Abstract

The growth of democracy in Indonesia from 1999 to 2019 was significantly hampered by Islamic populist forces, conservatives, and politicians who discriminated against women. This article aims to explore the challenges facing Indonesian political democracy after the 2014 and 2019 elections, using qualitative methods and interviews with party officials. The study uses the theories of Islamic populism, conservation, and discrimination against women. The article finds that the most dangerous challenges include the presence of populist and conservative Islamic forces that use religious sentiment in elections, political party elites that use women as men's political friends, and women seen as a threat to male politicians. This article emphasizes the importance of considering factors outside the electoral political process, such as religious beliefs and understanding, especially in the Indonesian context.

Abstract

The proliferation of hadith dissemination on Instagram, a popular social media platform, presents a compelling avenue for exploration. This phenomenon has engendered increasingly intricate and dynamic models and characteristics of hadith disseminators. However, this development has received inadequate attention in scholarly discourse, often being overlooked. This study not only addresses the shortcomings of previous research but also delves into the question of how hadith dissemination on Instagram can shape the models and characteristics of hadith disseminators to become more contextually relevant and adaptable. To address this inquiry, this study employs a qualitative descriptive approach to examine the models and characteristics of hadith disseminators prevalent in the #hadith hashtag on Instagram. The findings not only reveal that hadith dissemination on Instagram has transcended virtual-based communication and interaction patterns but also underscore the construction of a more contextual and dynamic model and characteristics of hadith dissemination. This study additionally emphasizes the value of interviewing Instagram users to gain a more comprehensive and reflective understanding of this phenomenon.

Abstract

With the increasing irresponsible exploitation of natural resources, environmental damage has become increasingly concerning, particularly in the mining sector, which has a broad impact on ecosystems and the livelihoods of surrounding communities. The environmental crisis caused by mining activities in Indonesia demands a new approach to more sustainable resource management. This study aims to explore the role of religious moderation from the perspective of eco-theology, which has the potential to offer solutions for natural resource management. Eco-theology provides spiritual principles that can be integrated into environmental policies, creating a balance between economic interests, ecology, and societal well-being. This research is a literature review employing a descriptive analysis method. The results show that eco-theology offers a relevant framework for shifting the paradigm of mining management from anthropocentrism to ecocentrism. Religious organizations have great potential to promote sustainable mining management by incorporating spiritual values into environmental practices. Religious moderation serves as a foundational pillar in strengthening ecological awareness, improving the relationship between humans and nature, and encouraging sustainable development aligned with religious principles.

Abstract

Tulak Breuh is a customary practice related to Islamic law and theology in the social life of the Acehnese people. This article discusses the discourse on fidyah of prayer in fiqh, the practice of the tulak breuh tradition, and the analysis of law theology on the practice of tulak breuh tradition. The methods of study combine library research and field research simultaneously. Data collection techniques were conducted through interviews and literature studies. From the results of research conducted, it is found that there are two opinions of ulema regarding the fidyah of prayer. The first is the Hanafi madhab and some of the Shafi'iyah ulema who allow the practice of fidyah of prayer. The second is Maliki, Hanbali, and Shafi'i madhab (a strong mu'tamad) do not allow the practice of fidyah of prayer. The opinion that allows fidyah of prayer is based on the qiyas of the existence of fidyah for people who leave fasting and the fact that everyone must have left his prayer during his lifetime. Meanwhile, those who claim there is no fidyah for prayer are due to the strict prohibition against leaving prayer and there is unacceptable for a Muslim to leave a prayer. A special team, who is intentionally invited to pay fidyah when someone dies, organizes the implementation of tulak breuh tradition. The implementation of tulak breuh is done by handing over the amount of rice in turn as a substitute for the missed prayers by the deceased. However, theologically, the tulak breuh tradition can have implications for the emergence of a permissive attitude towards prayer as one of the pillars of Islam. Because this tradition provides opportunities and concerns, a lay believer can quickly leave prayer because he is sure that his heirs will redeem his missed prayers with fidyah when he dies.

Abstract

The almighty Allah (SWT) has created all living beings, humans, birds, animals and insects.  He is who strongly asks people to treat animals with compassion and not to abuse them which are worthy of consideration and respect. In Sri Lanka, varying concepts are followed among different communities: Buddhists and Hindus consider slaughtering quadrupeds as a cruel act. Meanwhile, Muslims consider the similar act as a divine obligation (Qurbani and Uluhiyya). This study compares the Animal Welfare Bill, initiated by the Commission of Law of Sri Lanka on 2006, with the tenets of Islamic Law (Shariah) through a review of literature and thematic content analysis to identify areas where the right of the animal is violated. According to Animal Welfare Bill of 2006, these areas refer to the slaughter of animals for meals, transport of animals, use of live animals for scientific purposes, and cruelty relating to animals. These identified areas coincide with the identified areas espoused by the Prophet Mohamed (PBUH), and a solution produced to prevent such violation with the instruction of almighty Allah around 1400 years ago.

