Rave culture typically centres around: raves and clubs (events where dance music is played by DJs and occasionally live performers), record labels, radio and pirate radio stations, and DJs, MCs, and artists/producers.

The genres of electronic dance music that have been prevalent in the United Kingdom since the late 1980s and that have been played at raves include house, acid house, trance, techno, breakbeat hardcore, jungle, drum and bass, happy hardcore, UK garage, dubstep and grime.
