In 1986 I graduated from Ben-Gurion University of Israel with a bachelor's degree in Behavioral Sciences. I then completed hi my master's and doctoral degree at Wayne State University in Detroit. During my fourth year in the program, I completed a full-time one-year APA accredited internship at the Detroit and Ann Arbor VA Medical Centers. Upon completing his training, in 1991, I completed a one-year post-doctoral training in clinical neuropsychology at UCLA. In 1996, he returned to Israel and took a position as a lecturer in the Department of Psychology at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.Additionally, I worked at the Department of Neurosurgery at Sheba Medical Center (affiliated with Tel Aviv University), the Department of Psychiatry, and the Department of Child Rehabilitation. In this setting, I performed invasive pre-and intra-operative speech and memory evaluations in addition to standard neuropsychological assessments. I also conducted forensic evaluations. In 2004, I moved to Cleveland and took a position at Cleveland State University. In 2018, I was nominated as a fellow of the National Academy of Neuropsychology. Fellows are members of the academy who have demonstrated evidence of advancing the science and profession of clinical neuropsychology.

Methods 1675 adult volunteers (ages 18+) were recruited via Research Match. All participants were asked to indicate their mental health history and were placed into one of two groups: (1) individuals with ASC (n = 586) and (2) individuals without ASC (n = 1089). Both groups took the Ekman Friesen Picture of Facial Affect scale (POFA). The POFA scale consists of 110 grayscale photos who posed with seven facial expressions: happy, sad, angry, fearful, surprise, disgust, and neutral. Background: The threat of the potential spreading of the SARS epidemic caused significant stress ... more Background: The threat of the potential spreading of the SARS epidemic caused significant stress to many individuals from non-affected countries. In this study, we investigated whether the SARS threat affected the subjective mood and behavior of Israeli patients with schizophrenia and compared their reactions with those noted in their clinical staff. Methods: Subjects were evaluated with a specially designed questionnaire and a modified form of the Spielberger Scale for State Anxiety. Results: As compared to staff, patients had higher scores on the Modified Spielberger State Anxiety Scale. However, many responses (e.g., dysphoria) to the SARS threat did not differ from staff. Patients felt more protected by the authorities and some perceived the epidemic in a psychotic manner. Conclusions: It seems that patients attempt to reduce the effect of external stressors by living in an "autistic bubble" (in which outside threats cannot enter) or by denying the significance of these stressors and over-emphasizing the power of medical authorities to protect them. On the other hand, some patients also psychotically interpreted these stressors.

The Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT) is the one of the most widely used neuropsychologic... more The Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT) is the one of the most widely used neuropsychological tests of verbal memory. It has been translated into numerous languages including Spanish, German, Arabic, Hebrew, Czech, Portuguese, and English. The present study examined the hypothesis that the learning of word lists forms an algorithmic pattern across all cultures. To this end, a sample of 200 Arabic-speaking Omani adults between the ages of 18 and 50 years was collected. The resulting norms were then compared withexisting American and Brazilian samples. The study confirmed that the first trial on the RAVLT correlates with demographic variables, whereas the learning slope on subsequent trials is almost identical across all cultures. Based on the above finding, the slope of the verbal learning test is hypothesized to measure a psychophysiological process linked with the hippocampal formation and allows for the laying down of new memories. In contrast, the first trial of the test is amenable to more cultural, demographic, and environmental factors.

The Cleveland Adaptive Psychopathology Inventory: preliminary validity and reliability of a multi-scale personality and psychopathology questionnaire

The present study describes the development of the Cleveland Adaptive Psychopathology Inventory (... more The present study describes the development of the Cleveland Adaptive Psychopathology Inventory (CAPI), a brief multi-scale personality and psychopathology questionnaire for the screening of common mental health disorders. METHODS: The 118-item questionnaire consists of 10 clinical scales, a brief scale for the screening of substance abuse, and three scales for the assessment of response bias. A sample of 4000 volunteers with and without self-reported medical or mental health conditions was used to assess the psychometric properties of the open source measure including internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and preliminary validity analyses with diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of self-reported psychiatric diagnosis. RESULTS: Internal consistency of the subscales for the normative sample ranged from .568 to .872, with mean inter-item correlations ranging from .161 to .410. The average test-retest across all of the samples ranged from .706 to .872. Finally, sensitivity and specificity (area under the curve) for the subscales with the dependent variables being self-reported diagnosis ranged from .666 to .899. CONCLUSIONS: The preliminary results suggest that the CAPI is a useful tool for clinicians and researchers interested in screening for comorbid psychopathology in both general and clinical populations.

Objective: This retrospective study was designed to examine an embedded validity indicator for th... more Objective: This retrospective study was designed to examine an embedded validity indicator for the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning (AVLT) developed by Davis, Millis, and Axelrod (2012). Using a large clinical sample the sensitivity and specificity of this index was evaluated. Method: A sample of 420 English speaking patients with suspected dementia were examined. The patients were evaluated as part of a routine clinical neuropsychological evaluation at a major academic Midwestern Medical Center. The participants presented with either complaints of cognitive dysfunction related to memory, a change in mental status or with a psychiatric illness. The patients were divided into 5 groups based on their scores on the St. Louis University Mental Status Exam (SLUMS, Tariq et al., 2006). The retrospective collection and analysis of this archival data was approved by the Institutional Review Board. The sensitivity and specificity of the AVLT embedded index were examined using XLSTAT Version 2013.1.02 Life Module. Results: This study provides the cumulative percentage of index scores for the 5 study groups. Additional data analysis showed that the new index is specific but not sensitive in detecting adequate effort. In the mild cognitive impairment group, the index classified all of the patients as having put forth adequate effort. The sensitivity and specificity of the moderate and severe cognitive deficit groups are also described. Proposed cut off scores (including PPV ad NPV) using the 5 base rates as measured by the SLUMS are provided. Conclusion: The study provides clinical base-rates and cut-offs for the new index. It also shows that in some cases the new index misidentified a large group of subjects who exhibited intact effort, particularly among patients with severe cognitive dysfunction. Several limitations of the current study should be mentioned. The study does not include a control group of individuals who were claimants nor did it control for response bias.
