A Compelling Intersectionality: Paleoethnobotany, Social Theory, and Feminist Commitments

In the context of paleoethnobotany, intersectionality raises the issue of how our own subsets of issues and perspectives intersect. Christine Hastorf and other researchers remind us that we do not just “apply” theory nor just “do” methods—there is a creative and interpenetrating relationship that can yield genuinely original insights. In particular, a feminist perspective should not just allow for, and positively enhance, the likelihood that our investigations will “complicate” our all-too-often essentialized grand narratives. Here I discuss what a more fully developed intersectional social/feminist paleoethnobotany can be from a recent generation of researchers who are looking over their field and its potentials. The overarching goals are to make a deeper and often more complex and nuanced sense of people and plants, a better sense of the on-the-ground human activities, and meaning-making that mobilize culture and precipitate the events to which archaeologists have some access. In the end, some might say that the presence of a seed (and its identification) in an archaeological context alone will “speak” to us, but when in dialogue with a revelatory theoretical framework, that seed will actually shout.

Another reminds us that, in history (as in archaeology) we have a great responsibility in remembering the past for the dead. And lastly, in keeping with the motivation for this entire volume, I remind our readers to consider deeply the contributions and ideas associated with both Indigenous and feminist archaeologies. I applaud this endeavor to take on more affective and open research practices.

The chapter considers what interpretation is about, how we define and identify it, and what various ways rock art researchers have engaged with interpretation. Here we mention how they have drawn on concepts of style, structuralism, or shamanism as well as on formal and/or informed methods. There is consideration of the uses of analogy and the direct historical method. Overall, the chapter is framed within the question of what constitutes an ‘authorized’ interpretation and how might we evaluate various interpretations for their validity and insights.

While some of us have long used fictional accounts of prehistory (e.g., Thomas 1987) in our courses, and eagerly read them to perhaps stimulate or prompt our own imaginations, these three novels are written by practicing archaeologists who each bring a unique and informed perspective to the stories they tell. Given the prevailing (usually unengaging and jargon-laden) discourse of professional archaeological writing, it is not surprising that few of us have developed as gifted storytellers, even about our own areas and topics of research. Many colleagues, furthermore, object to the very notion that what we are doing (or ought to be doing) as archaeologists is "telling a good story" (but see Pluciennik 1999; Terrell 1990). I, for one, admire those who can generate an anthropologically and archaeologically rich tale (e.g., Eco 1983; Russell 1996), because these remind me of how much we have to say about fundamental human issues, if only we could just "let go" from time to time.