Abstract

This article examines the ontological foundations of philosophical posthumanism and critically examines its central claims through the lens of contemporary Muslim thought. Rooted in postmodern critiques of Enlightenment humanism, posthumanism challenges conventional ideas of human identity, agency, and moral status by emphasizing hybridity, technological mediation, and the interconnectedness of all forms of life—including animals, machines, and ecosystems. Through conceptual analysis and comparative hermeneutics, the study contrasts these claims with key Islamic metaphysical concepts such as fitrah (innate nature), ruh (soul), and khalifah (vicegerency). Prominent Muslim thinkers, including Seyyed Hossein Nasr, Taha Abdurrahman, Osman Bakar, and Fazlur Rahman, argue that posthumanist ontology undermines the sacred status of the human being, potentially leading to spiritual alienation by denying transcendence and moral responsibility. While acknowledging the ethical and ecological contributions of posthumanism, the paper contends that its core assumptions remain incompatible with the Islamic worldview, which affirms human dignity, metaphysical purpose, and divinely ordained responsibility within the cosmos.

Abstract

Madrasah institutions are often perceived to lag behind state education, yet they possess unique characteristics that foster religious knowledge and ethical development in students. The “Washoya Al-Abaa’ lil Abnaa’” book serves as an essential teaching resource aimed at improving student ethics within the Islamic educational framework. This study aims to explore the implementation of the Washoya book and its impact on enhancing student ethics at Madrasah Ittihadzul Mudzakkirin. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through interviews and documentation from teachers, students, and the community. The findings reveal that the Washoya book promotes good behavior among students, demonstrating significant ethical improvement both within the madrasah and the wider community. Supporting factors include strong collaboration among educators and guidance from leadership, while inhibiting factors arise primarily from influences outside the learning environment. Community feedback underscores the effectiveness of these ethical teachings, suggesting that students are adopting better practices influenced by the book’s content. This research contributes to the understanding of ethical education in Islamic institutions and highlights the importance of ongoing development in the study of the Washoya book.

Abstract

Madurese’s resistance to the development of tourism facilities is based on the socio-cultural conditions of the community, which is less open to modernization. This research describes the form of resistance and reflects on its relation to Madurese society’s social and historical conditions. This research uses qualitative data with interview methods, collecting news on the internet, and literature studies. Data collection in this research begins with reading news on the internet on Madurese's resistance related to modern facilities and modern tourism, then conducting interviews with informants to confirm data from the news. Data analysis was carried out through three stages, namely describing data, classifying, and interpreting data thematically to reveal the meaning of the resistance by the Madurese community against the development of tourism facilities. The findings of this study highlight at least three main things, namely the forced closure of non-Muslim entertainment venues due to dissatisfaction with the resulting value shifts. Second, the presence of powerful actors triggers resistance from the community. Third, Madurese people tend to make tourism based on Islamic Sharia as they believe in their daily lives.

Abstract

Freedom of religion is a fundamental principle in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). However, some international human rights activists argue that Islam does not emphasize religious freedom. Despite this claim, historical accounts indicate that the prophetic tradition ensured religious freedom. While various studies have explored apostasy, they often overlook the perceptions of both Muslims and non-Muslims. Sri Lanka is a diverse country with multiple ethnic and religious groups and has experienced significant clashes over the years. Recognizing differences in views on apostasy among Muslims, this study examines their perceptions regarding religious conversion and its consequences in relation to Islamic legal norms derived from the Quran, Sunnah, and existing literature. The study focuses on the Kurunegala district, a region with a large pluralistic society. Using the Krejcie and Morgan sample selection table, 84 participants were selected, and self-administered questionnaires were used for data collection. The data were analysed using SPSS version 26. Additionally, research articles, books, and web publications were reviewed to construct a conceptual framework. The findings reveal that 78.9% of participants agree that Islam upholds religious freedom, while 16.1% disagree. A majority (78.5%) are unaware that Islam does not criminalize conversion under coercion, which contradicts Islamic teachings. Furthermore, 62.8% believe that individuals who convert from Islam to another religion should be punished, even if they do not harm the Muslim community. This study highlights the need to address misconceptions about apostasy among Sri Lankan Muslims, particularly in the Kurunegala district. It aims to contribute to strategies for reducing these perceptions and promoting a clearer understanding of Islamic teachings on religious freedom.
