Having an important role within the education systems, primary schools are the underlying institutions in which children may discover their own abilities, develop their socialization skills and affective characteristics, and learn information structures which motivate them to have rational and realistic views towards the world society. Within the scope of this study, the functions of education system and primary schools in Turkey were investigated through the aims stated in the Basic Law of National Education and the Regulation on Primary Education Institutions by the Ministry of National Education. The study indicated that the aims of education mainly focused on the functions of instruction and socialization in Turkey. Also the study revealed that popularizing the doctrines of republic in society and developing the sense of belonging towards the nation state structure constituted one of the foremost aims of Turkish education system. In addition, it was identified that the acquisition of cognitive skills and raising literate, scientifically thinking, creative individuals who can properly perceive the world are emphasized within the aims of education in Turkey.

Bu konuda hem düzeltici dönütlerin etkililiği üzerine devam eden bir tartışma, hem de yeni çalışmaların gerekliliği üzerine bir uzlaşma vardır. Bu tartışma ve uzlaşmadan esinlenen bu çalışma, doğrudan ve dolaylı olarak adlandırılan iki farklı yazılı düzeltici dönüt çeşidinin İngilizce'yi yabancı dil olarak öğrenmekte olan Türk öğrencilerin kısa ve uzun dönemdeki performanslarına etkilerini incelemektedir. Bu amaçla, 29 gün süren bir ön test -son test -gecikmeli son test çalışması tasarlanmış ve bir anadolu lisesinin 11. sınıflarında öğrenim görmekte olan orta düzey dil seviyesine sahip toplam 71 öğrenci rastgele iki deney ve bir kontrol grubuna ayrılmıştır. İngilizce ve Türkçe'deki farklı kullanımlarından dolayı durum filler hedef yapılar olarak seçilmiştir. Düzeltici dönütler çalışmasında hemen önce İngilizce'deki bazı durum fillerle ilgili bir ön test geliştirilmiş ve 3 denek grup öğrencilerine uygulanmıştır. Ön test uygulandıktan sonra, bütün denekler durum fillerle ilgili Hata Düzeltme ve Kontrollü Üretim etkinliklerine katılmışlardır. Etkinlikler tamamlandıktan sonra, bir deney grubundaki öğrencilere durum fillerle ilgili hataları üzerine yazılı doğrudan düzeltici dönüt, diğer deney grubundaki öğrencilere yazılı dolaylı düzeltici dönüt verilmiştir. Kontrol grubundaki öğrencilere ise hatalarıyla ilgili herhangi bir dönüt verilmemiştir. Dönüt verme uygulamalarının ardından iv bütün deneklere durum fillerle ilgili bir son test verilmiştir. Ayrıca yazılı düzeltici dönütlerin uzun süreli etkilerini görebilmek için aynı test 25 gün sonra tekrar uygulanmıştır. Testlerden elde edilen veriler, yazılı düzeltici dönütlerin etkililiğini görmek amacıyla tekyönlü ve iki-yönlü varyans analizi ile analiz edilmiştir. Bunun yanında, kısa ve uzun dönemde hangi yazılı düzeltici dönüt çeşidinin diğerine göre daha etkili olduğunu bulmak için LSD ve Dunnett t-testlerinden faydalanılmıştır. Verilerin istatistiksel çözümlemeleri, yazılı düzeltici dönüt alan deney grubu deneklerinin dönüt almayan kontrol grubuna göre hem kısa hem de uzun dönemde anlamlı derecede daha başarılı olduğu sonucunu ortaya çıkarmıştır. İki deney grubu deneklerinin performansları karşılaştırıldığında ise doğrudan dönüt alan denek grubunun, dolaylı dönüt alan diğer denek grubundan hem kısa hem de uzun dönemde anlamlı derecede daha başarılı olduğu görülmüştür. Sonuç olarak bu çalışma, İngilizce öğretmenlerinin sınıflarında öğrencilerin yapısal hatalarını düzeltmeyi ihmal etmemelerini ve Türk öğrencilerin kısa ve uzun dönemde daha iyi performans gösterebilmeleri için yazılı doğrudan düzeltici dönüt kullanmalarını önermektedir. The errors made by EFL learners are natural parts of EFL contexts since it is a demanding and difficult process. There is both a continueing debate on the effectiveness of corrective feedback on EFL learners' performance and an agreement on the need of further research on this issue. Inspired from this debate and agreement, this study investigates the effectiveness of two different types of written corrective feedback -namely direct and indirect feedback -on Turkish EFL learners' short and long term performance.

The flow theory with its components ‘anxiety’, ‘boredom’, ‘skills’ and ‘challenges’ can be associated with foreign language learning contexts. Although there are some attempts in several studies to examine the link between EFL context and the flow theory, no scale to measure the flow state in EFL context has been found in the related literature. The study presents the development and validation of the Flow State Scale in English as a Foreign Language Context (FSSEFL). A cross-sectional research design was used in the study. The scale was administered to a total of 438 students at Department of Foreign Languages at a state university in Turkey. Both exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted to the data collected from two separate participant groups in the study. The findings suggest that FSSEFL provides a valid and reliable instrument for the flow state in EFL context. The scale has three-factor structure with 10 items. The explained variance of the scale is 71.80% and alpha values are ranged from 0.78 to 0.82.

