The Union of Mediterranean Trading Shipowners of Greece with the technical assistance of ICEPRONA... more The Union of Mediterranean Trading Shipowners of Greece with the technical assistance of ICEPRONAV of Romania have developed a generic ship type that can be constructed in such ways to serve the needs of a wide spectrum of transportation requirements, while ensuring significant economies for the builder in series. The need for this exercise has arisen in the context of ESYAN where clustering of various ship types around the six thousand tons mark had to be taken advantage of in a way to generate scale economies for both, the owners and the builders. While no serious technical innovation is involved, this type of application is novel and offers measurable savings in identifiable areas of the construction. If the matter of the replacement of the Greek Short Sea Fleet is seen as part of the overall strategy of Greece in the post cabotage era of the EU, a large number of such vessels are expected to be built. This paper describes the rationale behind this project and discusses the opportunities and challenges to promote it.

The positive outcome of this cooperation ia evidenced by the unprecedented growth of the commercial fleet which currently plays a significant role in the global supply of marine transport services.

Towards the strive of developing sustainable freight transport networks in Europe, the EU and the... more Towards the strive of developing sustainable freight transport networks in Europe, the EU and the developing South-Eastern Europe in particular, this paper initially examines the feasibility of establishing a navigable link along the Axios–Morava waterway, for freight transport between the Eastern Mediterranean Sea (via the Aegean) and the Danube River, and then proceeds with its energy and air quality comparison with the competing modes of rail and road. It was found that this waterway service is technically feasible and offers an energy and carbon efficient alternative to road-borne and rail-borne freight. However, the land-based services were found to be superior with regard to their impact upon the air quality of the region, mainly attributed to the stricter emission standards applicable to these transport modes. Finally, it is proposed to build on the ongoing international policy and funding interest in this project in order to implement all the necessary infrastructural and op...

The main drivers to revisit this subject today are associated with the availability of the necessary technical and management know-how, the international investment interest, as well as the demand for environmentally sustainable growth to which transport in general and inland navigation in particular will play a major role. It was demonstrated that the potential of the Axios-Morava navigable link between the eastern Mediterranean Sea (via the Aegean) and River Danube for the transport of freight offers an energy and carbon favourable alternative to road freight, whilst it competes closely with rail. However, the waterway service was found to be inferior to the land-based modes with regard to its impact upon the air quality of the region, mainly due to stricter emission standards currently applicable to i...
