Munchen: Verlag Otto Sagner, 2007. 183 pp. euro16.00, paper.In 1984 the first edition of Oschlies's Lehrbuch, then with Vera Bojic as co-author, could claim the distinction of being the first textbook of Macedonian to appear outside Macedonia. (Horace Lunt's Grammar of the Macedonian Literary Language [1952], though in English, was published in Skopje.) Twenty-three years later, and half a century after Lunt, the choice is much wider-Rina Usikova's grammar, Victor Friedman's chapter in Corbett's and Comrie's The Slavonic Languages, and Zuzanna Topolinska's Zarys gramatyki jezyka macedonskiego being particularly valuable reference works. The Lehrbuch was extensively revised in 1986, and by 2007 further revisions were sorely needed, especially in the introduction and the illustrative material fortius third edition. The earlier editions included much current press material which was outdated by the new century. The lessons themselves, also partly revised, present a concise and lucid account of the workings of the language.The broad and discursive introduction-now much longer than in the previous editions-gives an account of the history of the Slavs and their languages in the Balkan region, setting Macedonia and Macedonian in their geopolitical and linguistic context, and offering some reflections on the new geopolitical and linguistic situation since the implosion of the Yugoslav state.In essentials, the book retains its original structure and design, with fifty lessons of varying length, each built round a grammatical topic. The order of material is always a source of difficulty for compilers of such works, and in this case it seems to be compounded by a degree of indecision as to the book's genre and audience. What appears to be essentially a descriptive grammar has features of a primer for self-teaching, or perhaps for classroom instruction, and some of the exercises are so placed as to present serious difficulty. The degree of difficulty will depend on the student's familiarity with related languages, but for the novice some early exercises will be discouraging. In Lesson 7, when the nouns and the forms of the definite article have just been introduced, the student is asked to identify the articles and demonstrative pronouns in a six-line joke, presented without a German translation. This much is, of course, possible, but the student who would like to understand the joke will require some knowledge of superlative adjectives, on which it relies, and naj- forms will not be found in the glossary. …

ABSTRACT This paper describes the process of translating and editing a collection of reports by R... more ABSTRACT This paper describes the process of translating and editing a collection of reports by Russian naval officers and other visitors to Australia during the period 1807–1912. By its nature the project is one of cultural mediation in reverse, involving some back-translation in the accepted sense of the term, while in a broader sense back-translating an Australia ‘made strange’ by a new perspective, to its target audience, which constitutes the original source culture. Invoking Shklovsky’s ostranenie, the paper outlines some of the general and specific matters to be negotiated in cultural transfer involving great geographical distances and a considerable distance in time, while considering how late twentieth-century thinking on ‘domestication’ and ‘foreignization’ applies to an exercise of this kind.

This contribution consists of an annotated excerpt from A. N. Tolstoi's ocherk 'Orfei v adu', in ... more This contribution consists of an annotated excerpt from A. N. Tolstoi's ocherk 'Orfei v adu', in English translation, preceded by a commentary, which outlines the Australian context and provides background on the captain of the MV Smol´ny, with whom Tolstoi sailed to Hamburg and London in 1935. Captain Zuzenko had made his name as a revolutionary in Queensland (1911-22) and twice been deported to Soviet Russia. Zuzenko's views on Australia and the Anglo-Saxon working classes are examined and compared with those in other sources on or by Zuzenko. These sources include his reports to the Executive of the Communist International (1920-23), Australian and British intelligence reports (1918-25), his press articles published in Australia, the USSR and the USA, and in particular a story by him found in the Poole-Fried Collection in the Fryer Library at the University of Queensland.

ABSTRACT The revolutionary sailor, journalist, and Comintern agent Aleksandr Zuzenko achieved ren... more ABSTRACT The revolutionary sailor, journalist, and Comintern agent Aleksandr Zuzenko achieved renown for his role in leading strikes and demonstrations in Australia, whence he was deported in 1919 and again in 1922. He became known to readers of Soviet literature in the 1920s and 1930s, but literary celebrations of his life came to an end with his execution in 1938 as a “British spy”. Thirty years later, after his rehabilitation, he experienced a posthumous revival not only in literature but also on television and radio, in feature programs made with the assistance of his surviving family and old shipmates. This article considers the scripts for a 1967 television feature, Chelovek iz legendy (A Man from a Legend) and a docudrama from 1971, Ballada o krasnom kapitane (Ballad of the Red Captain), as well as a radio program from 1968, Zhizn' i prikliucheniia krasnogo kapitana (The Life and Adventures of the Red Captain), in which he and his widow were lionized. It illustrates the ways by which the broadcasting media could serve to develop and maintain an essentially mythic image which supplanted the underlying reality, not only in the public mind but also in the private memory of the subject’s close relatives.

The Dictionary is the most ambitious record to date to record English equivalents for the vocabulary of modern Macedonian. It covers the vocabulary met with in a wide variety of settings and literary forms, from modern urban life to traditional folk poetry. Features include: * 50,000 headwords * clear, accurate examples of usage * all necessary grammatical information for Macedonian headwords * details of stress, where it departs from the regular pattern * a broad range of idiomatic expressions and proverbs. The work is based on the lexical corpus of the renowned Rechnik na makendonskiot jazik. Prepared by scholars at the Australian National University in Canberra, working in collaboration with the compilers of the original Rechnik, the content has been brought up to date by the addition of many newer words and new senses which have arisen for older words.
