Rediscovery of Forficula iberica Steinmann, 1981 (Dermaptera: Forficulidae)

Forficula iberica Steinmann, 1981 was described from Spain (Province of Zaragoza), but since its ... more Forficula iberica Steinmann, 1981 was described from Spain (Province of Zaragoza), but since its description it has remained an unknown taxon, usually ignored or treated as a synonym of F. auricularia Linnaeus, 1758. Field work in central Spain allowed us to collect some specimens of Dermaptera that matched the original description of F. iberica. In addition, the collection of the Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales (MNCN-CSIC, Spain) held some specimens assignable to F. iberica confused among other Iberian species. The main objective of this work is to validate the specific status of F. iberica, report its rediscovery in central Spain, and evaluate the diagnostic characters provided by Steinmann (1981). The original description provided by Steinmann is quite complete, and fits precisely the specimens located in the field or at the MNCN, which cannot be associated to any other species of Forficulidae. The comparison of Steinmann´s paratypes of F. iberica at the Magyar Természettudományi Múzeum (MTM, Budapest), with the specimens obtained in the field, confirms that they can be assigned to F. iberica. The shape of the tegmina of F. iberica is most similar to that of F. lesnei, but differs from that of G. pubescens (obliquely truncated posteriorly). Shape of the cerci of F. iberica is similar to that of G. pubescens and G. brignolii, but different from that of F. lesnei. The genus Guanchia Burr, 1911 was created based on the shape of tegmina (obliquely truncated), but this character is quite variable. In agreement with Vigna Taglianti (2011), we consider that a phylogenetic study of the subfamily Forficulinae is necessary to revise the generic status of the continental species of Forficula included in Guanchia by Steinmann (1993).

De todas las especies arbóreas muestreadas, s u mayor abundancia h<t s ido detectada en los bosques de Quercus .wber del Parque Natural de la Sierra de Espadán, particularmente en la localidad mits antropizad<t y con actual manejo del corcho. En el resto de los espacios protegidos y especies arbóreas su presencia ha sido moderada. En el Parque Nat ural de la Sie rra de Espadá n P. cy/iudrus es tá activo durante un amplío rango de meses. con mayores abundancias entre agosto y septiembre. coincidiendo con lo observado en otra s poblaciones de cl imas cálidos. The genus Callistethus (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Rutelinae) in the Neotropics: new data and new species from Costa Rica

Synonymy of Callistethus kolbei (Ohaus, 1897) with Callistethus specularis (Bates, 1888) is proposed. A phylogenetic analysis based on the genes 16S, COI and 28S is carried out for Costa Rican species and diagnostic morphological features for the genus are tested on it for phylogenetic signal. An identification key for Callistethus species of Costa Rica is provided. The distribution patterns of Callistethus species in Costa Rica are discussed. Se propone una nueva sinonimia de Callistethus kolbei (Ohaus, 1897) con Callistethus specularis (Bates, 1888). Se realiza un análisis filogenético basado en los genes 16S, COI y 28S con especies de Costa Rica y sobre el árbol resultante se comprueba la señal filogenética de los caracteres morfológicos diagnósticos del género. Se proporciona una clave para las especies de Callistethus de Costa Rica. Se discuten los patrones de distribución del género en Costa Rica.

Physical and biotic factors driving the diversity of spider assemblages in tree hollows of Mediterranean<i>Quercus</i>forests

This study analyses the spatio‐temporal diversity of spiders in these microhabitats.Forty‐eight emergence traps were installed in tree cavities ofQuercus pyrenaicaforests in the Iberian Peninsula. Traps were collected monthly during a complete year.Generalised linear models and canonical correspondence analysis were used to evaluate the effect of two physical (hollow volume and height above ground) and three biotic variables (beetle richness and abundance and isopod abundance) on the spider diversity and composition of the entire assemblage and of the foraging guilds. Moreover, we examined the temporal segregation of the species using beta diversity metrics.Tree hollows hosted a rich spider assemblage (87 species) including 10 endemic and one vulnerable species. We registered four tree‐bark obligate and one hollow‐dependent species.Hollow height and beetle richness were the variables that better explained richness, while all variables analysed influenced spider abundances. However, contrary to the observed effect for other taxa (i.e. beetles), bigger cavities did not host more spider species.Temporal beta diversity throughout the year was very high and primarily explained by species turnover suggesting a temporal species segregation.We conclude that tree hollows constitute a key habitat for forest spiders and that special attention must be paid to the preservation of this microhabitat in forest ecosystems.

