This thesis examines the Master-Slave Dialectic, gives an exegesis of and interprets the Dialecti... more This thesis examines the Master-Slave Dialectic, gives an exegesis of and interprets the Dialectic and relevant sections therein. I first argue that what occurs in the Master-Slave Dialectic is a paradigmatic example of Hegel's view of the dialectical shifts, and that these dialectical shifts can be read as changes in identity. I then examine critiques of Hegel's views on identity and respond through the lenses of terror of death, anxiety, and work.
