New book on DOS
[edit source]Hi there, 'good to find you here !
I stumbled across a PDF book for which i haven't yet located an HTML version, so i figured i'd bring it in one of the Wikimedia projects, and this site seems like the correct choice (I hardly ever find myself here, but looking around just now, it looks pretty good, i should come here more often). Another reason why i'm searching to add it around here is that its punctuation is a bit annoying at times, and some overdone sentences could use simplification, so i'd give it a copyedit too. To sum this up : internal links for navigation, and a more fluent text.
The book in question is First steps towards system programming under MS-DOS 7, which i found there. I also see a version at Scribd, but in the same format, and you have to have an account there to be able to read it. The copyright license at the header of the book seems to satisfy the requirements stated at WB:COPY.
Should the import of this book happen, there are embedded screenshots to extract from the PDF document. Finding out how to extract those would take me some research, but perhaps you already know, or know someone who does ? (To find those illustrations, search for "fig. " in the text.)
BTW i haven't yet found how to start a page in this wiki which does not seem configured quite the same as the other ones that i'm used to: Wikipedia, Wiktionary (where we've previously "met"), and Wikisource. WB:NEW seems to skip over that detail. At those other projects, i type in the future title of the page to be created and hit search, it doesn't find it and offers me to create it (red link). Here, the search results don't seem to make that offer.
Would you be willing to look into that, and perhaps help me start the base work, so that i can edit it ? I envision just one long page with the chapters as sections, as contrasts with a separate subpage for each chapter, but perhaps that is not the acceptable format around here ?
Merci d'avance, et à bientôt —Jerome Charles Potts (discuss • contribs) 06:06, 10 February 2018 (UTC)
- Hello, basically commons:Commons:Tools doesn't provide anything to convert a PDF in wikicode, so this should be a manual operation.
- A long book without any subpage is admissible, but it will be classified in the maintenance with {{split}}.
- The absence of red link in the researches came from MediaWiki:Searchmenu-new, but I've just improved it as you've suggested.
- Best regards. JackPotte (discuss • contribs) 07:22, 10 February 2018 (UTC)

Flagging my article
[edit source]Hey, you flagged my first article, 9-1 Physics with "Was this page created by accident or as a test?". I am not entirely familiar with all of the rules for wikipedia contributions (especially on wikibooks) but I intend to write (fairly actively) on this project. Please could you remove the banner?
I hope we can resolve this. - Neutrinopenguin 19:29, 31/03/2018
- @Neutrinopenguin: hello, the only reason why I've put this flag is because the current content of it does not constitute an exploitable book. You can replace it by {{stub}} for example, but as long as it's indexed in the search engine, while it's not really worth been read, a maintenance banner should warn the visitors. JackPotte (discuss • contribs) 18:41, 31 March 2018 (UTC)
- @JackPotte:
I'm very sorry but I don't understand what you mean. What do you mean by a stub? (Sorry) but could you please help me? (Please bare in mind I am very new to wikipedia and wikibooks)Okay I understand perfectly, just read up about it. Will do. Thanks for the help. - Neutrinopenguin 19:43, 31/03/2018

[edit source]I started a new book on skunks but you deleted it why? I want to help make it grow.
--Arabia619 (discuss • contribs) 19:58, 7 April 2018 (UTC)
- According to Wikibooks:Deletion_policy#Speedy_deletions. Actually, we can't index pages like that in our search engine: this would hide the real books:
This book is all about skunks. They are black and white and have a foul odor.

