2025 Tesla Model X - Overview

2021 - 2025 Tesla Model X14
2021 - 2025 Tesla Model X exterior
Tesla

The Tesla Model X first debuted in 2015 as Tesla's bold attempt to prove that an electric SUV could combine family practicality with supercar-level performance. With the 2025 update, Tesla refined the formula: improved aerodynamics, extended range and a Plaid trim delivering up to 1,020 horsepower. This refresh aims to keep the Model X competitive in a crowded luxury EV market, balancing everyday usability with dramatic design and headline-grabbing speed. Rivals such as the Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV and the Audi Q8 e-tron emphasize serene luxury and refined balance, but Tesla's goal is different: to maintain the Model X as the SUV that can haul a family, turn heads with falcon-wing doors, and still deliver acceleration that rivals sports cars.

New For 2025

There are no major changes to the Tesla Model X for this model year, but Tesla has made a few small refinements. The cabin is quieter thanks to improved insulation, while subtle ambient lighting adds a more polished feel inside. A new front bumper camera also improves forward visibility when parking or using driver-assistance features.

2025 Tesla Model X Price: Which One to Buy

For 2025 in the U.S., the Model X comes in a couple of key configurations. The Long-Range All-Wheel Drive version starts around $84,990 and the Plaid All-Wheel Drive performance version starts at about $99,990. These are the base MSRPs before any fees and taxes are included. On top of that, there is a destination charge that buyers need to account for as well, which is currently at $1,390. In terms of which trim makes the most sense to buy, most buyers find the Long-Range AWD version offers the best balance of value and everyday usability.

Interior And Features

The interior remains understated and spacious. In the Model X, design is focused on ease and comfort, creating a practical environment for passengers.

The cabin reads as a carefully choreographed interior. A low, uncluttered dash and a floating center console create clear sightlines, while a large touch display becomes the hub for navigation, media, and vehicle functions, complemented by a crisp digital driver cluster and steering-wheel shortcuts for essential info at a glance. HVAC outlets are slim and integrated into the horizontal architecture, so airflow is even without visual clutter, and ambient LED lighting, illuminated door sills, and subtle accent trim layer the space with depth and focus points that change mood. A panoramic roof floods the cabin with daylight and amplifies perceived volume, and acoustic glass and targeted sound-deadening keep road noise down.

Space

Built on a long 116.7-inch wheelbase, the cabin translates chassis length into genuinely usable fore-aft space and, in its standard layout, accommodates six people, with generous legroom of 41.2 inches at the front and 38.7 inches at the rear (5 or 7 seats) or 39.8 in six-seater setup. Front headroom measures about 41.7 inches and 41.0 inches in the rear, although you lost a tenth of an inch if you opt for six seats. The third row, which seats only two occupants, has a headroom of 37.2 inches and legroom measures either 29.8 inches of leg room or 32.3 inches, with the more roomy of the two thanks to six seats, rather than seven.

Cargo

The Model X approaches cargo as a distributed, practical system: the trunk is generous for a three-row SUV and, with the rear seats folded, yields a broad, flat load floor that handles larger items without awkward steps or ledges, while a useful frunk under the hood provides a secure, weather-protected spot for charging cables and smaller bags. Inside the cabin, everyday storage is well considered—a wide, multi-tier center console with a deep main bin, a shallow front tray, and integrated charging keeps phones and personal items stowed, deep door bins accept tall bottles and small bags without encroaching on foot space, the glovebox and a few lockable cubbies hide valuables, and thoughtfully placed cupholders serve front and rear passengers.

Materials And Colors

Jumping inside, you will quickly notice that the surfaces are straightforward and utilitarian: the cabin uses durable, leather-free upholstery with soft-touch plastics on the dash and door tops, felt-lined glovebox and shallow trays, and textured inserts in cupholders and door bins to reduce rattle. Trim choices are limited (warm walnut-style veneer or darker, performance-leaning panels with satin metal switchgear and headliner) and carpet tones run from black to cream, with a two-tone option on some specs. The center console, armrest and door panels share the same materials and finishes rather than bespoke treatments, and small details (lined bins, textured trays, contrast stitching on select schemes) are there to improve day-to-day durability. The Long Range spec tends to pair the warmer wood and softer finishes for a more composed feel; the Plaid shifts to darker trim, different stitching and sportier hardware to emphasize a performance character.

Features And Infotainment

The Model X has a minimalist interior centered on a 17-inch touchscreen that controls most vehicle functions; the rear passengers are also treated with a 9.4-inch touchscreen. The system runs on an AMD Ryzen processor and handles navigation, media, climate settings and vehicle controls. Built-in apps allow streaming from services such as Netflix, Spotify, and YouTube and the system supports Bluetooth, Wi-Fi connectivity, wireless phone charging and multiple USB-C ports. A rear display lets passengers control climate settings, watch streaming content, or play games. Audio comes through a 22-speaker premium sound system. Tesla continues to use its own interface, so Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not offered.

