Background: The FDI World Dental Federation is engaged in a global consultation process to assess... more Background: The FDI World Dental Federation is engaged in a global consultation process to assess the potential challenges and impacts of the introduction of a preventive model to existing systems for caries management. Objectives: The aims of this study were to evaluate the quality of dental disease data collected with the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS) index and dentists' perceptions with regard to the collection of data using the 'European Global Oral Health Indicators Development' (EGOHID) survey methods, and to estimate the mean time required for completion of the dental records according to the practitioners' perceptions. Materials and method: The data – 2877 clinical examinations and 2877 individual assessments – were collected in 2008 using a network of 146 sentinel dentists in eight European countries. A clinical survey was completed for each participant and the dentist gave a detailed assessment of each patient investigated. Results: This study shows that practitioners' perceptions have an impact on the mean time required to complete the dental record. Mistakes originate from dentists' attempts to simplify the completion of many boxes. This results in a larger number of missing data than of error codes. These missing data have an effect on the time required for information collection. Conclusion: The quality of the data collected will allow the establishment of recommendations based on this method.

Objective: This study aimed to establish a correlation between the dental caries prevalence measu... more Objective: This study aimed to establish a correlation between the dental caries prevalence measured with the DMFT and ICDAS indexes and the rate of fluorine content in drinking water. Materials and methods: A national dental caries prevalence data measured with ICDAS and DMFT indexes at several thresholds were correlated with the fluoride content of drinking water in several regions of Senegal. The dental caries prevalence was calculated based, distinctively, on the DMFT and ICDAS criteria. The variation of the rate of fluorine content in the drinking water of different regions was calculated according to the WHO reference rate. Conclusion: This study has provided with significant information on using DMFT vs ICDAS. It would be shown that a correlation could be made between the degree of dental fluorosis and the dental caries prevalence measured with the ICDAS. Results: When the DMFT index is used, the dental caries prevalence correlates with the rate of fluor content in drinking water. But, when dental caries prevalence is measured with ICDAS, our results show that the rate of fluorine contained in drinking water does not affect the decayed teeth prevalence.
The validity of the apical palpation test in the diagnosis of acute apical abscess was evaluated ... more The validity of the apical palpation test in the diagnosis of acute apical abscess was evaluated on 74 patients attending the clinic of Conservative Dentistry of the Department of Odontology of Dakar. These patients had spontaneous acute pain, exacerbated by percussion and pulpal necrosis of the causal tooth. The intensity of spontaneous pain, pain after percussion and/or apical palpation was recorded. The causal tooth was then evaluated for the presence or absence of exudation. Any statistically significant difference has been demonstrated between the intensity of spontaneous pain, intensity of pain after percussion and the presence or absence of purulent exudate during endodontic drainage.

The microtensile bond strength of five self-etch adhesives systems, including one two-step and four one-step self-etch adhesives to dentin, was measured. Human third molars had their superficial dentin surface exposed, after which a standardized smear layer was produced using a medium-grit diamond bur. The selected adhesives were applied according to their respective manufacturer's instructions for μTBS measurement after storage in water at 37°C for 24 h. The μTBS varied from 11.1 to 44.3 MPa; the highest bond strength was obtained with the two-step self-etch adhesive Clearfil SE Bond and the lowest with the one-step self-etch adhesive Adper Prompt L-Pop. Materials and Methods: This study is a follow-up of a recent study that investigated the 1-week bonding effectiveness of feldspathic ceramic blocks luted to dentin using the same composite cements and experimental protocol. The microtensile bond strength (μTBS) of different composite cements, including two etch-and-rinse cements (Calibra, Dentsply; Variolink II, Ivoclar-Vivadent), two self-etch cements (Panavia F2.0, Kuraray; Clearfil Esthetic Cement, Kuraray), and four self-adhesive cements (Unicem, 3M ESPE; Maxcem, Kerr; Monocem, Shofu; G-Cem, GC), was measured using a standardized μTBS protocol after 6-month water storage. As control, a two-step self-etch adhesive (Clearfil SE, Kuraray) combined with a microhybrid restorative composite (Clearfil AP-X, Kuraray) was used. Twenty-seven human third molars were used with specific preparation, and after 6-month water storage, microspecimens were prepared and subjected to a μTBS test. Results: The mean μTBS varied from 0 to 26.1 MPa, the latter being measured for the control adhesive composite combination. All specimens prepared using the self-adhesive composite cements Maxcem and Monocem failed during specimen processing. Most specimens failed at the dentin-cement interface, except the self-etch composite cement Panavia F2.0 that failed in 53% of the cases at the cement-ceramic interface and the control of which all specimens failed in the resin part of the microspecimens. Conclusion: The largely varying bonding effectiveness recorded for the different composite cements highlights the need for material specifications. Such specifications should also include a bond durability test as the specimens in the present study that were subjected to 6-month water storage. To lute ceramic restorations that allow light transmission to a sufficient degree, a conventional light-curable adhesive and composite should be considered.

This study evaluated the one-year clinical performance of a one-step, self-etch adhesive (Optibon... more This study evaluated the one-year clinical performance of a one-step, self-etch adhesive (Optibond All-in-One, Kerr, CA, USA) combined with a composite (Herculite XRV Ultra, Kerr Hawe, CA, USA) to restore NCCLs with or without prior acid etching. Restorations performed by the same practitioner were evaluated at baseline and after 3, 6, and 12 months using modified USPHS criteria. At 6 months, the recall rate was 100%. The retention rate was 84.2% for restorations with prior acid etching, but statistically significant differences were observed between baseline and 6 months. Without acid etching, the retention rate was 77%, and no statistically significant difference was noted between 3 and 6 months. Marginal integrity (93.7% with and 87.7% without acid etching) and discoloration (95.3% with and 92.9% without acid etching) were scored as Alpha or Bravo, with better results after acid etching.
