Abstract

Ethnic rivalry triggers competition among individuals, certain actors, and groups. Often, the competition is due to political factors while religion becomes a structural legitimacy. This paper examined how the rivalry between Malay and Dayak in West Kalimantan affected certain groups’ identity. The data of this paper were obtained through a documentation study by reviewing publications and writings on the issue of rivalry and interviews with some figures in West Kalimantan. The result concluded that the rivalry between Malay and Dayak in West Kalimantan was tight due to political factors. The two equally dominant communities have long competed since the colonial period in West Kalimantan. Today's rivalry has taken place since Indonesia's reformation in 1998 and let both groups maintain their identity, and, in some cases, lead to unclear boundaries. They do not live as neighbors but brothers. However, religion remain an essential factor amid the situation and cause the rivalry stronger.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the role of religion and education in maintaining inter-ethnic harmony in Sanggau, West Kalimantan, Indonesia. Sanggau, with its ethnic diversity including Malays, Dayaks, Chinese and others, provides a rich context for understanding how inter-group harmony can be maintained through religious and educational interventions. This study uses qualitative methods, including in-depth interviews with religious leaders, community leaders and teacher, as well as observation and documentation of religious, educational and social activities in Sanggau. The data is then recorded and assigned a code. It is subsequently grouped according to broader categories, with reference to the purpose of the research. The relationship between the themes within the data is then narrated in order to facilitate the construction of research conclusions. These conclusions are then associated with the results of previous studies and relevant theories. The findings of this study indicate that small-scale conflicts over religious issues are common in the Sanggau. The conflict arose because of the multi-religious and multi-ethnic situation. Conflicts arose over the construction of places of worship, religious changes and interfaith marriages. However, these conflicts have been resolved through ethno-religious and educational approaches. Group identity is used to strengthen the bonds of fraternity, as expressed in the phrase "kita menyadi’ (we are brothers)". A shared identity is built on the traces of origin, history and the values of local wisdom that are inherited. Local initiatives have also emerged to promote ingroup cooperation through religion and education, successfully cultivating the values of tolerance as the key to maintaining harmony. Religious approaches have given way to ethnic approaches, and education has been part of strengthening narratives of togetherness and peace. Joint religious activities, such as the celebration of religious holidays and inclusive education programmes involving students from different ethnic backgrounds, have proven effective in strengthening solidarity and mutual understanding.

Abstract

Perang Ketupat is a unique tradition of the Malay Tayan community in West Kalimantan, representing efforts to preserve cultural identity amidst social plurality. This study aims to explore the role of the Perang Ketupat tradition as a mechanism for strengthening cultural identity and fostering social integration in an increasingly diverse society. Employing a qualitative-descriptive approach, data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews with local community leaders and cultural figures, and a review of relevant documents on the tradition. The findings reveal that Perang Ketupat serves as a dialectical space between local customs and external cultural influences, fostering communal solidarity that enhances social cohesion. The tradition also acts as a means of affirming the cultural identity of the Malay Tayan community while promoting harmonious cross-cultural interactions with other groups in the region. However, modernization poses challenges, particularly in maintaining the essence of the tradition amidst shifting social values. Therefore, collaboration among local communities, government entities, and other social actors is crucial to ensure the sustainability of this tradition as a dynamic cultural heritage.

Abstract

This research aims to explore pluralism in West Kalimantan, a paradoxical place in Indonesia, where multi-religious and multi-ethnic people meet. For social researchers, this situation is unique because, on the one hand, West Kalimantan is known as a conflict-prone area in Indonesia. On the other hand, part of its territory, namely the Singkawang area, is called the most tolerant area. Previous researchers assumed this situation was false because conflicts between religious and ethnic groups still occur frequently. However, the communication strategies and social interactions by ethnic groups in this area have rarely been investigated. The role of the Chinese Muslim group is significant in bringing about harmonization between the polarised groups. Chinese Muslims have provided a link that is socially very instrumental in deconstructing the firm ethnic and religious group identities and boundaries. Although they seem to form their own identity, two sides of that identity are related to religious groups and ethnic groups. Their presence thus balances inter-group communications and interactions. In conclusion, theoretically, the presence of the Chinese Muslim community in West Kalimantan breaks the ice of identity and becomes a bridge of communication between communities.

Abstract

This article analyzes the integration of Islamic law and customary law in shaping the religious identity of the Malay Buyan community in Kapuas Hulu, West Kalimantan, Indonesia. While Islamic law plays a central role in regulating social and religious life, local customary law remains deeply embedded in the community’s legal consciousness and socio-cultural framework. Previous studies have often treated these two legal systems as separate or even contradictory. However, this study challenges such a dichotomous perspective by demonstrating that Islamic law and customary law engage in an ongoing process of negotiation, resulting in an adaptive and contextually dynamic legal framework. Using a socio-legal approach, this research collects data through in-depth interviews with ten key informants, participant observation, and document analysis. The findings reveal that Islamic law does not replace customary law but is instead integrated into the local legal system, influencing various aspects of social order, family structures, and the sustainable management of natural resources. This integration is evident in the use of Islamic legal terminology, the substance of legal norms, the mechanisms for customary fines, and the role of Islamic religious leaders in the codification of customary law. These findings challenge the prevailing bipolar view that positions Islamic law and customary law as inherently opposing systems. Instead, this study highlights a dynamic and integrative interaction between the two legal traditions, ensuring both social harmony and legal continuity. Ultimately, the article argues that the coexistence of Islamic and customary law is not a source of conflict but a mutually reinforcing and evolving process that contributes to strengthening both religious and cultural identity in a predominantly Muslim society.
