Twenty-two strains of the tobacco caterpillar, Spodoptera litura (F .) (Lepidoptera: Noctllidae),... more Twenty-two strains of the tobacco caterpillar, Spodoptera litura (F .) (Lepidoptera: Noctllidae), collected from grollndnut crops of eight locations in Andhra Pradesh, India, between 1991 and 1996 were assayed in the Fl gener ation for resistance to commonly used insecticides. Resistance levels ranged as follows: cypermethrin, 0•2-to 197-fold; fen valerate, 8-to I21-fold; endosulfan, I to 13-fold; quinalphos, 1-to 29-fold; monocrotophos, 2-to 362-fold and methomyl, 0•7-to 19-fold. In nearly all strains pre-treatment with the metabolic inhibitor, piperonyl butoxide, resulted in complete suppression of cypermethrin resistance (2-to 121-fold synergism), indicating that enhanced detoxification by microsomal P450-dependent monooxygenases was probably the major mecha nism of pyrethroid resistance. Pre-treatment with the synergist DEF, an inhibitor of esterases and the glutathione S-transferase system, resulted in a 2-[0 3-fold synergism with monocrotophos indicating that esterases and possibly gluta thione S-transferases were at least to some extent contributing to organophosphate resistance.

Cypermethrin, fenvalerate, endosulfan, quinalphos, monocrotophos and methomyl insecticides were topically applied to 30–40 mg, first laboratory generation larvae and resistance determined from log dose probit bioassays. Significant levels of cypermethrin and fenvalerate resistance were found in all field strains, demonstrating that resistance to at least some pyrethroids is now ubiquitous in H. armigera populations in the Indian subcontinent; cypermethrin and fenvalerate resistance levels ranged from 5– to 6500–fold and 16– to 3200–fold respectively. Two larval-pupal tachinid parasitoids; Goniophthalmus halli (Mesnil) and Senometopia (Eucarcelia)... more Two larval-pupal tachinid parasitoids; Goniophthalmus halli (Mesnil) and Senometopia (Eucarcelia) illota (Curran) were recorded from the pupae of Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner) on pigeonpea crop in Andhra Pradesh, India, between 1974 and 1996. Both the parasitoids enter in diapause following the signals received from their host and maintain close proximity in their development in nondiapausing and diapausing H. armigera populations. It is suggested that parasitoid diapause is induced by the physiological changes in late larval or pupal stage of the host and was observed in seasons when host diapause occurred and followed synchrony in terms of emergence for both the host and parasitoids. This is the first report of diapause in tachinid parasitoids from the southern region of Indian sub-continent.

Besides insects, nematodes emerged as parasites. While Hexamermis spp. were common in most lepidoptera, Ooomermis albicans (Siebold) was recovered from Heliolhis spp. The nematodes were active, even more than insect parasites, during early monsoon. They were more active on light-soils than on heavy-soils. Against Heliothis armigera (Hubner) in particular, their incidence was more on "low-growing" crops like Arachis hypogaea (L.), and Lycopersiron esculentum (L.), and weeds. Millsp.) has a narrow genetic base; hence, utilization of wild relatives in the crossing programme would broaden its genetic base and introduce useful traits. Cajanus platycarpus (Benth.) Maesen, an annual wild relative from the tertiary gene pool, was successfully crossed with the cultigen, utilizing hormone‐aided pollinations, embryo rescue and tissue culture techniques, and backcrossed using cultigen as the recurrent parent. Advance generation progeny showed a range of useful traits such as resistance to phytophthora blight, pod borer, bruchid and podfly resistance. The cultivated chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) produces hybrids with only two annual wild species, ... more The cultivated chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) produces hybrids with only two annual wild species, C. reticulatum and C. echinospermum. Cicer reticulatum is considered to be progenitor of cultivated chickpea. Both C. reticulatum and C. echinospermum, which are cross-compatible with the cultigen, are placed in the secondary gene pool. The remaining six annual wild Cicer species and the 34 perennial Cicer species do not naturally cross with the cultivated species and therefore are grouped into the tertiary gene pool. The genus Cicer has not been extensively investigated for crossability, taxonomy, cytology, genetics, breeding, and molecular biology. Although techniques are available to cross incompatible annual species from the tertiary gene pool with the cultivated species, hybrids are not available for the improvement of chickpea. Lack of crossability information on perennial species, which have several important genes, indicates that the enormous genetic potential of these species remains unexplored. Experimental evidence indicates that the barriers to hybridization between the primary gene pool and perennial Cicer species are post-zygotic and due to embryo abortion. Application of growth regulators delays embryo abortion up to 15–17 days but not to the stage of mature seeds. Considering the enormous potential of wild species in chickpea crop improvement, emphasis should be given to overcome barriers to hybridization with the cultivated species. Research on the presence of flavonoids in wild Cicer species conferring disease and pest resistance should be strengthened. Emphasis should also be given to the development of a robust molecular marker system for diversity analysis and eventual widespread use in marker-assisted introgression of genes from the wild Cicer species to cultivated forms.

Dual-chamber microbial fuel cells (MFCs), made of clayware cylinder, were operated at different c... more Dual-chamber microbial fuel cells (MFCs), made of clayware cylinder, were operated at different chemical oxygen demands: ammonium-nitrogen (COD:[Formula: see text]) ratio (1:1, 10:1 and 5:1) under batch mode for simultaneous removal of ammonia and organic matter from wastewater. Ammonium-N removal efficiencies of 63-32.66% were obtained for COD:[Formula: see text] ratio of 1:10, respectively. Average COD removal efficiencies demonstrated by these MFCs were about 88%; indicating effective use of MFCs for treatment of wastewater containing organic matter and high ammonia concentration. MFCs operated with COD:[Formula: see text] ratio of 10:1 produced highest volumetric power density of 752.88 mW/m(3). The ammonium-N removal slightly increased when microbes were exposed to only ammonium as a source of electron when organic source was not supplemented. When this MFC was operated with imposed potential on cathode and without aeration in the cathode chamber, oxidation of ammonium ions at a faster rate confirmed anaerobic oxidation. During the non-turnover condition of cyclic voltammetry, MFC operated with COD:[Formula: see text] ratio of 10:1 gave higher oxidative and reductive currents than MFC operated with COD:[Formula: see text] ratio of 1:1 due to higher redox species. Successful application of such an anammox process for ammonium oxidation in MFCs will be useful for treatment of wastewater containing higher ammonium concentration and harvesting energy in the form of electricity.

Cajanus platycarpus, a distantly related wild species, was successfully crossed with cultivated p... more Cajanus platycarpus, a distantly related wild species, was successfully crossed with cultivated pigeonpea using embryo rescue and tissue culture techniques. Advance generation lines showed a range of desirable characters including cytoplasmic male sterility. A range of pigeonpea cultivars restored fertility and was maintained by a few lines including cultivar ICPL 85010. Clasmogamous flowers were observed in the male sterile lines. In such flowers anthers did not form di-adlephous bundle. Cytological analysis revealed that meiosis proceeded normally till the tetrad stage in those anthers with pollen grains. After which many of the pollen grains turned sterile. In the anthers with pollen grains, dehiscence was not observed, thus creating functional sterility. In many other anthers, pollen mother cells (PMCs) were not formed at all, giving rise to sepalous anthers. In conclusion two mechanisms of male sterility existed, one was premeiotic, where PMCs did not form and in the second, although PMCs gave rise to pollen grains, they were either partially or totally sterile accompanied by nondehiscence of anther wall.
