At a time when interfaith dialogue among Muslims and their Abrahamic counterparts is takng place ... more At a time when interfaith dialogue among Muslims and their Abrahamic counterparts is takng place in the academy and in communties around the globe with increased frequency and efficacy, violent intrareligious conflcts among Muslims are taking place in alarmingly stark contrast to the Qur'anic statement: This Ummah is a single Ummah and I am your Lord, so worship Me garnering little, if any interest. Whle the notion of a culture of peace and its terminology were developed within the contect of secular, international peacemaking and development, the main focus of this paper is the exploration of ts application to the internal conflicts within Islam that shatter the concept and real life experence of a single Ummah, i.e., whether nonviolence an peacebuilding as Islamic values set forth in the Qur'an and Hadith, and found in the historically lived nonviolent resistance of Prophet Muhammad, along with contemporary peacebuilding among Muslims. An essential aspect of this exploration is the significant inclusion of the gender dynamic in global peacemaking and of gender justice as a critical component in the development of an Islamic culture of peace. Finally, this paper identifies the "indigenous/immigrant" Muslim divide in America as a case study in which the often contentious terminology and its historical underpinnings are examined and clarified, and offers a practical programmic approach to peacebuilding among this cohort that invites both further study and empirical exploration.

It postulates that El Fadl has developed distinct patterns of discourse that form a methodology he consistently and effectively employs to advance his theological and legal arguments.
