SPEECH PATHOLOGY

During the past ten years, ASHA has increased international outreach efforts to countries around the world as well as U.S. Territories. These outreach initiatives are part of ASHA’s new Strategic Pathway to Excellence. Special Interest Group 17 came out of ASHA’s international efforts and the increased interest of ASHA members in global research, clinical practice issues and other professional topics. Background

It is the position of the ASHA that audiologists and SLPs incorporate the principles of EBP in clinical decision making to provide high quality clinical care. The term EBP refers to an approach in which current, high-quality research evidence is integrated with practitioner expertise and client preferences and values into the process of making clinical decisions. De-Mystifying EBP True or False Evidence from systematic research is the only acceptable basis for clinical decision making. EBP requires clinicians to spend many hours each week scouring the hundreds of newly published articles and textbooks for evidence. Clinicians can or should be able to 'stay current" on every aspect of clinical practice. Studies with certain designs , especially RCT, always provide high quality evidence.

The importance of language training fbr young handicapped children is stressed, and the speech and language component of a mainstream program is described. Language is defined as the interrelation of cognitive perceptual organization, non-linguistic experiences, and linguistic experiences. Outlined are the various language programs used in the College Learning Laboratory Mainstream Language Program at the State University College at Buffalo, New York. Outlined are procedures for.identification of children for mainstreaming, assessment (with comments on specific tests), on-going assessment, and interiention which includes auditory skill development, verbal expression development, and conceptual and abstract thinking development.
