Promoting Educational Reform through Teaching about Hurricane Katrina

This paper deals with two types of educational reform related to teaching and learning the tradit... more This paper deals with two types of educational reform related to teaching and learning the traditional school subject of social studies. First, we consider the importance of teaching about controversial issues by examining the impact of Hurricane Katrina, the record-setting, natural disaster, which struck the Gulf Coast of the United States in late August 2005. Using this episode as their foundation, the authors demonstrate how the common practice of avoiding controversy within the social studies arena can be addressed. Since Katrina represents a topic for which no warrant exists within state standards for teaching the subject, it can be considered a true “teachable moment”. Second, we analyze a case study involving the use of technology to spark discussion relative to the issues of race and class tied to Katrina, primarily for the two-year period after the hurricane struck. While the use of digital technology has been slow to gain popularity in the field of social studies, the authors use the case study to demonstrate how it can be utilized to generate democratic dialogue and civic engagement.

Advances in the architecture of digital library service infrastructure enable the collection of v... more Advances in the architecture of digital library service infrastructure enable the collection of various types of data related to the use of library resources, tools, and services. The Big Data that is being generated provides valuable insight into library operations and has the potential to reshape the future of library work. In this paper, we describe the innovative application of topic modeling (supervised Latent Dirichlet Allocation) of research corpora accessed by patrons through a library proxy server. We found that the underlying topics of this corpus (e.g., psychology, family education, and methodology) converge with the general interests one would expect from a Graduate School of Education. In addition, we discuss the potential and challenges of utilizing library proxy log data in learning analytics research.

Multiple-answers multiple-choice (MAMC) items are widely used in educational testing and social r... more Multiple-answers multiple-choice (MAMC) items are widely used in educational testing and social research. However, inadequate studies and resources are allocated to the assessments of MAMC items. In this study, we introduce a new approach to analyze MAMC items using original response data (which alternatives have been selected) without scoring (correct or wrong). It has immense potential to provide rich information relevant for tractable psychological behavior and interpret-able educational measurement. We use the signal detection theory (SDT) to measure the decision-making behavior across alternatives. Then, the mixed membership model is applied to capture the grouped data structure in the MAMC item. A simulation study of the HMM-SDT model is presented with a comparison to the tradition treatments in Item Response Theory (IRT).

In this study we conducted behavioral analyses to gain insights into patterns of user interaction... more In this study we conducted behavioral analyses to gain insights into patterns of user interaction in a video discussion platform, Vialogues. Vialogues provides an asynchronous online discussion environment around video. Using a hierarchical clustering analysis on users' clickstream data, we identified four different behavior patterns: (1) video watchers with no discussion activity, (2) opinion seekers and active repliers with little to no video watching activity, (3) users who watched and discussed videos, and (4) users focused on viewing and/or creating metadata. Despite being the largest group, Cluster (3) had the least classifiable characteristics. Consequently we conducted additional analyses to examine finer-grained user segments. For each segment we created a transition network using weighted directed networks in order to understand the transition pattern between two consecutive click activities.

This chapter describes the community engagement plan carried out by the Gottesman Libraries at Te... more This chapter describes the community engagement plan carried out by the Gottesman Libraries at Teachers College, Columbia University to develop a design for "the learning theater," a flexible space aimed at the educators and students of the future. In order to design a learning space with the potential to inspire innovative use and cutting edge research, library staff conducted outreach and events to involve faculty, students, staff, and other stakeholders in generating use cases and ideas. These activities included immersive full day design events, shorter format design events, lectures, targeted collection development, and multimedia creation.

Clustering analysis in the context of education is important for determining the effectiveness of... more Clustering analysis in the context of education is important for determining the effectiveness of group activities especially when participants freely rotate between groups such as in a gallery exhibit or other informal learning space or setup. In this paper, we cover a method of applying Gaussian Mixture Models to two-dimensional data. We further describe the analysis procedure, and the success of implementing this analysis using simulated data and real data. Finally, we discuss some educational applications as well as future directions for this research.

In this paper, social network analysis and natural language processing with Latent Dirichlet Allo... more In this paper, social network analysis and natural language processing with Latent Dirichlet Allocation topic model approaches were utilized to gain insights into Pressible, to explore four developmental stages of a college-wide social network and their associations with blog content. The results showed that professors who developed courses became the most influential persons in the network. Students extended the online discussion topics beyond the scope of course topic set by professors.
