Informal workers in Thailand lack employee status as defined under the Labor Protection Act (LPA)... more Informal workers in Thailand lack employee status as defined under the Labor Protection Act (LPA). Typically, they do not work at an employer’s premise; they work at home and may be self-employed or temporary workers. They account for 62.6 percent of the Thai workforce and have a workplace accident rate ten times higher than formal workers. Most Thai Labor laws apply only to formal workers, but some protect informal workers in the domestic, home work, and agricultural sec-tors. Laws that protect informal workers lack practical enforcement mechanisms and are generally ineffective because informal workers lack employment contracts and awareness of their legal rights. Thai social security laws fail to provide informal workers with treatment of work-related accidents, diseases, and injuries; unemploy-ment and retirement insurance; and workers ’ compensation. The article summarizes the differences in protections available for formal and informal sector workers and measures needed to decr...

Based on a cross sectional descriptive study, 112 of 141 the self-administered questionnaires (79.4%) were returned to the researcher. The results showed that most of the nurses had a good work ability (62.5%), very good work ability (13.4%), medium work ability (23.2%), and poor work ability (0.8%). The significantly associated factor for general characteristics with work ability was age (p<0.05). The ergonomic risk factors which covered working characteristics, working posture, physical working environment, and psychological factors were revealed to be significantly associated with work ability ( p<0.05 ). The results showed the relationship between ergonomic and work ability after using stepwise multiple regression ana...

Hand muscle strength was measured by assessing hand grip strength (HGS) and pinch strength (PS) while hand dexterity was measured by the maximum tapping ability in 10 seconds (MTA). The participants were asked to perform the tests at (1) initial time at 08.00 a.m., (2) before morning rest break at 10.00 a.m., (3) after morning rest break at 10.10 a.m., (4) before lunch at 12.00 a.m., (5) after lunch at 13.00 p.m., (6) before afternoon rest break at 15.00 p.m., (7) after afternoon rest break at 15.10 p.m. and (8) end of work at 17.00 p.m.. In contrast, the control office worker group was measured only at before work (08.00 a.m.). The result showed that the HGS, PS and MTA of the dominant hand were generally stronger than those of the non-dominant hand (p-value <0.05). Several pairs of raw data of t...

Research design and methods Using a stratified, multistage sampling design, data from a nationally representative sample of 37,138 individuals aged ≥ 15 years was collected using questionnaires, physical examination and blood samples. Results Prevalence of diabetes and IFG weighted to the national 2004 population was 6.7% (6.0% in men and 7.4% in women) and 12.5% (14.7% in men and 10.4% in women), respectively. Diabetes was more common in urban compared to rural men but otherwise prevalence was relatively uniform across geographical regions. More than half of those with diabetes had not been previously diagnosed, although the majority of those diagnosed were treated with oral anti-glycemics or insulin. Prev...

Related data were collected and analyzed by using descriptive statistics. The results showed that the completeness of report was at 95.05%. However, there was still some incompleted topics such as hazards identification, composition or information on ingredients, toxicological information, transport information and other information in the chemical safety data sheet. As a result, Pathumthani Welfare and Labor Protection Office was unable to completely record data into the database system. Therefore, responsible agencies should improve the reporting system by developing a hazardous chemical report program for each industrial plant’s representatives to be able to fully record the details of their hazardous chemicals, and be able to keep their confidential data by themselves. In addi...

Support measures to improve night and shift work conditions in Thailand: a case study in a glass factory

A multinational, glass-manufacturing factory employing 1,500 workers was selected as the research site. Three shift systems in three teams were adopted. A direct observation study and a fatigue feeling monitoring study were carried out to compare the differences between different shifts. A 10-day time-budget study was conducted for 30 shift workers to know their work and sleep patterns. The direct observation study identified safety and health risks during the night work periods. The risks included insufficient lighting, height gaps on the floor, excessive exposure to heat, inappropriate workstations, and sleepiness and fatigue feelings among shift workers. Working consecutive double shifts and overtime work was often seen. An advisory meeting was held based on the study findings to assist managers and worke...

The subjects ofthis study consisted of 61 traffic policemen and 24 office workers as controls. The MTBE inairborne was measured throughout the work with a diffusion passive monitor attached on thebreathing zone of each subject. The urine and the blood samples were taken after the work. TheMTBE in airborne was analyzed by gas chromatography equipped with FID and the biological(blood and urine) samples were done by one with headspace. The geometric mean of MTBEin airborne was 33.0 ppb among the traffic policemen and significantly higher than one amongthe controls (21.1 ppb). In addition, this study showed that the traffic policemen had significantlyhigher concentrations of MTBE in blood than the controls. The subjects had little knowledgeabout the hazard of exposure to MTBE. From these results, we can emphasize that trafficpolicemen are exposed to MTBE and they should get occupational health education and usesuitable personal protective equipment. Key words: Methyl tertiary-butyl ether (MTBE), Biological Monitoring, Traffic policemen

The study instruments were the occupational health and safety management audit (OHSM Audit) and Satisfaction of students, teachers and school personnel with occupational health and safety management questionnaire in school. The data was collected before and after implementation of a safety management intervention program in the school. It was found that after implementation of the safety management intervention program, there were many changes in four parts of OHSM Audit, (1) policy and management, (2) hazard and accidents control, (3) investigation, analysis, and report of accidents and (4) evaluation and monitoring of safety management. The score of Nongkratum School was 10.90 before implementation of the safety management intervention program out of the total of 100 which ...

A cross-sectional study was conducted in four asbestos cement roof factories. Both area and personal air samples were collected and analyzed employing NIOSH method # 7400 and counting rule A for all procesess and activities. The time weight average exposures were calculated for each studied task using average area concentrations of the mill and personal concentrations. Then, cumulative exposures were estimated based on the past nation-wide air sampling concentrations and those from the present study. The relative risk (RR) of lung cancer among asbestos cement sheet workers was calculated and the number of asbestos related lung cancer case was estimated. The roof fitting polishers had the highest exposure to airborne asbestos fiber (0.73 fiber/ml). The highest average area concentration wa...

Five older (38.4 +/- 1.82) and five younger (21.4 +/- 0.55) female workers voluntarily participated in this study. All participants worked both morning and night shifts at a glass manufacturing factory. Saliva was collected every three hours at the workplace and at the subjects' houses to examine melatonin profiles. The Mann-Whitney U test and the Wilcoxon signed ranks test were used. There was a significant (p < 0.05) difference between melatonin levels in younger and older subjects when measured during the night shift at 19:00. Differences between melatonin levels during the morning and night shifts in the older group were significant at 07:00 and at 19:00 in younger subjects (p < 0.05). Normal stress and mild stress were found. No significant differences in melatonin levels were found between workers with normal and mild stress levels. The ons...
