Thanks to my retirement from Best Buy in 2016 and the pandemic lockdowns of 2020, the regular rou... more Thanks to my retirement from Best Buy in 2016 and the pandemic lockdowns of 2020, the regular routines I had depended on for a sense of normalcy in my life disappeared. What began to appear were a series of behaviors which my partner, my former high school sweetheart and a special education teacher, suggested might be caused by undiagnosed autism. I reacted with anger, feeling insulted and humiliated. I was diagnosed with anxiety and depression in the early 1970s and have carried that diagnosis with me for five decades. Every psychiatrist reached the same conclusion and prescribed medication. After 50 years of being told I was an anxiety riddled depressive and taking everything from thorazine to trazodone, I was absolutely certain I was an anxiety riddled depressive. No doubt whatsoever. But after my anger faded, I begrudgingly, and secretly, began researching autism and taking on line tests, reading case histories and any scientific papers I could find, especially on Google Scholar. Long story short: she was right. Was she ever. No matter which tests I took, regardless from where they were from or who created them, the results were all the same: Asperger's Syndrome, now more commonly known as "high functioning autism". The Neanderthal “Hashtag” Engraving in Gorham’s Cave: A Possible Map of Gibraltar’s Upper Paleolithic Coastal Plain

More than 39,000 years ago, a Neanderthal incised an eight inch wide by seven inch high crosshatc... more More than 39,000 years ago, a Neanderthal incised an eight inch wide by seven inch high crosshatch design on a ten foot square, sixteen inch high bedrock platform more than three hundred feet from the mouth of Gorham's Cave, Gibraltar. Discovered in 2012, the etching, popularly known as the "hashtag", is composed of fourteen individual lines (See Special Note, page 10). The first eight lines were made using 179-312 strokes of a stone tool. The final six were each created using a single stroke. [Figures 1, 2] A microscopic analysis of the engraving has revealed the individual who carved the figure was right handed. This suggests they were sitting, crouching or kneeling near the platform, with their back to a hearth (made possible by a natural chimney at the rear of the cave), while facing the entrance to Gorham's Inner cave. This dead end chamber may have been used as a safe and secure 'bedroom' by Neanderthals. [Figures 3,4,5,6] To create the figure, the individual first carved two horizontal lines in the platform. The trident shaped one, designated line 1, was created using an estimated 30-68 strokes applied in a left to right (east to west) motion. The second horizontal line was made with 7-15 strokes in the same direction. [Figure 7] The roughly vertical lines, numbered 3-8, were carved using a top to bottom (south to north) motion. As few as 4 strokes may have been used to make lines 6 and 8, while lines 4 and 7 may have taken as many as 65-68 strokes. [Figure 8] Lines 9-14 were each made using a single stroke of the stone tool. Three lines (9, 10, 11) were added near the trident on Line 1, with line 9 crossing it, while lines 12 and 13 cross the upper part of line 3. The 14th and final line was etched inside line 1. [Figure 9]
