馬 小剛（ば しょうごう、マー・シャオガン、英名：マーシャル・マー〈Marshall Ma〉、1980年生まれ）は、アメリカ合衆国アイダホ大学（UI）のデータサイエンスおよび地球情報科学の研究者である。UIのコンピュータサイエンス学科の教授を務め、地球・空間科学学科および同大学の複数の研究所・センターにも所属している。[1]

幼少期と学歴

馬小剛は中国中部の内陸部にある天門市（湖北省）で生まれた。2000年代初頭に中国地質大学 (武漢)で学部・大学院課程を修了した。2007年にオランダのITCへ渡り、当初はユトレヒト大学に所属し、その後トゥウェンテ大学に移って博士課程の研究を行った。[2] 2011年、博士論文「Ontology Spectrum for Geological Data Interoperability」により、トゥウェンテ大学から地球システム科学およびGIScience分野の博士号を取得した。[2] 2012年初頭、アルフレッド・P・スローン財団（Sloan Foundation）およびアメリカ国立科学財団（NSF）の資金援助を受け、レンセラー工科大学（RPI）のTetherless World Constellationにポスドク研究員として参加した。[3] RPIではデータサイエンス手法およびセマンティック技術の集中的な訓練を受け、複数の研究プロジェクトに参加・主導した。[4] 2014年、馬小剛はRPIの准研究科学者（Associate Research Scientist）に昇進した。[5]

経歴

馬小剛の研究は、データサイエンスを促進するためのサイバーインフラエコシステムにおける手法や構成要素の整備という課題に取り組んでいる。RPIでは、米国地球変動研究プログラムの地球変動情報システム（Global Change Information System）[6][7]におけるオントロジー開発のリーダーを担い、アルフレッド・P・スローン財団が資金援助するDeep Carbon Observatory（深部炭素観測所）のデータサイエンス活動にも携わった。[8] またRPIでは、地球環境科学部においてデータ分析の講義も担当した。[9]

2016年、馬小剛はアイダホ大学（UI）コンピュータサイエンス学科に着任した。UIではデータサイエンスと地球情報科学の研究を継続し、知識グラフ、オープンデータ、時空間解析アルゴリズムなどに取り組むとともに、データサイエンスとオープンデータに関する複数の新科目を開設した。2016年から2017年にかけて、馬小剛はMILES（Managing Idaho's Landscapes for Ecosystem Services）プロジェクト[10]の協力研究者としてサイバーインフラ開発に貢献した。2018年には米国セマンティック技術シンポジウム（U.S. Semantic Technologies Symposium、US2TS）を共同設立し、アメリカ国立科学財団（NSF）、アルフレッド・P・スローン財団、およびエルゼビアのArtificial Intelligenceジャーナルからスポンサーを受けた。[11] 2017年以降、馬小剛は深時代（deep-time）データサイエンスに精力的に取り組み、アメリカ国立科学財団（NSF）およびNASAが資金援助する複数のプロジェクトに携わった。その中には、世界最大の鉱物データベースであるMindat.orgのデータをオープンアクセスで提供するOpenMindatプロジェクトも含まれる。[12][13] また、Deep-Time Data Infrastructure（深時代データインフラ）、[14] Deep-time Data Driven Discoveries、[15] およびIUGS Deep-time Digital Earth[16]といったコミュニティプログラムや取り組みにも積極的に参加している。2020年から2021年にかけて、馬小剛は米国4大学の研究者チームを率い、アメリカ国立科学財団（NSF）から多額の助成金を獲得して、気候変動・生態学・生物学・社会経済学・公衆衛生の横断的なデータサイエンス研究を実施した。[17]

馬小剛はApplied Computing & Geosciences誌の共同編集長[18]を務めるほか、Computers & Geosciences、Data Science Journal、Earth Science Informatics、Big Earth Dataなど複数の学術誌で編集委員または編集ボード委員を担っている。2023年以降は、Earth Science Information Partners（ESIP、地球科学情報パートナー）のセマンティック技術委員会の委員長を務めている。[19] また、国際数理地球科学学会（IAMG）の選出評議員（2016〜2020年）および受賞委員会委員長（2019〜2025年）、[20]アメリカ地質学会（GSA）地球情報科学・データサイエンス部門委員長、CODATA傘下の科学連合間データ標準調整タスクグループ委員長、[21][22]そしてNASA惑星データエコシステム独立審査委員会の委員を歴任した。[23] また、アメリカ地球物理学連合（AGU）、Research Data Alliance（研究データ連盟）、国際地質科学連合（IUGS）地球科学情報の管理・応用委員会など、複数のデータサイエンスおよび地球情報科学のコミュニティにも積極的に参加している。
