The fourteenth century was a period of demographic crises following the devastating effects of the Black Death. At the same time, the longest spell presently known when the gap between rich and poor turned in the opposite direction was the post-Black-Death century. This panel will investigate material responses to the ever-present human crisis of mortality heightened by awareness of this new deadly epidemic. The objects of artistic expressions and quest for everlasting memory before neighbours and God have been almost totally lost. However, through wide-ranging documentary evidence including testaments, inventories, account books, the papers in this panel reconstruct the social and cultural responses to the changing socio-economic circumstances as expressed through objects and material culture. This panel will present the first key findings resulting from the five-year UKRI project “Art and Inequality in shadow of the Black Death”, which investigates social and economic inequalities through material and visual culture.