deletion of pantaxerca userpage and use discussion page
[edit source]Hi @JackPotte: My name is Greg - I'm an instructor working on a class project for University of Stirling. I've been alerted to the deletion of the above user page (pantaxerca), This is a student who is working on the class project, and has an extension on the project which is time-limited. Could you please reinstate the user page and notify us both? With thanks GregXenon01 (discuss • contribs) 13:58, 9 April 2018 (UTC)
- @GregXenon01, JackPotte: Hi. I've tentatively restored the page, as it looks reasonably harmless to me. Hope that's okay, JackPotte; don't mean to step on any toes. --Pi zero (discuss • contribs) 14:28, 9 April 2018 (UTC)
- Yes, I apologize for the inconvenience. JackPotte (discuss • contribs) 14:50, 9 April 2018 (UTC)
- Don't be sorry, it's a copyright violation which is why it was deleted. It's a relatively common problem with class projects - I usually have to put an edit notice on the new books warning them of the consequences of ignoring copyright as there are so many instances of Internet "copy / paste". - @JackPotte, QuiteUnusual, Pi zero: Thanks all - I refer to my other recent comment on this. Hi,
Did you look at ZipRecruiter.com? It is a completely relevant resource to the other resources listed. Can you please assist me in adding it? Thank you~Aubrey
- @Aubreyzip: actually the site relevance is not the reason why the Wikibooks filters can't accept this link. In fact, our consensual policy, and it's the same on Wikipedia, says that the project is not financed to be a link farm like DMOZ, and we can't guaranty these sites contents by checking them regularly, this is more like the Google job.
- Concerning the few links which were already present into Find Employment/Your Career and could have confused you, they had been posted by the book author, which is a kind of exception because we consider that he has respected the policy first so he might add a few references into his books. JackPotte (discuss • contribs) 23:15, 13 April 2018 (UTC)

However, this is an xwiki spammer regardless of whether they are a bot and this is not in-line with the project so deletion for spam still applies. Hello Jack. Around the time I started this book, you placed a "Speedy Delete" banner on the article. At the time you did this the book was just an outline. I have been working on the article for a week now, mainly extracting public domain material from National Library of Australia's TROVE. It is shaping up nicely. I was mostly working on Nauru (a former mandated territory of Australia). That material is nearing completion and I have spun it off in (to be) condensed form to Wikipedia as w:History of wireless telegraphy and broadcasting in Nauru. Would you now please remove the "Speedy Delete" banner, I don't see any point in continuing to work on the book if it can all be deleted at any time. writing a book
[edit source]Hello I was thinking about writing a book but I need someone to help me out and walk me through the process can you help me Sanezedope (discuss • contribs) 09:09, 24 June 2018 (UTC)
- Yes, I've read this three times (in Wikibooks:Reading room/Projects and Wikibooks talk:Reading room/Projects. But from my experience, it's very hard to hire a volunteer like this because every one here has already their own agenda. JackPotte (discuss • contribs) 11:37, 24 June 2018 (UTC)
- Creating a book is dead simple: go to edit your user page and type the book title you want, in double square brackets like this: [[My Book Title]] . Hit Preview, you'll see a redlink on your page that says My Book Title. Click the redlink (I generally right-click and Open in New Tab), the editor will open and you can start writing your new book in the editor. (You can also go back to your user page and cancel your edit if you want, or you can leave that link there as a link to the books you're working on.)
- You can create your table of contents the same way, by putting a bunch of entries on the page you've just created, in double square brackets like [[My Book Title/Chapter 1|Chapter 1: The Beginning]] (what's after the vertical bar us what it looks like, what's before it is where it will go to). The first time you click the link it will create the page for that chapter.
- Beyond that, I'm afraid, nobody can really help. Every book is different as to its layout, intent, and style, and only the authors of that book can really help there. Editing help is available in the editor itself, but of course that's more fine detail. And most of us on here have our own books that we're working on... Chazz (talk) 18:17, 24 June 2018 (UTC)

The purpose of this page will be to describe how to implement the algorithm RadioGatún. I could put this content on the Wikipedia, but the purpose of the Wikipedia page is to summarize the algorithm and its believed security, as per reliable sources. Over the years, deletionists have made it clear that describing a cryptographic algorithm in sufficient detail to implement it is something for Wikibooks.
My plan is to describe RadioGatun in sufficient detail to allow someone to implement it. “This is a belt. This is a mill. This is how to perform the BeltMill operation (yes, the belt is distinct from the mill in the RG spec, but my experience making multiple real world implementations is that combining the two simplifies things from both a conceptual and coding standpoint). This is how to optimize the mill for speed. This is how to map an input in to a RadioGatun 32/64 state. This is how to pull cryptographically secure pseudo-random numbers from the RG state.”
Is there any reason why this content would not be welcome in Wikibooks? Samboy (discuss • contribs) 00:14, 30 June 2018 (UTC)
- {{query}} means that the article should be developed in a book to be admissible. But if it's long enough it could be sorted in Category:One-page books.
- @Samboy: personally I think that the best would be to rename your page as a subpage of Cryptography. JackPotte (discuss • contribs) 10:12, 30 June 2018 (UTC)

