient lamps. With ample devotion to the implementation of the recommendations made, the cost of energy per car will be drastically reduced while profits are also made simultaneously. In all, more cars will be produced thus translating to more employment opportunities in the industry.

The factors that affect the efficacy and stability of power supply in any developing country/region could be classified as follows: government policy; economy factor; natural factor; society/community factor; effective energy management; skilled personnel; efficient technology and security factor. All these factors mentioned above have direct or indirect influence on the stability and efficiency of power supply. Various numbers of complicating factors that can prevent restructuring of energy sector to create electricity market that can improve efficiency of power supply in Nigeria are analysed. Suggestions of steps or actions that should be taken into consideration before proposing solutions to some of the problems of power sector are also highlighted in this paper.
