Objective: To determine the association between the risk of suicidality with self-harm, sociodemographic parameters (that is, gender and type of school), psychosocial variables, and social and family support in Chilean adolescents. Methods: In a cross-sectional study, 829 (377, 45.5% girls) children/adolescents between 10 and 19 years of age participated. Suicidality, self-esteem, health-related quality of life (HRQoL), and social support perception were evaluated by standard, validated questionnaires. The presence of self-harm, dating violence, and family dysfunction was also evaluated through a self-report survey. Results: Suicidality risk was related to low self-esteem (OR = 9.73; 95%; CI = 6.62-14.28; p < 0.001), low HRQoL (OR = 5.0; 95%; CI = 3.51-7.13; p < 0.001), low social support (OR; 3.38, 95%; CI; 2.48-4.6; p < 0.001), and self-harm (OR = 8.03; 95%; CI = 5.69-11.33; p < 0.001). In family terms, suicidality risk was associated with exposure to physical (OR = 2.47, 95%CI; 1.69-3.6; p < 0.001) and psychological (OR = 1.78, 95; 1.33-2.39; p < 0.001) aggression between parents, and with considering their family dysfunctional (OR = 2.41 95%; CI = 1.69-3.41; p < 0.001). Finally, suicidality was associated with feeling mistreated by a boyfriend/girlfriend (OR = 2.18; 95% CI = 1.19-3.98; p = 0.011). Conclusion: Suicidality was associated with self-harm, low social, psychological and family well-being, and/or feeling mistreated by a boyfriend/girlfriend.

This concept has influenced a progressive process of understanding health in a subjective way, not only considered as a "state" or a "functional capacity" of patients (biomedical model), but also as the patients' perception and the personal representation of the disease (bio-psycho-social model) . Thus, in 1995 the Group of the World Health Organization dealing with the QOL (WHOQOL) developed a definition of HRQOL. Since then it has been considered as a multidimensional construct that includes the patient's perception and the different levels of his life (physical, emotional, interpersonal, etc.); this new model emphasizes the dynamic temporal dimension (depending on age, patient's life stage and phase of the disease), and stresses the importance of cultural factors in a subjective process of self-evaluation. Furthermore, this concept implies the presence of positive aspects (quality) in people's life and not only the absence of negative ones. As a consequence, it breaks with the former ideology of intervening only in case of troubles while it embraces a preventive principle: it justifies intervention before problems are present (Casas, 2000). At the same time, in the 80s some publications about children HRQOL (CHRQOL) appeared in literature, although in smaller proportion than in studies related to adult population . Until recently, children were considered patients without power. In the research field, the younger they were, the more the researchers relied on their parents into account (Andelman et al., 1999). Moreover, Frisén (2007) considered not to evaluate adolescents with the same parameters used for adults. In the specific case of adolescence, HRQOL study has to include such aspects as physical maturation and body image, peer relationships, intimacy, sexuality and autonomy. However, in the past the concepts of HRQOL and CHRQOL were criticized for the lack of a clear, robust, consensus-based theoretical framework , for confusing the QoL just with health , and for the lack of definitions as these concepts were considered "self-evident" (Andelman et al., 1999). Nowadays, despite these limitations, the above stated concepts seem very important as they underline the emergence of the bio-psycho-social paradigm into the health field. It expresses a huge epistemological shift: it is a systemic model, which integrates bio-physiological systems with mental levels. According to this model, the disease arises as an interference in the systems' interaction while a single system may not be considered responsible for it. . Considering the widespread debate and its interdisciplinary aspects, the authors intend to investigate some psychological dimensions, choosing three main concepts correlated with adolescent HRQOL: body image, stress and family. Body image is considered relevant when a body falls ill. At the beginning, body image was only studied by neurologists in cases of brain damages, then, neurologist Paul Schilder widened the perspective through psychoanalysis and sociology.

In this article we present the adaptation and validation of Parent Development Interview-Revised (PDI-R) to the Spanish and Catalan languages. It was performed by a cross-sectional design with a non-clinical sample of 61 Spanish and Catalan speaking mothers of under five mentally healthy children. The same sample responded to an Adult Attachment Questionnaire and to the Child Behavior Check List. The construct hypothesis based on attachment theory and mentalization research, expected a positive correlation between the parental RF level and adult attachment. Other hypothesis did not predict significant differences in the results of the two subsamples depending on sociodemographic characteristics. The results do confirm the hypothesis considered in a concordance way with the literature. The discussion provides some qualitative analysis closer to what is expected of the PDI-R's clinical uses as a frame to work with parents. This study represents the PDI-R's introduction in the Spanish and Catalan speaking population over the world. We think it opens the door to further research assessing the parental RF with Spanish speaking parents' samples as well as to guide the clinical work with them.

However, there is not enough to enable us to understand the feelings and bonds of the often complex life situations of being an internationally adopted child. This qualitative study with Nepalese child adoptees in Spain explores their inner world with projective methods. The results show that assessment with projective methods reveals dynamics and feelings experienced by adopted children. This can be a useful tool to better understand their psychological needs and properly design professional interventions.

It examines if parental divorce is associated with the presence of DFP in the young adults’ family of origin and if the presence of DFP explains the association between parental divorce and lower levels of connectedness between offspring and fathers. A sample of 501 Spanish young adults (20–31 years old) answered the Spanish version of the YAGISS questionnaire (Pérez-Testor et al., 2008). Results showed that each DFP was associated with individuation in a different way. Parental divorce predicts the presence of all DFP and only parental pressure and feeling deprived explain the association between parental divorce and connectedness with father. Results varied as a function of the gender of parents and offspring. Implications for practice are discussed.

A Battery for the Assessment of Young Spanish Adults

In Spain there is a lack of instruments to assess parent-child relationships in these terms. The present study examines the psychometric properties of a battery to assess individuation with mother, individuation with father, and the existence of dysfunctional family patterns (DFP) in 535 young Spanish adults (20–31 years). Items from the Munich Individuation Test of Adolescence ( Walper, 1998 ), the Network of Relationships Inventory ( Furman & Buhrmester, 1985 ), the Filial Responsibility Scale ( Jurkovic & Thirkield, 1999 ), and the Feeling Caught Between Parents and Parental Pressure scales ( Walper & Schwarz, 2001 ) have been used. The initial structure obtained through exploratory factor analysis underwent a confirmatory factor analysis. The results hint at a model adjusted to the data which guarantees the construct validity of the proposed structure. Internal consistencies for scales and subscales were acceptable to excellent, with α ranging from .62 to .91. Different indices of concurrent validity were also analyzed. The results generally support the reliability and validity of the new instrument. Limitations are discussed.

Psychometric Properties of the Spanish Short Version of the Inventory of Personality Organization (IPO-18) in a Nonclinical Sample

The IPO is used to depict personality structure types, using three scales: psychological defense mechanisms, degree of identity integration and reality testing. The review of the literature suggests alternatively factorial solutions. Accordingly, this study, using a nonclinical sample (N = 315), tested the fit of several factorial models (2- and 3- factor solution) via the maximum likelihood approach. Confirmatory Factor Analysis revealed a better fit for the 2-factor solution (CFI = .97, TLI = .96, RMSEA = .037, AIC = 311.06), in accordance with Kernberg’s theory. Each of the 2 IPO subscales shows good levels of internal consistency, and they are associated with increased negative affect, aggressive dyscontrol as well as depression, anxiety and general level of psychopathological distress in line with theoretical expectations. Our results suggest that the Spanish short version of the IPO is a reliable and valid tool for the assessment of personality organization following Kernberg’s model.
