We present a far-field optical technique allowing measurements of the dispersion relation of elec... more We present a far-field optical technique allowing measurements of the dispersion relation of electromagnetic fields propagating under the light cone in photonic nanostructures. It relies on the use of a one-dimensional grating to probe the evanescent tail of the guided field in combination with a high-numerical-aperture Fourierspace imaging setup. A high-resolution spectroscopy of the far-field emission diagram allows us to accurately and efficiently determine the dispersion curve and the group-index dispersion of planar photonic crystal waveguides operating in the slow-light regime.

Several planar photonic crystal components topology-optimized for TE-polarized light, including 6... more Several planar photonic crystal components topology-optimized for TE-polarized light, including 60 masculine bends, Y-splitters, and 90 masculine bends, have been characterized for the TM polarization. The experimental results are confirmed by finite-difference time-domain calculations. The surprising efficiency for TM-polarized light is found and paves the way for photonic crystal components suitable for both polarizations.

Efficient propagation of TM polarized light in photonic crystal components exhibiting band gaps for TE polarized light

We have investigated the properties of TM polarized light in planar photonic crystal waveguide st... more We have investigated the properties of TM polarized light in planar photonic crystal waveguide structures, which exhibit photonic band gaps for TE polarized light. Straight and bent photonic crystal waveguides and couplers have been fabricated in silicon-on-insulator material and modelled using a 3D finite-difference-time-domain method. The simulated spectra are in excellent agreement with the experimental results, which show a propagation loss as low as 2.5+/-4 dB/mm around 1525 nm and bend losses at 2.9+/-0.2 dB for TM polarized light. We demonstrate a high coupling for TM polarized light in a simple photonic crystal coupler with a size of ~ 20 m x 20 m. These promising features may open for the realization of ultra-compact photonic crystal components, which are easily integrated in optical communication networks.

Photonic crystal nanostructures for optical biosensing applications

We present the design, fabrication and optical investigation of photonic crystal (PhC) nanocavity... more We present the design, fabrication and optical investigation of photonic crystal (PhC) nanocavity drop filters for use as optical biosensors. The resonant cavity mode wavelength and Q-factor are studied as a function of the ambient refractive index and as a function of adsorbed proteins (bovine serum albumin) on the sensor surface. Experiments were performed by evanescent excitation of the cavity mode via a PhC waveguide. This in turn is coupled to a ridge waveguide that allows the introduction of a fluid flow cell on a chip. A response of ∂ /∂c = (4.54 ± 0.66) × 10 5 nm/M is measured leading to a measured detection limit as good as m = 4.0 ± 0.6 fg or m/ A = (4.9 ± 0.7) × 10 2 pg/mm 2 in the sensitive area.
