CIMAD - A Framework For The Development Of Context-Aware and Multi-Channel Cultural Heritage Services

The CIMAD project, “Common Infrastructure/Context Influenced Mobile Acquisition and Delivery of cultural heritage data" presented in this paper is a framework concerned with the development of cultural heritage “services” designed and implemented within the EU Network of Excellence EPOCH – Excellence in Processing Open Cultural Heritage. CIMAD aims to address a range of context-aware and multi-channel services in the cultural heritage domain, i.e. data acquisition, content delivery, monitoring, and management. The innovative aspect of CIMAD is that it helps the development team in mastering the complexity of building, customizing and integrating site specific cultural heritage services, thus making the different implementation activities more productive and cost-effective

Focusing on this question, the authors report on their activities started with MUSE, a project started within the Italian National Research Program on Cultural Heritage PARNASO and continued within the "Mobile and Ambient Systems" Work Group of the European Network of Excellence in Open Cultural Heritage as part of the CIMAD project. The authors use their experience on a 7th Framework Programme project called SOFIA within the ARTEMIS Joint Technology Initiative to consider future and prospective research directions and present a vision of how Cultural Heritage would benefit from making "information" in the physical world available for smart services.

The course consists of a lab module where students are asked to propose, develop and demonstrate simple smart environment applications. Specifically, the course is built around Smart-M3, the open source interoperability component of an open innovation platform developed within the European Project SOFIA (2009-11). This paper illustrates the above summarized course, presenting the design style and the application development flow specifically devised for the course, the students evaluation approach taken, the course achievements, the issues that still need to be handled, and it will envisage topics and further extensions.

The proposed system is based on stereo vision cameras that provide a context management system with information related to visitors’ position and movement. Stereo vision cameras need to be installed in one or a small number of places in a museum – depending on the museum layout and on the desired services. The camera-based system may complement multimedia guides equipped with inertial sensors to provide accurate tracking and localization over the entire site, both inside and outside the cameras field of view. Localization and tracking may be used to support context-aware content delivery and services, as well as visitors counting and visitors’ behavior analysis. Experimental results are presented

To be accepted by museums, landscapes and archaeological sites, technology has to win the same challenge. Is technology unobtrusive enough to avoid compromising the emotional involvement that makes a visit to a cultural site unforgettable? Can it achieve a dissemination of the information in such a way that it is understood better? And how can technology be used to increase visibility and understanding of the numerous sites that are not yet able to attract the amount of people they deserve? This paper presents the authors’ vision on these questions, reporting on the activities carried out by the “mobile and ambient systems” work group of EPOCH as part of the CIMAD project. A central part of CIMAD is the creation of services for visitors and archaeological sites as well as making parts of the overall vision a reality. The CIMAD services are based around the MobiComp context infrastructure, enabli...
