economy for decades. Earning foreign currencies valid for
international trade is compulsory to realize strategic imports of
the nation. Countries can be advantageous or disadvantageous in
marketing certain commodities according to comparative
advantages theory. Some countries have advantages based on
their natural resources (gas, oil, mines etc.) while others sell
competitive industrial products or services with high added
values. Marketing competitive products to global markets allow
countries to increase foreign currency reserves and decrease the
need for external credits. In Turkiye, tourism and export have
been given pioneer roles since 1980s in order to sustain foreign
trade balance. Despite all progress, tourism revenues and average
tourist expenditure are below the desired levels. In this study, two
main axes are assessed as foreign currency generator domains in
Turkiye as foreseen in 12th Development Plan. Firstly, paper will
discuss the need to shift from mass tourism to more profitable
alternative tourism types in Turkiye. Secondly, cultural (creative)
industries have gained importance as they develop together with
tourism. Digitalization, globalization, increased international
mobility and service sector all contributed to the appearance of
cultural industries. Turkiye’s potentials and in particular Didim
tourism destination’s choices will be assessed with qualitative
inquiry and literature review. Main purposes of the study are; to
underline higher level of foreign currency generating tourism
types and cultural industries.
