PHILIP RANCE has taught ancient and medieval history and/or Greek language and literature at universities in the United Kingdom, Germany and Belgium. He has been a visiting scholar at universities in Heidelberg (2005-6), Thessaloniki (2011-12) and Berlin (2016-19, 2024-), and has been awarded senior research fellowships at universities and research institutes in Munich (2009-11), Istanbul (2013-14), Berlin (2015), Wolfenbüttel (2016), Gotha/Erfurt (2017) and Sofia (2019-).
His research interests include late Roman and Byzantine history, historiography and literature; warfare and martial culture; Byzantine codicology and book culture; history of libraries; the manuscript transmission and reception of Greco-Roman technical and scientific literature; Byzantine Greek philology; Vulgar and Late Latin.
