Professor (Dr.) R.K. Saket (Member’12–Senior Member'18, IEEE) is a Professor with the Department of Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University) Varanasi (UP), India. Previously, he was a faculty member at Government Engineering College, Rewa (MP) India; Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani (Rajasthan), India; Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture, Technology and Sciences, Allahabad (UP), India, and University Institute of Technology, Rajiv Gandhi University of Technology, Bhopal (MP), India. He has provided his industrial services to Electrical Safety Division of the M.P. Electricity Board, Government of Madhya Pradesh, Ujjain Division (MP) India as an Electrical Safety Engineer. He has more than twenty years of academic, industrial and research experience. He is the author / co-author of 6 national / international patents, approximately 150 scientific articles, book chapters and research papers in indexed international journals and prestigious conference proceedings. He has supervised 12 Ph.D. research scholars and 50 M. Tech. students. He has delivered many technical talks and honored as a resource person of the power system reliability engineering. He has delivered his academic and research lecture(s) at World Academy of Science, Engineering & Technology, Paris (France) on September 21-23, 2014; International Theravada University, Yangon (Myanmar) on December 02-04, 2014; Thammasat University, Bangkok (Thailand) on January 21-23, 2017; and Tokyo City University, Tokyo (Japan) on March 09-11, 2018. His research interests include reliability engineering, electrical machines & drives, power system reliability, reliability enhancement of industrial components & systems, and reliability aspects in renewable energy systems.
Professor Saket is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers (India), Senior Member of IEEE (USA), Member of IET (UK), and a Life Member of the Indian Society for Technical Education, New Delhi (India). He is an Associate Editor of the IET Renewable Power Generation (UK), IET Electrical Systems in Transportation (USA) and IEEE Access (USA). He is an Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Electrical Systems (France), and Engineering, Technology and Applied Science Research (Greece). He has received many awards, honors, and recognitions for his excellent academic and research contributions including the prestigious Gandhian Young Technological Innovation Award–2018 appreciated by the Hon’ble President of India at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi, India; Design Impact Award–2018 appreciated by Padma Vibhushan Ratan Tata at Mumbai, India, and Nehru Encouragement Award- 1988 & 1990 awarded by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of M.P. State Government, Bhopal, India.

Hybrid Deep Neural Network-Based Generation Rescheduling for Congestion Mitigation in Spot Power Market

In the open-access power market environment, the continuously varying loading and accommodation o... more In the open-access power market environment, the continuously varying loading and accommodation of various bilateral and multilateral transactions, sometimes leads to congestion, which is not desirable. In a day ahead or spot power market, generation rescheduling (GR) is one of the most prominent techniques to be adopted by the system operator (SO) to release congestion. In this paper, a novel hybrid Deep Neural Network (NN) is developed for projecting rescheduled generation dispatches at all the generators. The proposed hybrid Deep Neural Network is a cascaded combination of modified backpropagation (BP) algorithm based ANN as screening module and Deep NN as GR module. The screening module segregates the congested and non-congested loading scenarios resulting due to bilateral/multilateral transactions, efficiently and accurately. However, the GR module projects the re-scheduled active power dispatches at all the generating units at minimum congestion cost for all unseen congested loading scenarios instantly. The present approach provides a ready/instantaneous solution to manage congestion in a spot power market. During the training, the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) is evaluated and minimized. The effectiveness of the proposed method has been demonstrated on the IEEE 30-bus system. The maximum error incurred during the testing phase is found 1.191% which is within the acceptable accuracy limits. The salient features of a Novel Dual Rotor Sandwich Stator Fusion Magnetic Pole Six Phase Permane... more The salient features of a Novel Dual Rotor Sandwich Stator Fusion Magnetic Pole Six Phase Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (NDRSSFMPSP-PMSG) for Geothermal Energy Extraction have been highlighted in the research paper. The energy retained inside the outer layer of the earth which is then transported to the surface by steam or liquids is commonly referred to as geothermal power. In Geothermal Power Plants (GPPs), synchronous generators are commonly installed. However, it seems that using a multi-phase PMSG to produce electricity from accumulated geothermal heat energy is a better alternative. The multiphase system outshines the conventional three-phase system in terms of power density, efficiency, finer torque quality, compact design, and reliability. The novelty of the machine lies in the utilization of a fusion magnetic pole which is a combination of surface mounted and hybrid delta shaped magnet. Further the use of a dual rotor-stator topology improves the power density of the machine. The Finite Element Method (FEM) is used to quantify machine parameters including the induced Electromotive Force (EMF), output strength, efficiency, total harmonic distortion (THD), and voltage regulation for the proposed generator. The analysis of the above parameters reveals that the suggested generator outperforms conventional synchronous generators and is best suited for GPPs.

