There are innumerable prototypes and even commercial models that reveal the ability to handle the difficulties posed by the sea and obtain electrical energy. However, the implementation of these projects has shown that wave energy is not an easy resource to manipulate. In the economic aspect, the main barriers are given by the high cost of technologies in the prototype phase, as well as their operations. Regarding the technological barriers, the main ones correspond to the technological risk of the prototypes in the testing phase and the lack of specialized human capital that allows the industry to be implemented at a local level. Even so, the inventiveness and initiative of some allow them to work and face adversity with a clear objective: to take advantage of the wave power potential. In the present investigation, an exhaustive study is carried out on wave energy, its current development, techniques and technologies for its exploitation, environmental impacts, and advantages and disadvantages of the use of this renewable energy.

The objective of this work was to determine the N and P loads in 12 hydrographic basins that flow into estuaries along the northeastern coast of Brazil using established methods. Additionally, natural and anthropogenic loads trends in the hydrographic basins of 12 tropical rivers in northeastern Brazil over 27 years (1990-2016) were evaluated. The results indicated an annual average increase of +1.1% in population density, while precipitation showed no significant trend. The anthropogenic loads were 21 and 112 times higher than natural inputs for N and P, respectively. Anthropogenic sources accounted for ~ 96% of all contributions. The positive trends of these loads (mainly wastewater) represented an annual average increase of 1.1% for N and 1.2% for P, for all river basins included in this study. These percentages represent average annual loads o...

The data of the parameters of the sea states were obtained from the outputs of the WAVEWATCH III model, in the 2000-2018 period, available in the database of the United States' National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The analysis of extreme meteorological events affecting the western and eastern regions showed that the former is more likely to be affected by such phenomena. Despite the limitations imposed by the resolution of the grid used, it was found that the wave potential in the seas adjacent to Cuba is generally limited, and there are usable wave power density levels only at the western and eastern ends of the island.

The datasets were created in NetCDF format conserving their original horizontal resolutions of 1.0, 0.5, 0.26, 0.08333 and 0.04 degrees in gridded structure; only the WAVEWATCH3 dataset has a non-uniform step in latitude and longitude. This internal data structure facilitates its handling due to a wide diversity of existent freeware ...

These anomalies are very useful for chemical oceanographers and marine biologists who need to analyze data and trends in tropical regions to carry out the analysis of variations in nutrient and chlorophyll concentrations, behavior of changes in primary productivity and trends in ocean acidification.<br>

The scenarios were created in the waters adjacent to the Brazilian NE, with simulation times of thirty days, every 3 hours in the most representative months of each season of the year. The numerical simulations were focused to characterize the oil drift, taking 3 starting points located at (30°W, 6°S), (30°W, 7°S) and (30°W, 8°S). As initial and boundary conditions the surface currents of the HYCOM (global domain 3-hourly and 1/12 degree analysis) hydrodynamic model were used and for the spill a light crude oil of 35 API (849 kg m-3) and initial volumes of 3145 bb (500 m3) were considered. As main results, it was found that the spills located at point 1 had the fastest drifts and in many cases the slick continued to t...

The PETROMAR-3D oil drift forecast lagrangian model is used for this exercise. The trajectory of the spill and its fate to the coast are analyzed through winter and cyclonic seasons scenarios respectively, in addition a spill of an extreme event scenario (Hurricane Irma) is simulated. A new approach is introduced, based on the direction of slick movement in the first 24 hours, for the analysis of the relationship between the trajectories and the fate of hydrocarbon slicks to the coasts.

That is why this work determines the influence of the NAO on the main hydrometeorological events that affected Cuba in the 1999–2016 period. To comply with this, a regression analysis is carried out in the CurveExpert software where the combined influence of the NAO and El Niño-Southern Oscillation on hydrometeorological events is also examined. It was found that the NAO exerts a greater influence on Cuba when it is in its negative phase during the winter season.