Three new species are described: Neobisium (N.) hispanicum Zaragoza & Hernández-Corral, n. sp., Rhacochelifer gaeli Zaragoza & Hernández-Corral, n. sp. and Rhacochelifer nonidezi Zaragoza & Hernández-Corral, n. sp. The genera Amblyolpium Simon, 1898 and Beierochelifer Mahnert, 1977 and the species Amblyolpium dollfusi Simon, 1898 and Beierochelifer peloponnesiacus (Beier, 1929) are new records for the Iberian Peninsula. Beierochelifer peloponnesiacus jonicus (Beier, 1932) is shown to be a junior subjective synonym of B. peloponnesiacus n. syn. New regional records of five other species belonging to the families Cheliferidae, Chernetidae and Withiidae are given. Keys are given for the species of the genera Pseudorhacochelifer Beier, 1976 and Rhacochelifer Beier, 1932 with elongated keels on posterolateral corners of carapace and anterior tergites in males, and for the Rhacochelifer species of the Iberian Peninsula. Complementary data to the description of the female syntypes from Caravaca (Murcia, mainland Spain) and males from the Canary Islands of Rhacochelifer pinicola (Nonídez, 1917) are given. Brief redescriptions of the female of Neobisium (N.) maroccanum Beier, 1930 and the male of Rhacochelifer euboicus Mahnert, 1977 are provided. The previous record of R. disjunctus from Slovakia is shown to be an error for R. euboicus. New data on the distribution and habitats of species of Cheliferidae, Chernetidae and Withiidae are given. Resumen Se ha estudiado la fauna de pseudoescorpiones en árboles maduros de Quercus pyrenaica Willd. del oeste ibérico mediante el uso trampas de emergencia de oquedad y trampas de ventana. Se describen tres nuevas especies: Neobisium (N.) hispanicum Zaragoza & Hernández-Corral, n. sp., Rhacochelifer gaeli Zaragoza & Hernández-Corral, n. sp. y Rhacochelifer nonidezi Zaragoza & Hernández-Corral, n. sp. Los géneros Amblyolpium Simon, 1898 y Beierochelifer Mahnert, 1977 y las especies Amblyolpium dollfusi Simon, 1898 y Beierochelifer peloponnesiacus (Beier, 1929) son nuevas citas para la Península Ibérica. Beierochelifer peloponnesiacus jonicus (Beier, 1932) representa ser un sinónimo subjetivo junior de B. peloponnesiacus n. syn. Se aportan nuevos registros regionales de otras cinco especies pertenecientes a las familias Cheliferidae, Chernetidae y Withiidae. Además, se incluye una clave para las especies de los géneros Pseudorhacochelifer Beier, 1976 y Rhacochelifer Beier, 1932 con quillas laterales en las esquinas posteriores del escudo prosómico y terguitos anteriores de los machos, y otra clave para las especies de Rhacochelifer de la Península Ibérica. Se ofrecen datos complementarios a la descripción de las hembras sintipo de Caravaca (Murcia, España continental) y de machos de las Islas Canarias de la especie Rhacochelifer pinicola (Nonídez, 1917). Se proporcionan breves redescripciones de la hembra de Neobisium (N.) maroccanum Beier, 1930 y del macho de Rhacochelifer euboicus Mahnert, 1977. La cita previa de R. disjunctus en Eslovaquia se trata de un error con R. euboicus. Se aportan nuevos datos sobre la distribución y habitats de especies de Cheliferidae, Chernetidae y Withiidae.

This work focuses on the study of woodlice diversity (Isopoda, Oniscidea) in two saproxylic micro... more This work focuses on the study of woodlice diversity (Isopoda, Oniscidea) in two saproxylic microhabitats: hollows of mature trees and downed deadwood, as well as the spatial and temporal distribution of recorded species. The study was carried out in three natural areas in the south of the province of Salamanca dominated by Quercus pyrenaica Willd. Emergence traps were placed in the saproxylic microhabitats, collecting monthly for a year. In total, 3692 individuals, identified in 5 species, were collected. Downed deadwood presented a higher species richness than tree hollows, while tree hollows recorded a greater abundance. Porcellio scaber was the most abundant species in all 3 areas and two microhabitats, although it showed a preference for tree hollows to hibernate. Las Sierras de Béjar y Francia was the natural area with the highest number of species. The temporal distribution of the 2 main species, P. scaber and P. ingenuus, did not show overlapping between the maximum activity of both species. The two species preferably occupied different microhabitats (P. scaber tree hollows and P. ingenuus downed deadwood) as a wintering shelter in autumn and winter, emerging in early spring in the case of P. ingenuus (April) and late spring and early summer in P. scaber (May-July).

Saproxylic Insects in Tree Hollows

Tree hollows are fascinating microcosms that host a rich saproxylic insect assemblage. One of the... more Tree hollows are fascinating microcosms that host a rich saproxylic insect assemblage. One of the most peculiar characteristics of this habitat is that both biotic and abiotic factors affect the evolution of the cavity making each unique and able to host a specialized fauna. Tree hollows are patchy habitats that provide a stable abiotic environment and long-lasting resources to a complex assembly of species from different trophic guilds (xylophagous, xylomycetophagous, saproxylophagous, saprophagous, predators, etc.), where species interactions seem to be an important piece of the puzzle of tree hollow diversity. Fourteen orders of insects and more than 800 species have been reported from tree hollows (primarily from Europe), with Coleoptera being the most diverse, followed by Diptera. However, knowledge of tree hollow insects and their requirements is still very asymmetric both geographically and taxonomically.