This paper presents the design aspects and thermal characteristics of single-sided linear inducti... more This paper presents the design aspects and thermal characteristics of single-sided linear induction motor (SLIM) for Electromagnetic launchers. It is designed to accelerate a 50 kg mass through a distance of 3 meters within a minuscule time to an exit velocity of 50 m/s. A study of the motor's parametric variation based on the launching requirement has been performed. Its performance characteristics are obtained using 3D FEM and verified analytically using Parseval's method. The FEM, analytical and experimental verification of the thrust characteristics of different secondary conductive sheet materials namely, aluminum, Beryllium copper and German silver shows that, the latter exhibits superior characteristics than the former two, because its thrust-velocity curve is close to inverse linear relationship (stable region of operation of LIM) , which significantly reduces the accelerating time during the launch. The designed SLIM is assessed for its thermal performance with materials having temperature-dependent electrical properties by carrying out a coupled-field FEM simulation. The conclusions demonstrate that the electromagnetic and thermal assessments are in tandem with each other as required for launching. The proposed converter is operated in two different stages—step-up (motoring) and step-down (regenerative braking)—which can be employed in electric vehicle (EV) applications. The converter is operated in the continuous inductor current mode (CICM). For regenerative braking (RB) of permanent magnet brushless DC (PMBLDC) motor, the self-inductance of the motor is exploiting to step up the back electromagnetic force (EMF) of the motor to extract the energy even at low rotor speed. The design parameters of the converter are selected as battery voltage V s = 48 V , output voltage V o = 200 V , output power P o = 1 kW , and switching frequency f s = 20 kHz . Abstract This paper describes the characteristic investigation of the Novel Dual-stator V-Shape M... more Abstract This paper describes the characteristic investigation of the Novel Dual-stator V-Shape Magnetic Pole Six-Phase Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (NDSVSMPSP-PMSG) for wind power application. The proposed generator has V-shaped embedded magnetic pole in the rotor and six-phase winding in both the stator. The proposed generator has high-power density and high efficiency. For emphasizing the significance of the proposed generator, the characteristics of the NDSVSMPSP generator are analyzed and compared to one of the traditional generators, i.e., the Dual-stator Surface Mounted Six-Phase Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (DSSMSP-PMSG). For the design and characteristic investigation of both the generator, Finite Element Method (FEM) is chosen because of its high accuracy. Two modes of FEM analysis are considered, namely magneto-statics and transients. The magneto static analysis is used for the study of flux line and flux density distribution, while the transient analysis is considered for the generator’s characteristic investigation. The performance characteristics such as generated Electromotive Force (EMF) for both inner and outer stator, Percentage Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of developed voltage, Developed EMF vs rpm, terminal voltage vs. current, developed rotor torque vs time, percent (%) ripple content in torque, and percent efficiency vs current for both generators are investigated. As a result, it can be stated that the power density and reliability of the proposed generator is higher than that of the traditional generator.

The key goal of the paper is to assess the performance of a Novel Dual Stator Dual Rotor Six-Phas... more The key goal of the paper is to assess the performance of a Novel Dual Stator Dual Rotor Six-Phase U-Shaped Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (NDSDRSPUS-PMSG) that can be used in nuclear energy extraction. In nuclear power plants, synchronous generators are currently used to produce electricity. A feasible alternative is to use a compact-sized high power density Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG). The topology having two rotors-stator provides better power density, and the use of U-shape makes the magnet stronger by pointing the poles flux in the same direction. With greater torque density, higher durability, smaller size and robustness, the multiphase system surpasses the conventional 3-phase system. The output parameters like developed Electromotive Force (EMF), output power, ripple torque, losses, efficiency, total harmonic distortion (THD), and voltage regulation is calculated using Finite Element Method (FEM) for the proposed generator along with comparison with Dual Stator-Rotor Six-Phase Surface Mounted Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (DSDRSPSMPMSG). It is deduced from the comparative review that the NDSDRSPUS-PMSG outperforms the competition, making it more reliable and efficient in the long run.

Hence, the operation of system equipments becomes very close to their marginal limits that result in voltage instability problems. The locations of distributed generators (DGs) have a major effect on the distribution system voltage stability; This paper presents the effect of (DGs) capacity and location on voltage stability enhancement in distribution networks by using different optimization tools such as Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Differential Evolution (DE). The main objective is to decreases power losses in the system to enhance the voltage stability improvement. The simulations have been carried out on the IEEE 30-bus system. The performance of the proposed method introduces significant reduction in power losses and improved voltage profile of the network.

Induction generators connected to the local grid may lead to severe power quality problems such a... more Induction generators connected to the local grid may lead to severe power quality problems such as flicker, voltage dip etc. Further, unbalancing of the supply system may distort the supply voltage at the point of common coupling (PCC). The power quality and reliability issues of an induction generator for embedded generation have been analyzed in this paper. The behavior of the grid with connection/disconnection of the induction generator, variable wind speed operation, unbalancing, and harmonic injection have been simulated using MATLAB. The voltage dip transients, harmonics, voltage flicker, voltage unbalance of the supply system have been described to ascertain the impact of induction generator on reliability and power quality of the supply.
