Two of them: vaccaroside D (4) and dianchinenoside B (5) are known, but not previously reported for S. officinalis, and seven others: saponarioside C (6), D (7), F (8), G (9), I (10), K (11), and L (12) have been previously isolated from this plant. Horizontal fragmentation in distributed object database systems

Object-Oriented Database Management Systems (OODBMS) are becoming popular and are being used in a... more Object-Oriented Database Management Systems (OODBMS) are becoming popular and are being used in a large number of application domains, many of which are inherently distributed. Optimal application performance of a distributed object-oriented database system requires class fragmentation and the development of allocation schemes to place fragments at distributed sites in order to minimize data transfer. Our approach is top-down, and the entity of fragmentation is the class. Fragmentation algorithms have been proposed for the relational model, but the object model is relatively untouched. In this paper, we present an algorithm for horizontal fragmentation in a model consisting of complex attributes and simple methods. This type of fragmentation facilitates query decomposition, optimization, and parallel treatment for distributed OODBMS.

A Multi-Source Information System (MSIS), has been designed for the Renal Epidemiology and Inform... more A Multi-Source Information System (MSIS), has been designed for the Renal Epidemiology and Information Network (REIN) dedicated to End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). MSIS aims at providing reliable follow-up data for ESRD patients. It is based on an n-tier architecture, made out of a universal client, a dynamic Web server connected to a production database and to a data warehouse. MSIS is operational since 2002 and progressively deployed in 9 regions in France. It includes 11,500 patients. MSIS facilitates documenting medical events which occur during the course of ESRD patient' health care and provides means to control the quality of each patient's record and reconstruct the patient trajectory of care. Consolidated data are made available to a data warehouse and to a geographic information system for analysis and data representation in support of public-health decision making.

The genus Agave (Agavaceae), includes more than 300 species; around 16 of them show an homogeneou... more The genus Agave (Agavaceae), includes more than 300 species; around 16 of them show an homogeneous distribution throughout Cuba. Agave brittoniana (ssp. brachypus), is an endemic subspecies that grows in the central region of the country and its leaves are traditionally used in the treatment of parasitic diseases. The parasite Trichomonas vaginalis causes the disease known as trichomoniasis, that infects the genital tract. To test in vitro the plant against Trichomona vaginalis, the dried and powdered leaves were extracted three times with ethanol-water (7:3) by maceration at room temperature. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure and the extract was suspended in distilled water, defatted with n-hexane, and extracted with water-saturated n-butanol. After solvent removal, a portion of the n-butanol extract was hydrolyzed.