Despite being key to forest productivity, the understanding of how saproxylic organisms affect wood chemistry and organic matter stability during wood decomposition is still limited (see Refs. [47,50]. Among saproxylic insects, beetles make up the biggest part of saproxylic diversity and are primarily responsible for the mechanical breakdown of woody material [4], both directly, by tunnelling and feeding, and indirectly, through symbiotic relationships with fungi and other microorganisms that humify wood [45]. Many studies have shown increases in nutrient concentrations, especially nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), as wood decomposes [48]. A higher concentration of P and N than in surrounding soils was found in fresh earthworm casts [22], in freshly constructed termite mound materials [27], and in nests of wood ants [8]. Also, higher concentration of N and P than that of wood has been found in faeces of humivorous cetonid beetle larvae Pachnoda ephippiata [24,25], and in the faeces of the wood-feeding scarabaeid beetle larvae Osmoderma eremita [18] and Cetonia aurataeformis [31]. Moreover, numerous farmers from Africa, South America and Australia have long recognised the benefits of insects such as termites to crop production [48].

Volatile organic compounds emitted by Quercus pyrenaica Willd. and its relationship with saproxylic beetle assemblages

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by plants play a critical role in the structure of the ... more Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by plants play a critical role in the structure of the faunal communities that are associated with them. The aim of this work was to provide a detailed list of VOCs emitted by the oak species Quercus pyrenaica Willd. and to analyse the spatio-temporal variation in the emission rates of these compounds and in the diversity of saproxylic beetle assemblages associated with this tree species. VOCs sample collection was carried out by a dynamic flow-through enclosure technique with subsequent analysis by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. Statistical differences in the emission rates of VOCs and in the diversity of saproxylic beetles were found between seasons. Temperature and relative humidity seemed to be related to these variations. Spatially, neither qualitative nor quantitative statistical differences in the emission of VOCs were found. Nevertheless, the results demonstrated a trend such that larger trees emitted VOCs with higher intensity and hosted a greater diversity of saproxylic beetles. Our hypothesis that beetles responded to certain blends of VOCs emitted at different rates by potential host tress and not so much to the absence or presence of a particular compound was reinforced by the absence of qualitative differences in the VOCs emitted by trees of different sizes. These results open a new field of study, and it will be necessary to become more involved with the subject to evaluate the real influence of these VOCs released by trees in saproxylic beetle assemblages.

Los Anomalini (Coleoptera, Scarabaeidae: Rutelinae) son un grupo extraordinariamente diverso (cer... more Los Anomalini (Coleoptera, Scarabaeidae: Rutelinae) son un grupo extraordinariamente diverso (cerca de mil especies tan sólo en el género Anomala), de taxonomía complicada y todavía sin revisión en la mayor parte de las regiones geográficas. En la región Neotropical especialmente, la delimitación de los géneros ha sido históricamente compleja, y muchos géneros creados para grupos de especies presentes en la región han sido luego sinonimizados con géneros ya conocidos para la región Paleártica e Indomalasia. En la actualidad, la mayoría de las especies neotropicales están incluidas en los géneros Anomala y Callistethus, pero todavía existen muchas dudas sobre la correspondencia de estos géneros en el neotrópico y las otras regiones, así como sobre la monofilia de dichos géneros dentro del Neotrópico. Taxonomía, biodiversidad y biogeografía de los géneros Anomala y Callistethus (Coleoptera, Scarabaeidae, Rutelinae) en Costa Rica

El objeto de nuestras investigaciones ha sido profundizar en el conocimento de las riqueza de esp... more El objeto de nuestras investigaciones ha sido profundizar en el conocimento de las riqueza de especies de los géneros Anomala Samouelle y Callistethus Blanchard en Costa Rica. Ambos géneros tienen una amplia distribución mundial, siendo cosmopolita Anomala y oriental-neotropical Callistethus, y una elevada diversidad, con más de 1000 especies para el primero y alrededor de 150 para el segundo. Sin embargo, la diversidad real es probablemente mucho mayor, debido a la escasez de estudios, sobre todo para el área Neotropical. Durante el desarrollo del proyecto se han estudiado 87 especies de Anomala y 25 de Callistethus, de de las cuales son nuevas para la ciencia un total de 71 especies (58 de Anomala y 13 de Callistethus). Estos resultados han permitido incrementar el conocimiento de la diversidad de este grupo en Costa Rica en un 170% respecto a la conocida cuando se inició el proyecto hace tres años.
