As a result, the instruments offered by technological progress are often undervalued in terms of the beneficial contribution that they can provide to the comprehension, preservation and enhancement of architecture. In the case study of the Church of SS Bartholomew and Stephen in Bergamo, 3D laser scanning combined with traditional techniques of investigation and diagnosis has allowed achieving a new monument’s awareness, under the morphological and constructive point of views. In particular, it has helped the understanding of the precarious conditions of stability of the roofing. In addition to a widespread state of degradation and failure of some timber elements, the roof presents problems related to the linking between the individual components of the first and second array...

This twofold recognition allows making the essential breakthrough for the planning of a conscious restoration project that will so find on it, a solid support on which to unfold and develop. This identification is a multi-faceted process that can today take advantage of digital technologies. These instruments - if properly selected and managed - can facilitate an indepth investigation, stimulating new considerations and inspiring new fields to explore. This work, based on a careful "reading" of the edifice and its environment, made by int...

Based on a careful survey, operated through the integration of traditional and innovative techniques, for the first time has been elaborated an accurate plan of the citadel. The drawing of the city has allowed to read its multifaceted richness and to formulate a project ''authentically of restoration" outlining the steps needed to conserve the structures ''as found" but avoiding their collapse.

In 1949, this settlement was unearthed, but despite some actions carried out for its safeguarding and for improving its accessibility, it has not yet received the right attention and appreciation. This study has allowed reflecting both upon new approaches to the issue of the restoration and promotion of rock-cut sites and, at the same time, the possibilities of protection and valorization of the delicate archaeological grave goods there discovered. The main purpose is that of understanding the complexity of this particular architectural natural and human site, its cultural peculiarities and criticalities, in order to establish the most appr...
La Villa Romana del Casale di Piazza Armerina: il ruolo del rilievo nell’evoluzione dei processi di conoscenza e comunicazione di un sito culturale di eccezione

In particular, World Heritage sites are outstanding example among the countless testimonies of the past and may constitute a source of inspiration for building or strengthening the sense of identity of local communities of which they are a concrete manifestation. Based on some experiences conducted on both the Villa Romana del Casale and the historic center of Piazza Armerina, this work focuses on the role of survey, seen as a valuable tool for the understanding and transmission to future generations of genius loci.

The highest level of the urban territory, has for centuries hosted a dense set of architectural and archaeological strata: the so-called citadel of Lombardy. Although once its first nucleus, the site is today completely detached from the urban setting. Restoration carried out in the past have made difficult the understanding of the historical evolution of the monument which appears characterized by a great stratigraphic complexity. Starting from an in-deep archival analysis and from an accurate and all- comprehensive geometric survey (never realized before), this study intends to lay the foundations for its conservation and a sustainable re-connection with the city.

This work, based on a careful "reading" of the edifice and its environment, made by integrating archival and documentary analysis and different survey methods, aims at suggesting the proper interventions to conserve and enhance the design process developed by the author. It, also, intends to contribute to the definition of a new approach to the museum visitor experiences through multimedia. Conceived as a vital center for research and cultural promotion, the museum, thanks to virtual reality technologies, can today found new capabilities, although keeping its original spirit.

Keeping the Equilibrium: The Static Aspects of the Restoration Project. The Case Study of the Mother Church of San Cataldo (Sicily)

Established in an area characterized by a geological heterogeneity it was over time subjected to restoration work that caused additional elements of weakness. The study carried by the authors of this paper has allowed experimenting the use of 3D laser scanning to support the analysis of decays and structural damages of this monumental masonry construction, combined and integrated with the essential historical research and the visual observation. The precise identification of building diseases and especially of the causes that determine their occurrence is an inevitable prerequisite for the definition of restoration work targeted and mutually cooperating to the preservation of cultural heritage for the sake of future generations.

The project is due to Antonio Maria Caneva, a cultured and multifaceted figure, connoisseur of the golden ratio and expert in the use of perspective, to which is perhaps due the will to connect the building’s design to a strict re-spect of proportions. New surveys and diagnostic investigation, carried out both using traditional methods and modern technologies of 3D laser scanning, have attempted to address the lack of documentary material and, at the same time, to initiate a process of interpretation aimed at im-proving the geometrical knowledge of the mo-nument, also in view of establish the now urgent interventions of conservation.

These considerations are related to the transformations induced by 19th-century plan of Catania’s street leveling and focus on their impact on the Santissima Trinità monastery: a typical case of architectural and constructive transformation with repercussions on general seismic behavior. At the beginning of the 19th century, even in Catania, as in many other European cities, an urban redevelopment process in favor of public health started. It led to reorganize the road network, through many building alterations. The analysis of this plan and the observation of its effect on the monastery, led to suppose a seismic damage scenario and to design an intervention project to reduce the risks that it might actually take action.
