The internet and social media are vital modes of connectivity and essential pillars of our lives today. However, as of January 2020, only 48.4% of the global women* population had internet access and in developing markets this share was 40.7%. The situation is even more alarming in India where less than 30% of the total internet users are women. Worryingly, even after overcoming the issue of access, women who do use the internet and social media platforms are subject to a significant amount of abuse. This report outlines the magnitude of problem and the manner in which it manifests, while examining the efficacy of actions taken by governments and social media companies to address it.
