This talk is divided into four sections. §1 introduces Russell's claim that all we have in the mo... more This talk is divided into four sections. §1 introduces Russell's claim that all we have in the movements of mutually gravitating bodies is 'mere formula'. §2 counters this with the suggestion that there is a plausible interpretation of such formulae in which some variables are marked out as causes the others effects. §3 suggests provides a classification of the causal relationships described in these formulae in terms of causal theories, which are represented by structural equations and variables at a high type-level. §4 offers a first and more reasoned second pass at a potential probabilistic analysis of the causality implicit in scientific formulae.
