Gareth Dylan Smith

Gareth Dylan Smith is Assistant Professor of Music. His first love is to play drums with Stephen Wheel or Austina Lee. Gareth’s books include A Philosophy of Playing Drum Kit: Magical Nexus (2022) and I Drum, Therefore I Am: Being and Becoming a Drummer (2013). Gareth’s solo album, Permission Granted, was released in 2024 on Anthrophonic Records, soon to be followed by a monograph, Conversations at the Drums. Gareth is founding co-editor of the Journal of Popular Music Education and Intellect book series Contemporary Music Making and Learning. He edits the Percussive Arts Society’s Percussive Notes Online Research Edition. Gareth’s research interests include eudaimonia, punk pedagogy, popular music education, improvisation, and embodied experience in music making.