Performance

Looks won't please everyone, but Tesla goes all in on performance. The Model X delivers brutal, usable acceleration and a 0-60 mph time you'd expect from a Tesla.

Nothing has changed on the performance front. The Model X is offered with two electric powertrain setups, both sending power to all four wheels. The standard model uses a dual-motor layout with one motor at the front and another at the rear, producing about 670 horsepower. Power is delivered through a single-speed transmission, allowing the Model X to reach 60 mph in around 3.8 seconds and continue to a top speed of 155 mph. If you want something significantly more performance, the Tesla Model X Plaid switches to a tri-motor configuration with one motor at the front and two at the rear, raising output to roughly 1,020 horsepower. This setup delivers much more aggressive acceleration, dropping the 0-60 mph sprints to about 2.5 seconds. Even in standard form, the Model X is quick and stable thanks to its all-wheel-drive system and adaptive air suspension.

Fuel Efficiency

Efficiency varies slightly across the Model X lineup depending on the powertrain and wheel size. The standard dual-motor version is rated at 103/94/98 MPGe (city/highway/combined) and uses about 34 kWh per 100 miles, with an EPA-estimated range of 329 miles. Moving up to the Model X Plaid with 20-inch wheels drops efficiency slightly to 98/89/94 MPGe, consuming roughly 36 kWh per 100 miles and offering 314 miles of range. Choosing the Plaid with 22-inch wheels reduces efficiency further to 92/84/88 MPGe, with energy use rising to 38 kWh per 100 miles and range falling to about 294 miles.

Safety

The Model X hasn't been fully rated by the NHTSA or IIHS, but its close relative, the Tesla Model Y, earned a Top Safety Pick+ in 2023.

Even though the official ratings from the NHTSA and IIHS aren't available yet, drawing on Tesla's experience with the model Y, buyers can anticipate strong crash protection, a rigid structure and a low center of gravity that helps reduce rollover risk. Standard driver-assist technologies, including Autopilot, automatic emergency braking and lane keep aids, provide extra support on the road, giving occupants both active and passive safety measures.

Reliability

Reliability for the 2025 Tesla Model X benefits from the simplicity of its electric drivetrain, which eliminates many of the moving parts found in traditional combustion vehicles. However, the model has been the subject of a few recalls listed by the NHTSA. For the 2025 model year, three recalls have been recorded. One involves a potential rearview camera failure caused by a short circuit in a computer circuit board that could prevent the image from displaying when reversing. Another recall concerns an incorrect horn pad in the airbag assembly, which could stop the horn from functioning properly. A third recall relates to a safety system fault that results in an airbag that may tear during deployment.

Warranty coverage:

  • Basic vehicle warranty: 4 years/50,000 miles.
  • Battery and drive unit warranty: 8 years/ unlimited miles
  • Complimentary scheduled maintenance is not included

Recall information is accurate at the time of writing; however, recalls may occur in the years after production, in which case, it may not be reflected here. Current recalls are listed on the NHTSA website.

Design

The Model X sticks with the same smooth, aerodynamic look that has defined the SUV for years. Its shape is rounded and relatively clean with minimal creases and a low roofline that makes it look sleeker than most three-row crossovers. Up front, the design is simple. Slim LED headlights sit at the edges of the nose and, because it's an EV there's no traditional grille, just a smooth panel and a sculpted bumper with a small opening for airflow. From the side, the Model X is instantly recognizable thanks to its falcon wing rear doors, which lift upward in two sections instead of swinging out like conventional doors. They're designed to make it easier to access the second and third rows, especially in tight parking spaces. The long glasshouse and the panoramic windshield that stretches into the roof also give the SUV a very open look from the outside.

Wheel choices help separate the trims. The standard model rides on 20-inch wheels with a more aerodynamic design, while larger 22-inch wheels are available and are commonly paired with higher-performance Tesla Model X Plaid. Those bigger wheels have a darker, sportier appearance that gives the Plaid a slightly more aggressive stance. Tesla offers a small but distinct range of exterior colors, including pearl white multi coat, solid black, deep blue metallic, stealth grey, lunar silver and ultra red.

Verdict: Is The 2025 Tesla Model X A Good Car?

It all depends on what you're looking for: the Tesla Model X holds its own against the Mercedes EQE SUV and Audi Q8 e-tron with faster acceleration, longer range and a tech-focused cabin, while the German rivals lean on traditional luxury, making the choice a matter of whether you value innovation or classic refinement.

All information in this review of the 2025 Tesla Model X is correct at the time of writing; manufacturers may update, change, or improve any specification, pricing, or feature at any time.
