Although gamified instruction is being widely adopted, there needs to be compelling research that supports gamification as an effective educational modality. Without this support, gamification is just a novelty. This chapter explores research that provides evidence to support the appropriacy of gamified learning as a modality that more closely adheres to how the human brain functions. It explores suggestions from Mind, Brain, and Education Sciences and NeuroELT to set a standard for what is good education. Using these suggestions as a basis to evaluate gamified instruction, it looks at recent studies to determine if gamified instruction is a brain-friendlier mode of instruction than traditional models.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the benefits of learning with mobile technology for ... more The purpose of this study was to investigate the benefits of learning with mobile technology for TESOL students and to explore their perceptions of learning with this type of technology. The study provided valuable insights on how students perceive and adapt to learning with mobile technology for effective learning experiences for both students and teachers. The authors conducted a convergent mixed methods design to achieve the research objectives. Three critical and practical recommendations for effective mobile learning experiences were scrutinized for design and implementation of Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL): effective instructional strategies, training or professional workshop development, and ongoing technical support and assistance.

Children born to Limited English Proficient (LEP) caregivers experience high risks of mortality a... more Children born to Limited English Proficient (LEP) caregivers experience high risks of mortality and have difficulty obtaining specialty care. English and health literacy programs tailored to caregivers are rare. This study developed tailored English instruction to assist native Spanish speaking LEP caregivers to more fully integrate into their children's healthcare teams. We implemented a thorough needs assessment leading to a six-module tailored English intervention with five LEP caregivers. Pre/post analyses were conducted to measure effect of interventions on healthcare literacy, confidence, and integration into the healthcare team. All subjects showed improvement from pre to post tests of English language use and health literacy while qualitative data showed increases in confidence and integration into healthcare teams. In hospital, English language interventions can improve LEP caregiver participation in their children's healthcare team and improve language and health literacy skills, but feasibility concerns of providing these programs remain.
