However, the treatment of derivational prefixes in Modern Greek lexicography remains unexplored. In this paper we explore how Modern Greek dictionaries handle prefixed words, focusing on the type of information included in the lexicographical entries that refer to prefixes. Specifically, we examine how prefixes are treated in two general monolingual dictionaries and in three specialized dictionaries. We conclude with suggestions regarding the information that should be included in lexicographical entries for derivational prefixes, as well as the representative presentation of prefixed words in dictionaries.

Τα αποτελέσματα της έρευνας δείχνουν ότι οι μελλοντικοί δάσκαλοι δυσκολεύονται να περιγράψουν την έννοια της όψης με όρους που αναφέρονται στα ισχύοντα εγχειρίδια γραμματικής, ενώ είναι περισσότερο εξοικειωμένοι με την παραδοσιακή μεταγλώσσα.

The term doublet is used to describe derived formations that share a common base and have the same formal make-up but differ in their derivational exponents. Although verbal doublets are quite common cross-linguistically, this topic has not been examined thoroughly. Based on our previous analysis of verbal doublets in Modern Greek, in this paper, we take a step further by examining the semantic and inflectional properties of verbs that belong to pairs which are considered synonymous. More specifically, we examine the actual use of some verbal doublets in corpora by checking their occurrences, the selectional preferences of each member of the verbal pair and we analyze the inflectional properties of each member of the verbal pair. We argue that verbs which show semantic overlap can hardly be considered absolute synonyms. A careful examination of the corpora shows that the two members of the pair usually differ in use and/or in their inflectional characteristics.

It focuses on identifying the various types of semantic categories encoded through prefixation and analyzes their overall distribution within the prefixation system. Additionally, the study examines issues related to the heterogeneity of semantic categories and the polysemy of prefixes. It also investigates the interplay between semantic and lexical categories in prefixation, focusing on the heterocategorial combinations allowed and emphasizing the key role of meaning in word formation.

Given that the use of all Greek diminutive morphemes (affixes or affixoids) is subject to selectional restrictions, it is shown that the variation found in diminutive derivational morphemes can be explained with reference to their particular restrictions and their multifunctional character. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the domain of Modern Greek diminutive morphemes can be thought of as a complex ecosystem structured around a fairly complementary distribution (rather than competition).

In this paper, we examine aspects of the polyfunctionality of verb-forming suffixes (verbalizers)... more In this paper, we examine aspects of the polyfunctionality of verb-forming suffixes (verbalizers) in Modern Greek. Specifically, we present the semantic categories of the denominal verbs which are derived by means of verb-forming suffixes, the semantic overlap between the formations and the competition between the verb-forming suffixes. It is shown that most of the verbalizers are polysemous (or polyfunctional) and seman-tically overlapping, while the resultative and the ornative meanings are the most core ones which may lead to the others. Competition is stronger in core meanings while the degree of competition is related to the polyfuctionality (polysemy) of the verbalizers. It is also observed that most of the verbalizers have specifique domains in which they are frequent (and/or productive). The same results are corroborated by the examination of verbal doublets, that is, competitive formations with common base and similar formal make-up but different degrees of semantic overlap. Verbal doublets can be a case par excellence to show the relationship between competion and polyfunctionality as verbal formations share the same base.

In Modern Greek, derivational morphology is one of the major morphological processes along with compounding and inflection. In recent years, research on derivational morphology has evolved rapidly. We present here the state-of-the-art on the recent advances in the derivational mor- phology of Modern Greek. First, we present affixational derivation by focusing on the main features of the derivational affixes used in Modern Greek and then we present the non-concatenative derivational processes. We also discuss the main theoretical issues related to derivational morphology, that is, constraints, competition and productivity of derivational patterns, and the main theoretical approaches to Modern Greek deriva- tional structures. Finally, we present some general themes of derivational morphology, including the relationship between derivation and other morphological processes and the role of derivational morphology in scientific terminology, language teaching/lexicography and psycholinguistics. We aim to contribute to better understanding of how morphology works by highlighting the potential of research on derivational morphology in Modern Greek.

Evidence comes from three Modern Greek suffixes which follow the so-called glide formation rule and carry evaluative connotation, namely-iázo,-iá and-iáris. It is shown that a) the evaluative domain is not homogeneous, since it contains prototypical and non-prototypical members, b) connotative suffixes tend to have related sound shapes, which signal their deviation from formality, and c) aspectual and quantificational suffixes seem to have expressive functions.

After an overview of the recent literature on evaluative morphology, I present an analysis of the similarities and contrasts between deverbal diminutive verbs in French and Modern Greek. It is shown that there are a lot of similarities between French and Modern Greek evaluative verbs (e.g. both French and Modern Greek verbs express various values, such as attenuation, depreciation, etc.), but at the same time, both French and Modern Greek have their own specific sub-patterns: e.g. the meaning of diminution in Modern Greek is (almost) always expressed by prefixoids and prefixes (e.g. kutso-vlepo ‘see poorly’, psefto-δjavazo ‘to study half-heartedly’), while French evaluative verbs are mainly formed by means of suffixes (e.g. boit-iller ‘to limp slightly’, march-otter ‘to...

The Interaction of Borrowing and Word Formation, 2020

The prefixes υπερ- and αντι- derive from the Ancient Greek prepositions υπέρ (‘over, beyond’) and αντί (‘in front of, instead of’), respectively, but, in the course of their grammaticalization into prefixes, they have also developed some additional non-locational meanings, e.g. ‘excess’ (υπερ-εργασία [ipererγasía] ‘overwork’), ‘against, opposing’ (αντι-αμερικανικός [andiamerikanikós] ‘anti-american’). Given the extensive use of Greek prefixes in loan translations, two questions are addressed: How does calquing influence word formation processes in contemporary Greek? And does borrowing affect the meaning of Modern Greek prefixes? It is shown that borrowing constitutes a trigger for the expansion of the domain of use and the development of polysemy in Modern Greek prefixation. Furthermore, ...

My evidence comes from the Modern Greek causative suffi x -(ι)άζω [(i)ázo], which usually carries an evaluative connotation. After a presentation of the suffi x in section 1, section 2 discusses various issues concerning the allomorphic variation of the suffi x. Section 3 describes the principal meanings of -(ι)άζω verbs. Section 4 deals with the role of the meaning of the base in the creation of the meaning. Section 5 discusses the relation between the phonetic shape of the suffi x and its evaluative meaning. In section 6, I discuss how the role of the word formation process and the rivalry with other suffi xes infl uences the meaning and the productivity of -(ι)άζω. The last section briefl y summarizes the main fi ndings of the article.
