Heroes of Might and Magic III: Horn of the Abyss (abbreviated as HotA)[1] is an unofficial non-commercial mod for Heroes of Might and Magic III, known as one of the largest expansions for the game, still being updated after more than 20 years from the release of the original game.[2][3][1] It adds three new town types, a large number of new map items, new playable campaigns, a graphical random map generator template editor, among other improvements and features.[4][5] The modification is sometimes considered to be "almost canon".[6] It was announced in 2008 and released on December 31, 2011.

Gameplay

[edit]

The mod introduces many quality of life and balance changes to the original version, new artifacts, map objects, campaigns, terrains and mechanics like unit stacking or negative luck.[7] One of the most major changes are new towns: Cove, a pirate-themed faction, Factory, a steampunk-themed faction, and Bulwark, centred around the themes of northern cultures like Nordic, Celtic or Siberian.[8][9][10] The expansion also includes multiplayer, together with simultaneous turns feature, not presented in the original game.[11]

Factions from HotA are also used in the official board game by Ubisoft, dedicated to Heroes 3.[12] On April 21, 2026, Ubisoft announced a new town from fan-made expansion coming to the board game - The Forge, which will also be released in the video game version of Horn of the Abyss. The town possesses a futuristic aesthetic, and was originally planned to be released in Heroes of Might and Magic III: Armageddon's Blade, but received lots of hate from the fans of the game and was scrapped.[13] The team of HotA cooperated with one of the designers of the original Forge town, and currently hoping for the successful realisation and reception of the idea.[12]

Reception

[edit]

The modification is known for its high-quality content, containing the feel of the original 'all-time classics' game, evoking a feeling of nostalgia.[7] Reviewers noted that the Heroes 3 is "in its best shape ever" mainly due to the efforts of enthusiasts of HotA. Other expansions for Heroes 3 like "In the Wake of Gods" are considered by reviewers significantly worse in quality than Horn of the Abyss.[1]
