Digitality, both as a concept and as a constitutive element of contemporary culture, influences the ways and practices of working, as well as the methodological approaches and choices that define research in the humanities, social sciences and arts in general, and in history in particular. Especially regarding digital archives, the implications of digital technologies are massive. This article presents the 1821 Digital Archive of the Research Centre for the Humanities (RCH) and attempts to illustrate how one can imagine and design a thematic digital archive that is scientifically valid and technologically innovative. ln other words, how can one study, record and present aspects of a historical period through a variety of archival material and original research, with renewed themes of study and novel ways of narrating and representing the past within the digital realm.
