It seeks both to ask questions and to provide direction. It revolves around five topics: Arts and Appreciation; Arts and Education; Arts Education and Cultural Diversity; Range of Research; and Reclaiming the Arts as a Building Block in Cultural Diversity for the sake of Arts Education. The growing tendency to find ‘one language’ by clarifying and defining terms and concepts is replaced here with questions. Questions as tools to serve the conceptual basis for understanding, analysng and designing ways to investigate and work with an idea. A ‘research guide’ consisting of three key questions, followed by ten questions asking what and how, is proposed here to equip its user with open options to stimulate the mind. The main effort in this chapter tends towards finding an answer to one profound question: Why is it that the arts have a major role in cultivating culture and education, a...

This study, designed as a short-term observational research project conducted over a period of five weeks, looks into the young people's production of Cymbeline, which was performed as a play within a play, with each actor creating a contemporary character as well as a Shakespeare character. The study's focal point is on the vital tension between the process and the product. The results are directly relevant to educational practice. The authors hope to generate a renewed dialogue on the significance of doing theatre projects with adolescents. At the focus are three women, today aged between 25 and 27, Liron, Yifat and Rotem, and their adolescent diaries. A model of diary catharsis is offered in order to examine the diary writing process. The methodology is qualitative and is based on aesthetic-narrative inquiry in which aesthetic content analysis was conducted on the diary texts according to the diary catharsis model. Finally, two in-depth interviews with each woman added to the understanding of the experience of diary writing from their unique perspectives. Research findings attest to fractional catharsis in adolescent diary writing and reveal its healing quality. The experience of diary writing exposes narratives which express the somatic and aesthetic experience of diary writing – loneliness, relationships with parents, sexuality, aloneness and the need to communicate with God.

It aims to observe the effects of experiential learning using Playback Theatre on the professional behavior of community nurses and on the process of acquiring professional knowledge, both during and following the training course. The construction of nursing knowledge, which here takes place through the playback theatre method, adheres to events garnered from the nurses' practical experiences. The method is based on processes that link the clinical experience with the theoretical knowledge, while developing insights about the professional behaviors that are "acted out." This article examines school plays not from the perspective of "how to". Rather, it focuses on the conceptual level: exploring the role of the play in the school environment where culture is created. The issues of the culture of the school and the problem of change are central to this study. They are analyzed through a metaphoric view and personal experiences. This approach enables us to critically explore the theatrical work at schools in order to enhance its quality and find ways towards transforming the school play to a form of school art.

It is an intriguing rainbow of thought, celebrating a journey across three fi elds of scholarship: theatre, education and modes of knowing. Hitherto no other collection of key concepts has been published in theatre /drama education. Fifty seven entries, written by sixty scholars from across the world aim to convey the zeitgeist of the fi eld. The book’s key innovation lies in its method of writing, through collaborative networking, an open peer-review process, and meaning-making involving all contributors. Within the framework of key-concept entries, readers will fi nd valuable judgments and the viewpoints of researchers from North and South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, New Zealand and Australia. The volume clearly shows that drama/theatre educators and researchers have created a language, with its own grammar and lucid syntax. The concepts outlined convey the current knowledge of scholars, highlighting what they consider signifi cant. Entries cover interdependent topics on teaching and learning, aesthetics and ethics, curricula and history, culture and community, various populations and their needs, theatre for young people, digital technology, narrative and pedagogy, research methods, Shakespeare and Brecht, other various modes of theatre and the education of theatre teachers. It aims to serve as the standard reference book for theatre/drama education researchers, policymakers, practitioners and students around the world. A basic companion for researchers, students, and teachers, this sourcebook outlines the key concepts that make the fi eld prominent in the sphere of Arts Education.