The present study examines both the changes in beginning teachers’ visions and the challenges they face during their first year experience in teaching. A basic qualitative research methodology was used, and the data were collected through semi-structured interviews and a questionnaire that included open-ended questions from eighteen beginning teachers who started teaching in public schools in Eskisehir, Turkey. A vision-oriented teacher education model provided the conceptual framework for identifying the changes in participants’ visions. The challenges were also emerged through inductive analysis of the data. The findings provide some evidence of considerable changes in beginning teachers’ visions and challenges in their first year teaching experience. They also present evidence for the significance of first year teaching experience in beginning teachers’ visions. The study also highlights the crucial role of learning through experience in the teaching profession. In the end, some further research trajectories on teacher education, particularly changes in visions and challenges are suggested.

This paper reports on both the process and findings of curriculum innovation towards a defensible EAP curriculum in Eskisehir Osmangazi University Foreign Languages Department. In addition, it illustrates the evaluation of the newly introduced innovations by the students. Brown’s (2009) framework was used for NA studies. Needs analysis studies were conducted in 2016-2017 academic year with the students and the teaching staff employed in the department. Focus group technique was used to take views and opinions of teaching staff about components of the curriculum and opinions of the students were taken through workshop technique. In 2016-2017 academic year, repeat students’ opinions regarding the curriculum in practice were taken through an open ended questionnaire. The data was analyzed by using content analysis technique. Emerging themes in the NA study are need for clarification of the program objectives, need for revision of teaching materials, need for improvement in teaching and learning practices, and need for improvement in assessment practices. Last, emerging themes in open ended questionnaire (evaluation of the NA study) are ‘materials’ and ‘assessment procedures’, and ‘overall structure of the EAP curriculum’.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the changes in three beginning teachers’ visions during their first year in the profession. A multiple case study was conducted for in-depth analysis of the changes in three beginning teachers' visions. Data were collected from three volunteer purposefully chosen  beginning teachers through individual interviews, classroom observations and open-ended questionnaires during a schooling year. Each participant was initially specified as separate cases and content analysis was used to analyse the data from each case. Then a cross-case analysis was conducted to compare the changes in each participant’s teacher visions. The results indicate that several changes appear in participants’ overall teacher visions, professional understanding, conceptual and practical tools, practices and dispositions throughout their first year teaching experience.

The characterisation of quality teachers differs in transformative teacher professionalism. It represents a more dynamic and proactive teaching profession. This paper reports on conceptualising teacher vision based on the related literature and recommends it as a possible framework for transformative teacher professionalism. Following the explanation of transformative teacher professionalism and teaching as a mature profession, characterisation and conceptualisation of teacher vision are addressed. Then an attempt to justify teacher vision as a possible framework for transformative teacher professionalism is done. The paper ends with a set of recommendations for the use of teacher vision in further research on teacher professionalism and teacher education.

Çocukların topluma uyumuna hizmet etmeye, yeni davranışlar benimsemelerine, sosyal ve duyuşsal becerilerini geliştirmeye yardımcı olan ilkokulların işlevleri, toplumun oluşturulmasında büyük öneme sahiptir. Bu çalışmada, 21. yüzyıl ilkokullarının amaç ve işlevlerinin sınıf öğretmenlerinin görüşlerine dayalı olarak betimlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Çalışma, uluslararası bir araştırma projesinin parçasıdır. İlkokulların işlevlerini betimlemeye yönelik araştırmada nitel araştırma deseni kullanılmıştır. Veriler Eskişehir ilindeki ilkokullarda farklı sınıf düzeylerinde görev yapan 20 gönüllü sınıf öğretmeninden yarı yapılandırılmış bireysel görüşmeler yoluyla elde edilmiştir. Katılımcıların amaçlı katılımcı yöntemlerinden ölçüte dayalı ve kolay ulaşılabilir durum yoluyla belirlenmiştir. Görüşmelerden elde edilen veriler içerik analizi kullanılarak çözümlenmiş ve bulgular araştırma sorularına dayalı olarak sunulmuştur. Bu araştırmanın amacı üç aday öğretmenin meslekteki ilk yıllarında öğretmen vizyonlarındaki değişimleri incelemektir. Üç aday öğretmenin vizyonlarındaki değişimlerin derinlemesine analizi için bir çoklu durum çalışması gerçekleştirilmiştir. Veriler amaçlı olarak seçilen gönüllü üç aday öğretmenden bir eğitim öğretim yılı boyunca bireysel görüşmeler, sınıf gözlemleri ve açık uçlu anketler yoluyla toplanmıştır. Her katılımcı öncelikle ayrı bir durum olarak belirlenmiş ve her birinden toplanan veriler içerik analizi kullanılarak çözümlenmiştir. Daha sonra her katılımcının öğretmen vizyonlarındaki değişimlerin karşılaştırılması için durumlar arası çözümleme gerçekleştirilmiştir. Araştırma sonucunda, katılımcıların ilk yıl mesleki deneyimleri sürecinde genel öğretmen vizyonlarında, mesleki anlayışlarında, kuramsal ve uygulamaya dönük araçlarında, öğretim uygulamalarında ve eğilimlerinde değişimlerin olduğu belirlenmiştir.

Teaching is a complex endeavor that requires deep knowledge of content, pedagogy, and students. Educational stakeholders design teacher competence frameworks to outline the knowledge, skills, and dispositions that teachers need to have to improve their teaching activity. These competence frameworks are guided by research and theory and tend to respond to local contexts and national efforts. In this article, we examine teacher competence frameworks in two national contexts, the United States of America and Türkiye, using Merriam’s (2009) approach to document analysis and Phillips and Schweisfurth’s (2014) framework for comparative inquiry. This analysis reveals much overlap but also distinct differences in educational structures. Our analysis is based upon four categories including overall structures, development, scope, and accountabilities of teacher competence frameworks.
