Evaluación De La Productividad Primaria Neta Arbórea Potencial y La Arquitectura Vegetal Para Una Mejor Producción Caprina en El Departamento De Piura

Marketing and processing of small ruminants in highland Balochistan, Pakistan. Small Rumin. Res.,... more Marketing and processing of small ruminants in highland Balochistan, Pakistan. Small Rumin. Res., Most small ruminants in highland Balochistan are produced under transhumant and nomadic pastoralist systems. This study investigated the livestock and meat marketing practices in this area through interviews with producers, village dealers, wholesalers, commission agents, butchers and consumers. It was confir:aaed that producers had little knowledge about market forces and quality of livestock, and this limiled their ability to increase income. However, they incorporated liveweight in their perception of livestock price per unit of weight. The average weight of sheep was 26.4 kg and for goat 21.8 kg, with estimated farm-gate prices of Rs 512 and Rs 480 (US$ 23.50 and 22.00, respectively). Average prices paid by the consumers were Rs 750 (US$ 34.40) for sheep and Rs 682 (US$ 31.30) for goat. Correspondingly, services of intermediaries in the marketing chain represented 32% and 30%, respectively, of the price paid by consumers. Meat grading was absent but there was government regulation of retail prices. Consumers did not have ways to convey their degree of dissatisfaction to producers th:7ough intermediaries in the marketing chain. Most services could be improved for the benefit of consumers and producers: overall volume of the market could be higher, the quality of the meat could be more uniform and some marketing costs could be decreased.

The results of a survey of highland farmersindicatethat theyownon average 5' 2 camels, the majorityofwhichareof working age. Camelsare a major financial asset for farmers and 57 percent of farmers/herders expect to be using such animal draft power in 10 years time. Camels are valued for their versatility of agricultural use and are particularly preferredovertractorsfor sowing operations. In casesofanimalsicknessfarmers areusuallydependenton homeremediesasveterinarians are not easily available. * Single copies of all lCARDA publications quotedin this papermaybe obtained on request, withoutcharge from lCARDA, P.O. Forward stochastic dynamic programming was used to compare livestock management decisions made under assumptions of risk. This comparison determines when a stochastic system can properly be managed as a deterministic system; that is, when the certainty equivalence property holds. Low forage quality and animal growth with constant or decreasing prices near the end of the grazing season favored early scale of cattle. Sale dates regulated of the standing crop of vegetation left at the end of the grazing season. Fluctuations in rainfall did not change the optimal decisions at low initial stocking rates. However, at high initial stocking rates the optimal strategies using deterministic and stochastic models were different during the last half of the grazing season. Therefore, risk was greater for high initial stocking rates than for low initial stocking rates. Risk was less for flexible marketing dates. A substantial portion of livestock production of the world takes place on rangelands with arid or semi-arid climates. These climates have large rainfall fluctuations that influence forage production and the decisions to be made with regard to livestock production. Medium-and long-term risk in forage production has been studied by , , among others. Less attention has been paid to short-term decisions that take place within a grazing season. These decisions are related to two fundamental issues in range science: (a) optimal stocking rate (area per animal per unit of time); and (b) vegetation remaining at the

The theoretical analysis develops an integrated trade-migration model and shows that NAFTA and U.S. subsidies exacerbate the illegal labor flow and increase U.S. exports. The theoretical analysis is empirically implemented by simultaneous estimation and simulation analysis. The analysis shows that NAFTA increased the number of undocumented workers to U.S. agriculture and U.S. farm exports to Mexico by an average of 1573 and $6.82 billion, respectively. U.S. farm subsidy reduction decreases unauthorized entry marginally and U.S. farm exports by an average of $3.2 billion.