CU
[edit source]I think Wikibooks needs another CU, considering that QU is busy as a steward and Xania is inactive, as it will help the community in better detecting multiple-user vandalism. Would you be ready to try for CheckUser? Leaderboard (discuss • contribs) 16:11, 23 August 2018 (UTC)
- I'm flattered that you've thought about me, but since my beginnings here in 2008, I've never seen the shade of a CU request. Apparently, there isn't any need for Wikibooks:Reading room/Check users Assistance. JackPotte (discuss • contribs) 16:59, 23 August 2018 (UTC)
- The use for CU is less about users requesting it and more of you helping the community using the tool. I cite examples of the AnoynomousJusticex socks and even the clever Physics vandalism (which I was suspicious about but was unable to act without CU proof). As for being flattered, it's simple. You are an admin who blocks users and deletes pages properly (the main use for CU), and also that there is no one else who could do it (myself and another being legally blocked, and others being inactive or unwilling). There are only two CU users, one of which is inactive, and that's another factor for this request. Leaderboard (discuss • contribs) 17:12, 23 August 2018 (UTC)

What do you think of this?
The main difference is that unlike a user merely reporting a false positive and then simply being told that they have to wait, users could propose their modification (using the same template, as sysops can see the user's proposed edit anyway) and then we could just incorporate it for them directly. It's not live yet, but I'm looking for feedback before deploying it (which would involve simply modifying the templates).

Regarding your recent deletions
[edit source]They seem to be confused students part of a class project - which is the reason why I and Pi zero held off from deleting them. Hi @Leaderboard:, JackPotte- It is indeed a class project of 150 students using Wikibook's sandboxes to eventually create a Wikibook on 'Approaches to Knowledge'. As the majority of editing is taking place in their and their seminar leader's sandboxes, it would be much appreciated if these pages are not deleted, as it causes a large hindrance to the course, which aims to be developing the student's digital and information literacy skills in the process by working together in their sandboxes. They have been discouraged to create official book pages until their chapters are complete. The content of the eventual book will be looking into Knowledge, through the lenses of Evidence, Imperialism and Truth- and will not be promotional material of any kind. Do let me know if you have nay further questions, Hannah Evans (WMUK) (discuss • contribs) 13:28, 21 November 2018 (UTC)
- @Hannah Evans (WMUK): Are there any deleted pages that you need restored? Sandbox pages aren't usually deleted anyway. Leaderboard (discuss • contribs) 13:30, 21 November 2018 (UTC)
- Might also consider making, and editing, a subpage of the user page rather than the sandbox, as some wikis autoclear sandboxes... I know the main sandbox here gets cleaned periodically. Chazz (talk) 16:51, 21 November 2018 (UTC)

Alphabet sur les transports
[edit source]Bonjour JackPotte, j'aimerais savoir si je serais autorisé à faire une version anglaise de ce petit alphabet fr:Wikijunior:Alphabet des transports. Cordialement. 135.19.242.113 (discuss) 05:04, 4 January 2019 (UTC)
Temporary account lock
[edit source]Hello JackPotte,
I locked your account for a couple of minutes after you blocked a steward and two enwiki admins. We've had a number of admin compromises over the last few months, so I wanted to confirm that you were still in control of your account and ensure that future damage could not be done.
After evaluating the evidence, it looks like you probably just miclicked some script while deleting talk pages. Please undo the blocks. Thanks, Ajraddatz (discuss • contribs) 18:37, 7 January 2019 (UTC)
